Breastfeeding Ques?

I started breastfeeding and the nurse handed me the nipple shield without even trying to
help the baby latch on to me. After two weeks I realized that I am not suppose to use the
nipple shield permanently and that it is alot harder for the baby to get milk from it.
Now it is really hard for him to latch on straight to my nipple because he is so used to
the sheild. Has anyone had any experience with this and has anyone else been successful in
getting rid of the nipple sheild and getting the baby to latch on directly?

A Nipple sheild is generally used for women with inverted nipples.

Many nipples 'pop out' once the full milk comes in. If yours have 'popped' there is a good chance you don't need the sheild.

In your area there are La Lache groups, women who support breast feeding. Check for a phone number with the maternity hospital. They are a great bunch of women!

Just wanted to let you know it can be done! While not having experience myself, or even ever having seen a nipple shield I want to tell you about my sister.

She had some breastfeeding problems with her baby. The baby was losing weight and the doctors told her it was a supply issue and she should give the baby formula. It broke her heart but she gave her formula and the baby still didn't gain weight. It turned out that my niece had painful reflux and was therefore not eating enough. Once it was treated she was fine. But my sis had the problem of retraining the baby to latch on because she was used to drinking from a bottle. She persevered and it was extremely difficult but Alhamdulillah my niece is 25 months old now and still breastfeeding!!

So hang on in there. Definitely seek out the la leche group. My sister goes to that too. And if you can't/don't want to, there are newsgroups online - for example in Google go to misc.kids/breastfeeding and you can get support and advice there. It's not muslim, but hey, they are all breastfeeders and ready and willing to advise.

Hope this helps, insha Allah,

wasalaam

I CANNOT believe a nurse would do something like that in this day and age, knowing how important breastfeeding is for the infant (and mom).  I had a really bad experience with a male resisdent physician when I was trying to teach my son how to breast feed.  He actually told me that breastfeeding wasn't for everyone in response to the fact that my son's blood sugar had dropped back down after he was born with low blood sugar. I really wish these people would educate themselves on the subject if they're going to be working on neonatal wards.

Anyway. . . ::)
Just like the sisters said, contact la leche, or hire a lactation nurse.
BRO's beware:

There are things they/you  can do while your baby learns to latch on and still get enough nutrition via formula.  In my case they took a little tube and hooked on to the end of a syringe filled with formula. They then taped the end of the tube onto my nipple and as my son sucked I slowly injected the formula.  He was getting a little of both and was still learning to suckle.  In the meantime I pumped like crazy to keep up my supply, and froze the extra for times in the future.

Again, contact LaLeche, the really know what they're doing and you'll probably need the help and support.  Also remember, even in normal situations nursing is an aquired skill that takes a lot of work.  It's really not the sort of easy, natural process as people might think.
