[slm] I'm not even going to rephrase it, this is from a good friend: so i have a question about sadaqa... can you give borrowed money away as sadaqa?? like i dont really have money of my own.. its all from student loans.. (which i pay interest on) which makes like my whole career kindof haraam, huh? JazakAllah Khair. Wasalaam. |

[slm] Sister, Sadaqah, as far as i know, does not have to only be in monetary form. Removing something harmful from the road is a form of Sadaqah. Charity / volunteering your time to a worthy cause etc. are also forms of Sadaqah. Sadaqah is in the reach of every Muslim regardless of their financial status, Insha Allah. |

[wlm] It doesn't have to be money. Giving food to the poor and donating clothes to the needy is also sadaqah. Even smiling and saying a kind word is Sadaqah :) |

[/quote] Although the act of paying interest on money is incontrovertibly haram, the money itself and the subsequent accruing benefits might not be. Check with a trusted scholar, I have seen a couple of fatwas on the web supporting what I just wrote. Btw, logically, wouldn't it be better to pay off your interest bearing loan than to give sadaqah? Sounds like a simple choice to make. |
