Is wearing a bathing suit in front of other women halal? I went swimming before and saw some sisters wearing them, it felt kind of strange but I wasn't sure if they were right or wrong.

From the navel to the knee must be covered in front of other women.  Even in front of women, sisters need to display a certain amount of modesty. Personally, I wouldn't feel comfortable wearing something so tight in front of others.

I know I read of some 'halal' bathing suits....perhaps on here?   ???

Mashallah the gut feeling is usually right. Shukran for confirming it. I wonder what a halal bathing suit looks like. :-* I just wear pants and a tee-shirt in front of other gals.

I don't like those either. I mean, if you were ever to go public swimming wearing one of those...wouldn't it stick to your skin beacuse of the water?:o And what if the cap comes off?!!

I think the fact that they're made of lycra would prevent them from sticking any *further* to the body  ???  I mean sure lycra is designed to be fitted, but what else could you possibly wear?

Also, swimming caps are made to stick to your head no matter what  ;)

at least those let water through and resemble swim wear, the turkish ones they have on jelbab.com are water resistant. ::)
I got a dive skin a while back and a knee length terry cloth swim cover  with a hood to wear over it but I havent actually tried it out yet. I get the sinking suspicion the old folks down at my gramps's community will raise a stink if I even try it. when I was looking around I saw some christian sites with knee length outfits with a jumper thing over them they said they could modify on their site but i didnt feel like going through all of that and haveing to go across religions to do it.

As-salaam aleikum,

#1 Why wear an "islamic" bathing suit if you're in the privacy of your own home with no one around?

#2 Why wear an "islamic" bathing suit in public?! :P

Personally I think long shorts and a tank top would be just fine in front of Muslimah friends.

That's for men.. women are required to cover from the top of the bosom to the knee.

doesn't seem right. I don't have the stamina to search, but what sis Umm Junayd says seems right.

Question :

What are the things that a Muslim woman may uncover in front of a kaafir woman, such as a Buddhist woman for example? Is it true that she is not allowed to uncover her face?

Answer :

Praise be to Allaah.

The correct view is that a woman may uncover what is above the navel and what is below the knees in front of another woman, whether she is a Muslim or a kaafir. As for the area between the navel and the knees, this is ‘awrah and is to be covered in front of everyone. No woman should see this area of another woman, whether she is Muslim or non-Muslim, related to her or not related; the same applies to the ‘awrah among men (i.e., no man should see the ‘awrah of another man). A woman may see the chest, head, shins, etc., of another woman; similarly a man may see the chest, shins, and head of another man. With regard to the view of some scholars, that a believing woman should not uncover in front of a kaafir woman, this view is superceded by the more correct of the two scholarly views, because at the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), Jewish women and also idol-worshipping women used to enter upon the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) for various reasons; it is not narrated that they used to wear hijaab in front of them, and they are the best and most pious of women.

Don't laugh ok....but this is so comfortable, Spandex jumpsuit with the necks to down below the knees and T-shirt over it with bathing cap.  If a woman is naked in front of me and I mean bare from above navel, yeah....freaks me out.  COVER PLEASE!!!  Or I run for cover.

I have a horrible case of STARE-initis if anyone is uncovered at the top.  It's like I  have to look to figure out why show all that...you think you really look good without a top?  In many cases....not a pretty sight, built or not.  But no worries....me not stare for loooong time...it's just...WHY?

Allah (SWT) guide us all, ameen.

In many circumstances, many would be uncomfortable looking @ the topless or be the topless, or even part of it.

However, in circumstances such as breastfeeding, in many Muslim cultures, women would breastfeed in front of other women modestly and it is not a big issue - prolly becoz, its not part of the awrah, prolly its just part of the culture.

On another note - I find that sisters brought up in the west are extremely shy about breastfeeding in front of other sisters, though.

Allahua'lam :)

well, last week I went swimming twice and this is how I did it.
the first time I went in the morning on off season to a fairly non crowded beach. I wore an amera hijab, and a loose track suit with a wrap skirt over the pants and coming to the knees, I found places in the water where I could float around by myself, though I didnt have the benifit of other swimmers to chase off the sting rays, though they are pretty laid back if you dont mess with them.
the second time I went to the pool at my grandparents park, it was mostly old women and a few old men, but I didnt mingle with the men, but here is the thing, the old ladies, friends of granny, and granny all got togeather to make me feel extreemly unwelcome, my granny even kept putting her feet and butt in my face,
but being covered like I was, they couldnt do the terrible things they normally do (you wouldnt beleive).
any way, after the way they behaved after all the trouble I went to to stay sunnah covered and yet look a little like I was there to swim, next time Im swimming in abaya and they can kiss my feet and butt.

That's sweet al-ajnabia.  Sting rays....this is why I fear the water.  OHHhhhh.....could you imagine if...all those critters in the sea in your shirts because we wear loose clothing....ohhhh...and fishes....they nibble like paraunas...and eels what if eels...they electricute, you know....and sea worms....and...and.....ohhhhh my.

I have a fear of sea creatures so I only swim in pools where I can see my legs.  I haven't swam in like 15 years.  It's not like riding a bike.  I can swim, but I can't dog paddle nor can I free style.  I can float and swim but can't seem to get my head above the water to breathe cuz when I do, I swallow water and that just makes me sick to the stomach cuz now I've swallowed a huge chunk of dead bacteria floating in chlorinated water.....ohhhhhh...YUCK.  Now I remember I don't swim anymore.

Many du'as and Allah (SWT) bless...

Sis Barr, I have to be honest, it freaks me out when women "openly" breastfeed in front of me :o  And I mean, of course, it is not part of Awrah or anything, but I just can't seem to get used to it!

I remember once sitting with a group of women I had only met just hours before for the first time, and I was playing one of the little boys...when his mom called him, wipped out her breast, and started feeding him right there!!! I was  :o , wallahi, I could not concentrate!

Maybe I just need some more shock treatment?  ;)  (And this is coming from a Muslima who has been through several rotations through Gynaecology and Obstetrics, and *examined* thousands of breasts in my short career!)

My friend breastfeeds when I am there, but she does it in such a way that I don't see *anything*, which is so much better in my opinion.  Besides, it's such a wonderful bonding session between mom and baby, if it can be helped, I don't think I would breastfeed in front of anyone?  Oh well, thats just me.  And yes, I grew up in the West (technically the south), so maybe that's why I am the way I am.   ::)

Ok, this is totally off topic, so I will go
Salam
