Has anyone been watching the boxing olympics lately? Amir Khan is a local lad, not far from me, and he is a superstar in the making. He is only 17 years old and is already the talk of the olympics! Yesterday he knocked out his opponent, who is ranked No. 5 in the world, in just 90 seconds.

Forget Naseem Hamed, this kid is a REAL superstar in the making, a real fighter! He is class all over. Yesterday, just before the bout, he went to his corner and made Dua.

You can read more about him at the BBC website here:

We have a new star in the great fight game.

May he continue to rise from strength to strength.

I read an article about the brother in the lastest Emel issue.

I read on islam-qa.com where there were ahadith cited, that it is prohibited to hit another in the face...

It also implied that boxing therefore becomes haraam.

Does anyone know of something similar ?

tsk tsk Nisa, technically everything is haraam! Boxing is just a sport, especially ameteur and very few fighters ever really get hurt.

Why do muslims always wanna be the killjoys? why not chill out and enjoy life once in a while? sorry if i sound harsh, but we really are the biggest killjoys and miserable people!

Chill out, support Amir!

He's from Bolton in the UK.

But this is just the thing... we cannot just pass something off as "just a sport" or "just for fun."  Then you can say dating and drinking alcohol are "just for fun."  As Muslims, we must be firm in our deen.  I wouldn't say following our deen is "being miserable" or being a "killjoy" either.  In fact, the only way we can know true happinness and true success in this life and the next is to follow our deen.  We love what the Messenger  [saw]  loved and hate what the Messenger  [saw] hated.

I'm not trying to step on any toes here, but I think it's really important for us to recognize this.

i'm not talking about  drinking or dating, i'm talking about a sport, in which very few fighters have ever got hurt (in the ameteur game). Its a battle of skill, its not a war.

Why single boxing out as being haraam? what about watching all the half naked women in the athletics, or swimming?

In fact, according to scholars, living in the US and UK is haraam because of the type of society it is.

So why only pickl and choose?

If you wanna talk about haraam, include everything, not just the things that dont affect you.

Again, i ask the scholars to look at the rules of ameteur boxing and than define if its haraam or not, and not base their judgements on what the killjoys tell them about amateur boxing.

Brother resistance, my comment was based on your initial post...I didn't think it necessary to bring up other topics, because frankly we all know watching half naked women is a no no.

Anyhow...did you know a blow to the head, regardless of the velocity or strength, causes a shedding of umpteen brain cells?  The prohibition of hitting someone on the face has a lot of hikmah behind it...to prevent deformation of the face, to prevent grievous harm to the head which holds the most important part of the nervous system...I'm sure you know of the past greats which now look like a shadow of their former selves.

[Fatwa Deleted]

The Prophet [saw] and his esteemed companions would engage in playful wrestling...which to the best of my knowledge, is a test of strength as opposed to hitting your opponent as hard as you can so he falls to the ground.

wAllahu ta'ala a'lam.

Sister Jannah, many a time I have seen an admin post a fatwa (off the same site might I add) and nothing is said....there should be one rule for all inshaAllah.

JazakiAllah khair.

This is the rule. This is not a fatwa site. Our rules and constitution and madina netiquette get into this over and over again.

If an admin did that, they did it in error or in response to a specific question asked by someone for informational purposes only. Not in response to posts, not as a debate. If they did still, please forgive them and point it out the next time inshaAllah.

I think it's important to be consistent. I mean it doesn't make sense that when we're speaking about the same thing - participation in the Olympics - it's ok to ignore certain rules, but not ok to care about others.  And with due respect resistance (please don't take this as a personal attack, just naseeha), you are giving the impression that this is just what you are doing - you don't like women competing because of the haya issue, but you call people condemning boxing "killjoys".

Just my advice...
