[wlm]

Well if you guys remember my thoughts on last year's ISNA, I talked about how there were a lot of good speakers, a lot of good sessions and everything seemed to be there, but there was no feeling, no spirit..no spirituality, like something was missing but we just couldn't figure out what.

This year's ISNA was completely different. It seemed very chaotic and disorganized. The sessions were staggered so people were coming in and out late, the power went out in half the convention hall, people were shut out of many many sessions because the rooms were at capacity, the bazaar was just insanity, the mics going on and off, and everything was so spread out. But what it did have was a lot of feeling and spirit.. there was like a wired feeling in the air like there always is at a good ISNA. The speakers were on a mission. They wanted to get a message across. The overwhelming message was that Islam is here to stay in this country, that we aren't going to back off and that we're going to defend our Deen to the last.

It's certainly a message that Muslims in the US wanted to hear after this last harrowing year where they've been through the war in iraq, abu ghuraib, injustice after injustice, people detained and locked up, 'randomly' checked, questioned by the FBI and they've seen more and more of their rights taken away, coupled by new waves of muslims having second thoughts about settling in the US and established families actually picking up and moving back.

It was a message we absolutely needed to hear. HY's saturday night speech was like an electric current right through the audience... enough to make people spontaneously stand up and give a standing ovation and have tears running down people's faces. THIS is what ISNA is about. To give Muslims back their identity, to make them feel they are not alone, for Muslims to close ranks and defend themselves against the outside hostile world.  ISNA 2004 was definitely one of the better ISNAs.

Some highlights I can think of:

- The main Saturday night lecture as I mentioned was amazing for it's message, the amount of people there and the hope it inspired. HY's political commentary, condemnation of the recent hostage taking of children in Russia and terrorism, criticism of Daniel Pipes internet test on a "good muslim versus bad muslim" (he said he failed and hoped every other muslim would too) and remark that this election is one of the most important and pivotal in history for the Muslims. In this case he said "anything but Bush" should be our position.

- Dr. Umar Faruq Abdullah talking about the greatness of Islamic civilization, from hospitals to caravanserai's, endowments for organizations, buildings, taking care of cities and people. His first hand accounts from Spain, China and  Turkey were beautiful.

- Suhaib Webb's talks all of them - his improvement in speaking from last year is exceptional. He was a good speaker before, but now he is great ma'shallah. Really knows how to talk to people on a one to one level, from youth to adults and brought in the crowd HY style ;)

- Muhammad al-Shareef's lectures - a true born teacher, no one fails to benefit from any of his lectures, whether it be on fiqh, ethics of differences to tajweed.

- The Bazaar - always huge always full of everything and anything.. there is no shopping like it on earth.. (this is coming from a world shopping expert ;)) from persian silk rugs to books, cds, indian wedding dresses, jewelery, art to financial, civic and local organizations. To see non-religious people excitedly buying Anwar Awlaki's lives of the prophets series is definitely priceless.

- Muhammad Jibreel!! leading the prayers. A lifelong dream of mine came true when I was able to pray behind him while he did the qunuut dua for fajr. Subhanallah just subhanallah.

- Dawud Wharnsby Ali hosting ISNA entertainment. Unfortunately the mic and sound were so messed up no one was able to hear or understand everything. People kept talking and socializing throughout which only made it worse. They also put the comedy last so most of the people had left before hearing Azhar Usman & company's hysterical routine. Native Deen looked sharp in their Shukr clothes and had funky graphics on the big screen during their show. Br Dawud in a rare public performance sang a new song of his at the end. They also showed a Disney style preview of the upcoming cartoon 'Muhammad'  and Sami Yusuf's new slick MTV style video for Al-Muallim - that this bro could be on MTV's TRL one day comes closer ;) One thing that is obvious is that Muslims are developing their products to perfection, which inshaAllah will open the way to a whole new industry that can support the artists. Perhaps one day our kids can turn on the TV and watch a nice Islamic show on Bridges TV, go to the theater and watch the cartoon 'Muhammad' and turn on their radios to hear some great Islamic nasheed.

- Dr. Ingrid Mattson, Haadia Mubarak and other sisters speaking, and not only speaking, but being supported in their leadership positions by fellow speakers and brothers was a great sign for the future. That brothers in high positions made it clear that they expected everyone to cooperate and respect the sisters was ground-breaking. Haadia as the president of MSA National is the first female as the head of a major Muslim organization in the US. Ingrid Mattson, the vice-president of ISNA also shared some personal anecdotes from her life growing up peppered through her academic speeches.

