Gmail subscription is only through invitations. I have been sitting on 3 gmail invites for quite some time now and want to get rid of them. Drop me an instant message if you are interested in getting one.

should we really be using gmail? aren't there alot of privacy issues...when they clearly say they are openly reading and scanning our emails and using it to do targeted advertising.. sounds pretty exploitive... although i do have one now thanks to MIT ;) i say we should use it for pictures or as a file depot or something?

Why dont we all take pictures of our respected masajids, and send it to Jannah's gmail whatsit, and then she could start a webpage with photos of the world masjids :).

I've got some photos of my masjid during I'tikaf last ramadan :P

No takers? I just found out that google has increased the invites to 6. Guess I have to take them to craigslist then.

Well, I've been using hotmail and yahoo for a while now, and google can't be worse. Besides, I really don't care if someone reads my email, my correspondence is benign and boring, mostly. Its just a process scanning your email btw, nothing sinister here, yahoo and hotmail do it too, without telling you.

In case you are not aware, your email provider CAN and does read your mail, and this practice recently had a court ruling in its favor (newyork times). If you REALLY need privacy, PGP is the way to go.

The masjid pic idea seems to be nice

I have a couple of pics taken during my recent travels (portland -Maine, providence -RI, , Tulsa -Ok, Dallas -TX) missed out on taking pictures in Boston Dearborne and  Chicago though, guess another excuse to go back :P

It's just the principle that we are willingly letting gmail exploit us for advertising. That ISP's and yahoo etc, the gov't do it undercover i think is a seperate issue. Shouldn't we stand up and say u know this ain't right or this is a privacy issue, cause if we don't it will continuously get worse.

I think most poor muslims say "i don't got nothin to hide" when the fbi comes over to interview them as well, but again they use this to exploit certain people, sometimes even other people in the community. We should learn to know our rights and stand together against people who exploit our communities (even our internet community).

Muslim/Siddiqui - cool idea... why don't u guys start a thread and use the attach feature to post your pics...

Those who have requested an invite please provide a working email address where I can send the invitation, they are meant to be sent out to email addresses. It doesn't have to be your own email address, I just need an address that works.

There has been a lot of discussion on this on many nerd forums, check slashdot for instance. There are antagonists as well as protagonists of gmail's model, but no resolution is in sight. My perspective is that google has been honest in making its intentions clear. They also have a very attractive offer, 1 gig of email, fastest search available, and a GUI which is still unrivaled. You have a choice, you are making an informed decision. The associated privacy issues are well-known, so just use the service keeping that in mind. Besides, nothing comes for free. Btw, the ads are non-intrusive, unless you are hunting for ads, you won't even notice them.
