alsalamu alaykum wa rhmat Ullahi wa barakatuh:-)

With reading the recent anonymous post about school and purpose of life, i got to thinking about focus. I mean focus in general. Especially with classes starting up again, how do you maintain your focus on the deen and personal spritual development? I've been struggling with keeping a focus even during the summer months...what are some things that help you peeps out there?

Oh ya, and everyone, please make dua' that Allah ta'ala eases every student's path with success this year 8)

Getting rid of cable helps my family!

We had free cable during the summer months and my family, including me, were glued to the tv.. including stupid reality type shows.

Alhumdullillah, I cancelled it a couple of weeks ago and with in a couple of days we were back on track as far as watching Islamic type videos and reading.

In my life, TV sucks alot of focus out of me!

I even put my tv in the closet for a couple of months and took up embroidery, which I havent touched since I got the tv back out again. However, it is nice to veg out to golf on the ocational saturday to give the head a break.

As to having trouble focusing, 1) Make sure you are eatting right and sleeping enough.  2) Make sure you have some quiet time even if it is 5 or 10 minutes a day to just sit and clear your mind. I do this sitting by a stream as the sound of running water calms and soothes me. 3) Think of what you mind wonders to or what activities you are drawn to that takes your mind off what you are suppose to be doing (ie: TV, pc, family issues) and once you find the source, try to deal with it.
Like, what is it you are thinking of or doing when you lose focus?

This TV stuff is for the birds ::)
I am in a motel and so disgusted.
All there seems to be is murder mysteries, real life type stuff, just a bunch of trash I have no desire to see.
I have a TV, but only cause of my DVD player. So I see things I want to see.
Other than news who wants to see all the trash on TV
As to focus, I just read about a new study and they seem to feel AD/HD
attention deficit, is due in part to the TV and say that the flashing back and forth of pictures and such they are begining to thinks may be a cause of ADD / ADHD
and that no child under 2 should be watching TV at all.
My daughter-n-law and I were discussing this, this past week-end and she was telling me how a friend of hers sits her infant child (Under 1 y/o) in front of the TV and how the child watches. I imagine it was just the flashing clolors and sounds that keeps this childs interest, but come one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A baby watching TV??????????????????????????

Jazakun Allahu khayra for your input. Kathy and Ajnabia, check on the tv....alhamdulillah, i can't stand it and have kept away from it for ages.

Azizah, i really appreciate your advice about taking a time-out and being consistent in doing so on a daily basis. I love going near the river and just taking a few minutes a day to sit and bring myself back to reality - remembering this world is full of the created and i should really be concentrating on the Creator ta'ala. But unfortunately, there are many times when its quite impossible to get away and focus.

What i meant by my question was how do i sustain that state of focus on Allah ta'ala  (in 'ibadah and mundane activites) with all the bombardments coming at me constantly? And if i can sustain it, how do i improve on it?

Allright, surely some of you wise peeps have some advice?

you basically need to refuse to consider anything that occurs as out side of allah's will, then ou might find yourself focusing on what within yourself you can do or what outside yourself you can change to have him start willing something more pleasant in your direction. That kind of thinking can take up a whole life time, but if its not enough, think about it concering familiy members also and if that doesnt take up all your time make more family.

salaamu alaykum,

two words -- mad dhikr  :)

also here is an *amazing* thread on the old board on eman boosters, that gives a lot of suggestions about keeping in a state of high eman and focus on remembrance of Allah.  it's one of my favorite threads, especially the post by the anonymous brother, may Allah reward him.

Insha Allah, I will share what a dear brother shared with me.

The way to never lose focus, insha Allah, is to keep our eyes on the goal... Jannah, that is.  InshaAllah, with every action we do, we can try to be doing it for the sake of Allah, with the intention of pleasing Allah ta'ala and attaining Jannah inshaAllah.  Even if it is not what we may consider direct actions for the sake of Allah ta'ala.  For example, if someone is studying in the university, why is he/she doing so?  If the goal is simply for the sake of "science" or for the sake of "knowledge," that will get that person somewhere, but it will only get him/her so far.  Eventually, when circumstances turn on that person, he/she may succumb to his/her environment.  But imagine if his/her purpose of studying was only of Allah ta'ala.  It could be that that person wants to study so they can make a lot of money and use it to build a masjid (or masajid) or feed poor Muslims around the world.  Or, no matter what field the person is studying, he/she could inshaAllah make the intention of using his/her knowledge and skills to benefit the ummah.  One way or the other, inshaAllah, that person will make the intention to study for Allah's sake, to please Allah and inshaAllah be rewarded for their actions.  The same goes if someone isn't studying, but is working.

The way this dear brother described this to me, he told me that even if he has to stay up a few nights in a row, as long as he keeps his eye on the goal, he feels as if nothing (but Allah) can stop him.  After he shared this with me, I began to try to have this mindset in my studies, and alhamdulillah, Allah granted me the motivation I needed to get done what needed to get done, even though I had previously hated doing some of that work.  When striving for the ultimate goal, only Allah can break our focus.  InshaAllah, I hope we can benefit from this.

Wassalaam,
Saam