- Hatem Barzian (sp?)'s presentation using powerpoints tearing apart the Rand report written on how to cause division and disunity amoung Muslims in the future. The bro is as sharp as a tack. It's extremely reassuring to know we have people like him on our side.

- Qiyam al Lail with Muhammad al Shareef.. some great recitation and some good advice every time. The first night he told people to make a plan for the convention and to make a list of the sessions they wanted to go to and take notes to try to benefit for them. Then he gave us some good advice on dua and learning.

-MSA entertainment - spoken word, poem by zaid shakir and short satirical film "Ghandagee" brought down the house.

Some negatives:

-getting shut out of HY's sunday night session - apparently organizers have yet to get it through their heads that every HY session needs to be in the biggest hall. getting elbowed by aunties and pushed in every direction in the mob line outside the hall was pretty degrading. the fact that noone got trampled or babies get hurt was only due to one brother's (br Tabraiz) forsight of standing on a chair with the bullhorn and using his charisma to try to calm the crowds ;)

- slice of pizza $5, soda $3 need we say more? however oddly enough this has been the lowest prices ever of any ISNA and the soft serve ice cream and popcorn was also a nice improvement

-the best sessions at ISNA are the one's that are not recorded. how much effort is it for someone to get a camcorder on a tripod and record these things and put them on the web?? the 'ethics of disagreement' session by msa for example is one of the best sessions i've ever heard in my life. if it was broadcast across the world i don't doubt that it would bring about change, but like many things, it will be lost to history. (I just noticed that ISNA cut HY's sat night speech from that session on their website! :( on request? too political?)

-club isna? didn't feel it too much this year except towards the end.. and like Muhammad alShareef said, ISNA is what you make of it.. you will get what you came for.. and different people come for different reasons...and if you come to benefit, you will benefit.

Lastly, I leave you with what was probably the theme of this year's ISNA, the famous words of HY on saturday night after talking about all the hostile forces out there trying to destroy Islam and how they have never been able to do it and will never be able to do it...... "Islaaaam is indestructaaaaable! Islaaaaaaaaaam is indestructableeeeeeeee!"

Saaaweeeeet.   Well...I had to twist her arm a little, but since we don't get to see each other everyday or whatever, we should at least try to see each other once a year and what better place then ISNA for Allah (SWT) sake.

Fi Sabi Lillaah everyone....come on...who wants to meet up?  This could become a Madinan tradition, aye?

This year's ISNA was awesome Masha'Allah!! Personally for me it was one of the best ISNA's and i've several reasons for it being greaaaaaaaaaatttttt.. First off i didn't know till literally the day before the conference that i was going, so an awesome surprise and second off, since i was going only for like friday and saturday, i took advantage of many great lectures.. that meant less time at the bazaar!!

The bazaar this year was hugeeeeeeeee, less clothes and more audio/visual, calligraphy stuff. I don't know if it was me but less hijabs and abayas,jilbabs.. I was bumped out that i didn't have time to stop at shukr's booth but it looked hugeee from a distance.
Rhythmic Reflections friday night was really good, the best act/part for me was watching the DVD "Ghandghee" aka dirty in urdu, it was HILARIOUS!! The bros did an awesome job. I also really liked the last poem read by brother Amir , very heart warming and ofcourse Imam Zaid'd poem was really deep.

Saturday morning Dr.Umar's lecture on self awareness of God was one of Dr.umar's best lectures. I've heard him many times but he was reallllllyyyyy gooodddd, i've to see if it is available online. But i was kinda bumped out because i missed TJ winters and got to hear only 2 mins of his talk. And the best part was Dr.Ingrid Mattson was moderating the session. It couldn't have been better.

As usual there were soooo many parallel sessions and i wanted to go to each one of them!! They should have a week long ISNA!!

The MSA lecture with Dr.Ingrid Mattson and Imam Suhaib webb on brotherhood and sisterhood was really good as well, they both have such unique styles and them together was a very special duet. This was the first time i'd heard them one after another, so it was really cool.

The saturday night session that jannah gave the link to was DA BEST! The main hall was literally packed and my friends and I saw an overview of the hall from an height and it was just beautiful! I didn't get to hear all the speakers because was running from an MSA lecture with Imam Zaid but that's why the webcam comes very handy ;)!

