Seminar: A Guide To The British Media

Saturday 25th September 2004

At a time when British Muslims are facing unprecedented media pressure, the Muslim Council of Britain's Media Committee is organising a special one-day seminar on 'A Guide To The British Media' at the gleaming new London Muslim Centre in Whitechapel, London, on Saturday 25th September 2004.

The seminar's aim is to develop the skills needed by British Muslims to ensure a better and more accurate representation of their faith and values in the print and broadcast media.

This one day seminar will, insha' Allah, prove beneficial for all British Muslims who want to know more about how the UK media operates and want to combat the Islamophobia that runs rampant through too much of the British media.

Attendees will be given the opportunity to question a panel of senior journalists from The Times, The Guardian, the Independent on Sunday and the Ilford Recorder to gain a deeper understanding of how our national and local newspapers work. There will be separate sessions with representatives of the Press Complaints Commission and OFCOM to find out about how complaints procedures work with respect to our newspapers and broadcasters. In the age of the Internet, we will have the editor of BBC News Interactive on hand to give an overview of BBC News Online - the world's most popular news website.

Professor Greg Philo, co-author of the acclaimed book 'Bad News From Israel' will deliver a presentation - with accompanying video footage - of how our TV News broadcasters have failed to cover the Israeli-Palestinian conflict fairly and have tended to support official 'Israeli perspectives' about the long-running Middle East tragedy.

There will also be the opportunity to discuss the coverage of Islam with a panel of editors of various UK Muslim publications.

If you would like to attend this seminar then please click here and download and complete the registration form and send it with a cheque payment for £50 to The Muslim Council of Britain, Boardman House, 64 Broadway, Stratford, London E15 1NT

Cheques should be made payable to: The Muslim Council of Britain.
Note 1: The £50 fee is inclusive of lunch and refreshment costs.

Note 2: Crèche facilities will also be available for an additional charge of £15 per child (inclusive of lunch and refreshments).

Note 3: Places for this seminar will be allocated on a first-come first-serve basis and the deadline for received applications is 17th September 2004.

Note 4: If you have any queries then please call 07956353738.

Aaaargh!!

I hadn't read this till today!!!!
This is BAD news. ( me not reading till today not the actual conference)
I would LOve to go to a conference like this! especially sine I'm doing media >_<

OK... the race is on people. Please PLease pray for me.
First step, calling the organisers and trying to get a place even though I'm the latest I can be in applying.
Secondly- convince dad it'll be good for me as well as the Islamic Ummah that I attend this. (convincing and sweet talking dad usually takes at least a week, I'll try to break a record though)
Thirdly- negotiate matters of payment ( and repayment o.o ) as well as trying to leap over the obstacle of how to get there (transport) . ( OK, take leap out (I wish) and replace it with : tackle)
Fourthly- Mum is coming home on Sunday meaning that I have to finish as much of the de-toxifying and de-germinating the house today ( which will increase my chances of going, however minimal they may be in dad's eyes)
Fifthly - Pray Istikhara right now

So, please pray for me
Inshaallah with  a lil' miracle from Allah, I'll be able to attend ...

(sorry for triple posting >.>  )

*But* !

I went today ( Alhamdulillah!)
First of all, before I give you guys a quick rundown of events. I am happy and thankful to Allah for having brothers. They are so convenient to just bug to go with you to places, which , otherwise, I would not be allowed to on my own.

Anyways!

Although I had to get up at 4 in order to get ready and catch the coach to London, I can honestly say iut was worth every minute of ( hated!) travel time.
The whole seminar was VEry informative. I had the fortune to meet many prominent muslim figures representing many different Islamic societies and organisations in the UK.
Also, it was a great event for networking, talking to people in the publishing business (I mean to delve into that very soon, will provide details to any of you wishing to know)

However, some of the highlights were:

The Presentation by Professor Greg Philo entitled: television News and the Coverage of the Israel/Palestine conflict.
He was appointed alongside a team of researchers to investigate the way the british media dealt with the palestinian/Israeli conflict. His team conducted a 3-year investigation and wrote a book on the topic. The results (which were the objective of the talk) were extremely interesting.

If I were to vote for something better than the talks themselves, I'd have to say it's the valuable bouquet of questions the mature audience present put before the various panels of speakers.

I had a video camcorder with me so was able to tape most of it ^-^ ( it took 4 whole DV tapes XD )
The snacks and lunch they provided with it also was great, and I met many other muslim sisters :3

All in all- a very very rich and ENriching experience ^_^
