You could tell them about the dream that I had and posted. In it I thought she wasmarring abu khaled, but something was just not quiet right and it wasn't abu Khaled. it was really abu......

then I woke up....

Guess my dreams just needed some fine tuning.

Most of the speeches I have heard at weddings are boring, childish,  and just plain dumb.  Let me explain why and I'll use the example of a wedding I attended recently.  Friends of the groom started going up there and relating stories and good times they had with the groom, and the groom enjoyed it and laughed as did the person relating the story, but for EVERYONE else in the audience they didn't understand it and they didn't benefit from it.  It may sound cute to talk about something like that, but please think of the poor people sitting in the audience.  Things like this can be told privately to the bride/groom and maybe some friends that may get a laugh out of it.

Now that I've explained what shouldn't be told during a wedding, let me explain what should be told.  Give the bride and groom some practical advice, advice that not just they could benefit from, but the whole audience could benefit from.   But keep it short and keep it to the point.  You can get it from some notes from sheikh M or from some notes of his class, or even from something beneficial you learned or studied or something beneficial you learned in life.  I always like to start off speeches with a bit of humor to break the ice and make me feel comfortable.  You know something like this, "hey everybody, shaz is going from one cow town to the next, we all knew she couldn't stay away from them", (get it?  cow town albany?  cow town texas?  hahahahahah.)  Make duaa for them, insha'Allah.

NO offense brother Arshad but I kinda like hearing those personal stories..even if I wasnt in the 'know' per se. There's something about weddings that get me all misty eyed and what not....and and I suppose those type of speeches just add a little extra kick the the misting ;-)

But seriously, keep it short, simple, touching, funny and wise. Say something from the heart....I say combine some wise words from a sheikh like the brother mentioned but like twist it so it incorporates some instance in Shazia's life that has happened , hopefully will happen etc...try and be 'witty'  ;)

Good luck to ya.
peace

Hey Razia it was funny to see Arsalan's shoes being waved from the podium, wonder how much you guys made  ?

Even 10 bucks /person would have amounted to a small fortune :)

Here ya go ;)

``````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
Shazia might kill me after tonite, but itd be all worth it! About 4 years ago, one day, shazia and I were at troy masjid. Everyone had left the masjid except for a few sisters. As shazia and I had never seen the brothers section of the masjid, and it was now empty, our fascination and curiosity was rising inside. So we decided, lets go to the brothers side and explore. (now lemme remind you, we were not young little girls, we were about 17 yrs old, but that never stopped us) we were pretty much running around the brothers section of the masjid, when shazia just happens to find the mic, the mic that’s usually used for halaqahs and salah prayer. Little miss shazia goes and starts playing with it.  “testing 1 2 testing, this is shazia on cnn live” it was pretty amusing until suddenly, can u guess who comes and shows up?  BROTHER MOKHTAR !!!  and bro mo goes " WAT ARE YOU DOING? why are u playing with the mic"  me and shaz have these confused looks on our faces and quickly run away . the other sisters are laughing hysterically at us. and thats the type of relationship me and shazia have: we get together, get a lil excited and crazy, get caught and run away quickly.
Last year shazia got engaged to brother arsalan, from texas. We didn’t know much about him, except that he was from texas. Shazia didn’t have a picture of him, so she carried this around (SHOW WOODY DOLL, pull string to make it talk) no im just kidding, but the girls did usually tease her cuz she was marrying a Texan (cough cough cowboy)!
When shazia had asked me to speak at her wedding, I was excited becuz that’s a symbol of how close we were, but at the same time, a bit nervous. How was I gonna summarize about 12 years friendship in 5 min. and I do have to tell u, writing this speech was soo sooo difficult for me. And only today did I realize why its so difficult. My best friend of 12 years is moving away. And I was in denial. I was gonna miss her. So I just didn’t think abt it. I had asked a few of shazia’s friends some silly questions:
1. if shazia were a fruit wat fruit wud she be : some said a pine apple or watermelon- shes all tough and protective on the outside, but all soft and mushy on the inside
2. if shazia were a shoe wat shoe wud she be:   a  comfy sandal, nice shib shibs, or a combat boot made from the softest leather in the world
3. when asked what 3 words describe her: ppl said : dedicated, faithful, genuine, friendly, funny, Pious, intelligent, compassionate
4. but when asked, what season does shazia most remind you of, EVERYONE  said spring: the season where the weather gets warmer, the sun shines stronger, fresh tulips bloom, and theres a sort of lightness in the air.
Shazia and I have have been through so much together, from catching fireflies at iccd weekend school to high school drama, and msa in college, shes the type of person that notices ur strengths and interests and encourages u to take them further. Shes someone you can laugh with, have fun with, tells you when ur being dumb, but mostly, shazia is someone who truly reminds me of Allah swt. And in my heart, that’s the best type of friend a person can have. Were not just best friends, we’re sisters of the soul. And I love her for that.
Allah swt has truly blessed the Houston community, because theyre getting a precious jewel like shazia, and the Albany community will sincerely miss you shaz. Shazia, I love you with all my heart fisabilillah, and both of you will always be in my duas. I pray that you two will always be partners not only in marriage but in the deen, as 2 ppl who remind each other of Allah swt, and grow together serving Him, because that is wat makes the love in a relationship the strongest.
BTW, we found a pair of shoes (WAVE ARSALANS SHOES AROUND IN AIR!!) the owner of these shoes shud see Jannah. these shoes seem to be expensive $$$ :D
````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````

poor guy, he had to walk around his whole wedding barefoot, he shuda paid up earlier:) u guys shud have seen the look on his face when he came out from maghrib and cudnt find his shoes, it was like " oh no, i shuda known better" hehehe :D   but he might kill me after that speech, oh well, everyone else seemed to enjoy it

~razia

ps: what did the texas brothers actually say :) i gotta hear this

hahaha the great thing is we have this picture of him smacking his forehead with a "oh no!" expression when he came out and realized he couldn't find his shoes.. thats one of my favorites ;)

ahhh its all revenge for taking our shazi away from us :(

and u shoulda seen his face when he came over and i gave him some "sprite" heavily salted ;)

the bros from texas said "u didn't give us a chance for rebuttal after all the texas jokes"... and yesterday abu_hamza was like pointing out his friends in pictures.. he said this friend is going to kill you at the walima.. and this is killer #2, this is killer #3... wait till u hear his jokes about NY... etc  HAH we'll see ;)

I really enjoyed the humerous speech, didn't think I would because I thought they would be all personal you had to be there stories.

The best part of the speech, which gave all indication of what kinda sis se7en is was the CNN mic part.... I am still tee heeing over it! My kinda gal!

That was a great speech, mashallah.  I'm impressed, it had a little bit of this and a little bit of that and gave an indication of who Shazia is, though I'm suprised there was no bebsi jokes.  :P

as salaamu alaykum,

awwww it was such an awesome speech, but I can't believe you wrote it the DAY before the wedding  :o

Kathy, are you familiar with the desi tradition of stealing the groom's shoes?  basically the brides friends steal his shoes and don't return them to him unless he shows them his kindne$$.  :P