I think the most annoying part was a lot of walking but the benefit of it was that we actually got to hear a lot of MSA lectures instead of waiting outside that miraculously they will let us sit on the floor like in MCcormick. The MSA natl exec board is simply amazing this year, sr.hadia mubarak is the first female president of MSA natl in 41 yrs and it was really cool to see Br.Altaf husain and Br.Tarek Elgahwary being extremely supportive :)!  The sisters entertainment sat night was really nice,  Sr.jellylegs was funnnnnnnnyyyyyyyyyyy! It brought back memories from last ISNA, trying to find shaiza to read her poem ;).

aite peeps much more to write but gotta study for a quiz..

wassalam,

Salaams,

Long time no hear folks, however, I was listening to one of the ISNA conferences right now 06/09/04 and I guess it might have been ok during the time the conference was aired, don;t know when. But right now it made me think to what I heard and heck man I can't believe I heard something like that due to current cirmustances in the world.

I ask Allah to protect us all. The net is a scary place.

Might come to ISNA nx year see what happens.

Anyway Salaams to you all.

[slm],

I didn't know that people were shut out of sheikh Hamza's lecture. Last year they had restricted it to MSA members only, maybe they got a flak for it. Quite a few people left midway and there was about 1/4th of the hall empty where they could have put in more chairs. Of course the best solution could have been to do it in the main hall, but when I went for the entertainment session there that night I saw how bad the acoustics were, so maybe it was Allah's plan to at least benefit some people from sheikh Hamza's lecture. The lecture was fairly long but very informative and scholarly, mainly giving a historical perspective on muslim's coming to america from long time back and america's relationship with the Ottomans, algerians etc. from over 300 years ago.

In the main hall, on saturday night's main session, they had acoustics problems, I heard too much echo and had to move and people constantly talking even when Quran was being recited almost made me get up and rebuke those aunties and uncles. They need more volunteers trained in crowd control spread through out the hall to keep some semblance of order. They also need some innovative ideas on fundraising. It was total confusion at least in the part of crowd where I was sitting.

Alhamdulillah overall it was very beneficial. I was able to attend a session on IT (organized by iTAG) in which a brother had an excellent presentation on how to startup your own business. The brother is in some executive position at PayPal/eBay and he put up his contact information so if anyone needs it message me. Maybe he can send you the power-point for the presentation.

There was an excellent session on the PATRIOT act with CAIR, ACLU etc. That session needed a bigger room too.

I had planned on not spending much at the bazaar, but couldn't resist it on Monday morning. But I bought more audios than books this time since I have too many unread books that I need to finish before I buy new ones.

Also, don't know why Imam Siraj was missing this year. May Allah protect him (ameen).

It might also be a good idea for MSA to keep some kind of a list for people needing accommodation. I had intended for my brother to come from East coast but he was held up with some stuff and couldn't come so I could have took in someone in my room. I was able to get a brother to move to my place from the second night onwards.

Asalaamualaikum,

I watched a few of the lectures online from the comfort of my home, alhamdulilah it
sounded fine from there.  I really enjoyed Hamza Yusuf's saturday night lecture, especially
the "anything but Bush" part.

As far as i know, Hamza Yusuf's recording are never up on the internet or never sold
except by his organization.  So i don't think ISNA was able to put it up.  I recall the same
thing for the RIS conference.  Some group was selling all the lectures by all the
speakers except for his, cause they can't.
Just thought i'd mention that :)

the saturday late nite entertainment thing wasnt that great eiter. i really wanted to watch that perils of prayer thing but it was like 2 am and they still hadnt played it yet and somehow my mom found me and i had to go back to the hotel room. its bc of all those stupid muslim rap ppl!! im sorry but muslim rap sux, whose with me on this? even imam suhaib said that just by adding an 'allahu akbar' here an d there duznt makae it islamic and there shud b a difference between muslim music and that of, say 50 cent. the sunday night entertaiment was a lot better. azhar usman and ppl were hilarios. that was so true wen he said that he was convinced htat desi ppl cud never be on time and he pointed out  that the words for yesterday and tommorow r the same in urdu, i was like that is sooo true. the 'lota' thing was hilarious too.
Dr. Hatem's presentation on the rand report was a real eye opener for me, i cudnt beleive wat i was hearing. it was funny wen he said for those of u who go to the white house, whenver u go order halal cuz ur paying for it with ur tax money instead of that monye going to isreal.. newayz

that's not true. previous years isna's taped lectures include those of HY. they are on their site for you to check.

as for RIS, i think they have their own regulations/rules and i have serious issues with them, but that is a separate topic.

