Thanks jannah for re-opening this up. Ironically, I have recently met a belly dancing Muslimah, I have wanted to ask her if she does it publicly, but shy to.

The reason jannah initally closed this topic, may be because of all the different schools of thoughts about music, and thoughts about instruments. It is a banned topic because many of us get into heated arguements defending our school of thought. I agree with her... ask your Imam.

From my limited knowledge, belly dancing is quite acceptable for your hubby. There are different thoughts about the use of a daff, too.

I can not imagine it being halal in public for many reasons, the outfits, the uncovered hair or naked veil of seduction, makeup, cymbols, the crescendoing beat leading often to ectasy for a man. If a women is to prodect her modesty... belly dancing seems to be the complete reverse of this intention. Some say it is good excersize, and it is... but there is no doubt in my mind, a woman who is doing it for a man, knows the dance's seductive power.

Now, peeps, I asked jannah to reopen this.... I will close it myself if we enter any fiqh schools of thought on issues of music.

We have a belly dancing classses here in KL,Malaysia and there are classes strictly for women only. No man allowed to attend the class. From what I have read from a muslim lady attending the class, it is very tough but good for the body as exercise.

If you are interested in attending a class, perhaps you should check whether it is a mix class or not, or get a personal instructor. If you are an instructor yourself, why don't you open a class for the women and let them have a great time (in the class and at home)!

My lebanese friend tells me that belly dancing is taught to girls in her country as a form of entertainment for one's husband only.  It is compulsory alongside a good islamic education.
