Headscarf no barrier to beauty contest

18-year-old Andina does not see her headscarf as a barrier
A woman wearing a traditional Muslim headscarf is competing to become the next Miss Indonesia.
Despite her hair being covered, 18-year-old Andina told the state Antara news agency that she would prove she could still win the contest.

Although Indonesia is the world's most populous Muslim nation, the vast majority of women do not cover their heads - including the other 29 Miss Indonesia contestants.

But Andina is from the province of Aceh, where Muslims often practice a more conservative version of Islam.

According to the French news agency AFP, the judges have said they will assess Andina differently from the other finalists - looking at how she arranges her headscarf rather than looking at her hair.

According to Putri Kuswisnuwardhani, the chairwoman of the Miss Indonesia Foundation, brains, beauty and behaviour will all be assessed in deciding who will become the next Miss Indonesia.

Wa'alaikumussalam warahmatullah,

There was a similar pageant organised by a Malaysian women's magazine, and a hijabi participated in it a year or 2 ago.

Personally - these are signs that the hijab has lost its meaning.  :(

We read many poems, proses, articles about how those with hijab are different from those enslaved by fashion trends, male expectations, and the pressure to live a life concerned with what the creations deem beautiful.

When hijabis enter beauty pageants or the like - what does it tell?

What happened to the deeper meaning of beauty - where we do NOT have to be judged by a panel of imperfect people, trying to judge beauty - or the lack thereof?

In the Qur'an, mankind are either referred to bashr or insan. Bashr refers to the physical aspect of mankind, whereas insan refers to the more elevated and exalted aspect of mankind - his/her ruh (spirit) and qalb, that will be the things judged by the Most Beautiful.

In a tafsir of Surah Al-Hijr:33, Shaitan refused to bow down to Nabi Adam (a.s), becoz he judged Nabi Adam only by his bashr - not by his insanniyah. That's why he thinks a smokeless fire is better than clay.

It seems to me... the criterion for judgement of beauty pageants take the same spirit. :(

May Allah protect us.

Allahua'lam

I totally agree with sis Barr, it takes out the whole meaning of:  "Don't judge me by how I look, but judge me by my character"
Also, isn't the whole point of hijab *covering* your beauty?  ::)
sigh, i really don't know how it would work.

Although, it would be interesting to see how she wears her scarf for the beauty contest. :-)

This is one I the issues I plan to write about for an essay on hijab. Many do not understand what the focal point of wearing hijab is . Hijab is a covering not just for your head but also for your body, it's a way of behaving. It's a shame to see sisters who cover their head but wear tight clothes, with loads of makeup, talk loudly, etc their missing the entire point.

it won't be a story, it will be a disaster because of the confusion it wil create, that you should cover your head, but can bare your body.

I don't think Andina is genuine.

"When hijabis enter beauty pageants or the like - what does it tell?"- Barr

i wonder about that too sister...  i hope she does not win...  this is a new phase of hijab and the story it will tell may not be good for the other hijabis...

i work in the mall, i see Hijabi women with 3/4 skirts, capris (3/4 pants), tight clothing, loads of make up, front is not covered.... so on... then i look at sisters who do not wear hijab but wear modest loose clothing.  i feel more respect for them than those hijabis.... seriously many hijabis are changing the true essence of hijab, and for that non-muslims are loosing respect for us... thats how i feel.... forgive me if i sound ignorant...

Inshaallah, Allah [swt] will guide us The True Way, the Way of the Light.... Ameen

I think Islamic education is missing here.

I mean, hijab and 3/4 skirts, let alone a beauty pageant.

What these women need to know is that hijab is not a fashion, and does not mean covering your hair only.

so education, and dawah

good luck to you :)
