[slm] i thought i'd share some good news with my madina family .... so, yesterday (july 20th) at approximately 4:00 pm, i finished my PhD oral exam and passed. I was panicking in the last 2 weeks and was totally freaking out, but alhamdolellah, Allah was most merciful on me. alhamdolellah, 6 years of torture finally came to a happy end. as you might imagine, it has not totally sunk in, and i can't quite grasp the fact that i no longer have to do bench work, for that project. i don't know what is next, but a mental vacation is something i am looking forward to. please remember me in your duas, as my personal life is very foggy at the moment. take care wassalam Mona |

[slm] M A B R O O K they say PhD means "phira hua dimagh" (an 180 degree turned brain) but it is worth it. Pak government pays Rs 5000 extra to PhD's btw what is your PhD in? |

[slm] jazakum Allah khair, for your kind words and wishes. :-* so, i am a biochemist, although i sure hope you don't take that against me. :) much of my studies involved using nuclear magnetic resonance (those of you who took organic chemistry should know what i am talking about) to obtain a physical characterization of a protein that is critical for normal heart and muscle function. The protein has a cool acronym: SERCA. It is also known as the calcium pump. i'd love to tell you more if you want to know more about it. take care wassalam Mona |

[slm] wow, a bio-chemist 8), and one who has worked on NMR, although I guess by now NMR would be pretty routine matter in biochemical research. Is it? So, yes, if it isn't too much bother, tell us about your work. What does SERCA stand for? What technique did you use to extract the "calcium pump", gas-chromatography? and what in simple words is NMR, how is it measured? I mean how can one measure a property of such a small thing as the nucleus of an atom. finally, does the physical characterisation of this protein require such a fancy thing as a NMR analyser, or whatever it is called? |