Sh. Hamza Yusuf's lecture is too amazing for words. I haven't heard anything in a while, that has really moved me like that. Subhana Allah.

It starts at around 1 hour 30 minutes; and it goes for about half an hour. Everyone has to hear this Subhana Allah.

May Allah increase him in eloquence and Ilm, and may He increase us in knowledge and guidance. (Amin).

Timely address and to the point too. But it left a BAD after taste, in my mouth at least. Why he had to mention that the americans are forced to bring in people from 'places like india and pakistan'? That remark was neither original nor necessary. It was so banal as to warrant no refutation. But that is beside the point. The point is that it was uttered by a scholar of Hamza Yusuf's stature and that too on the most public of platforms. With the respect I have for all serious scholars of Islam and especially for Hamza Yusuf, it hurt. After realizing his miscalculation on bush's administration and making amends, the worst he could do was to shoot himself in the foot.

No I am not overreacting, this has happened way too many times with way too many people to be a fluke. And NO, scholars of islam are NOT sacrosanct as to be beyond criticism. In fact, they bear the most burden of what ever fisaad is happening in the world today.

With every passing day and with every nasty remark (intentional or otherwise) a racist demon inside me gets a little more powerful. The 'ulama of hind are amazing, never EVER have I heard such a thing as an 'aalim citing someone's nationality except for invoking something good and wholesome. With the incredible number of ethnicities and languages in south asia, its nothing short of a miracle! No wonder after the atrocity of east pakistan (read up on the web, its YOUR history) the people all across south asia still follow the same methodolgy with the same zeal and fervor, putting all their differences behind. But who the hell cares, they are all just teeming unwashed indians and pakis, they don't matter.

I am sorry for being such a killjoy, posters and lurkers. But YOU were being addressed at ISNA, not an alien like myself. YOU represent ISNA more than anyone else and YOU should be warned that be careful with words that you hear or utter. Maybe I should just be a good muslim and forgive this as a slip of the tongue or just inappropriate wording. But will I ever be able to forget it? Time will tell.

nice to b back on board!

Blieve it or not. this was my FIRST national ISNA convention!  Everyone said it would be an experience beyond comparison.  But actually i thought it was pretty much like the regional ones i went to - just a little bit bigger.  I wanted to maximize my benefit by staying away from the biggest crowds.  And actually my plan worke for the most part.

4 some reason i stepped in the bazaar just to see what they had.....HA! that place is like a time warp! I lost two hours in that place.  My favorite part of the conference by far, was listening to Sh. Mokhtar, the first speaker to make me cry in a long time.

You guyz might be surprised, but I was pretty close to the front of the line for the HY MSA session.  I knew it would be a two-hour wait, and the lecture would be really good.  And on top of that, this was my first time to hear HY in person.  Someone near me said, "look at this, with all these people here it looks like we're camping out for a concert - except this is for Islamic reasons."  At first I laughed.  Then i started to think about it....were we really standing here to get the benefit of the speaker, or had it become a popularity contest (with no disrespect to the speaker...sometimes it is the audience that forms this concept).

After a couple of seconds i decided, to leave.  YES i left the front of the line of the HY session to listen to someone else speak.  I decided to listen to my friend's husband (who had just been in a life-threatening accident) give a lecture from the heart.  within the two hour wait i got to listen to 2 really good lectures.

that *was* the point of my going to ISNA.  to get as much benefit as possible.

Mashaallah I just listened to T.J Winter's segment in the "Are you talking to yourself? Self awareness and awareness of God"...He was just *amazing* Mashaallah:)

http://www.isna.net/vision/convention/2004/session4a.ram

He said a lot of things that may be hard for us to swallow; especially in diagnosing some of the really HUGE diseases affecting us as an Ummah.

Please pray two rakaats, make a lil duah for Allah to open our hearts and minds; and pray for the rest of us in dire need of knowledge and guidance Inshaallah.

Take care:)

That lecture just made my trip. It would be an alltime favorite I would say... Allahu Alam, but certainly would be hard to beat. I have seen that sparkle of "yaqeen" in some people of earlier generations, people whom many might not think very highly of in terms of amount of knowledge they posses or outward religiosity, or we might think of them to be possessing the so called "cultural baggage". I see very little of that (yaqeen) in younger people (and zealousness is not necessarily an indicator of yaqeen in my understanding). Why is that? Even people who are "active" so to speak in deen, its just a component missing in action it seems to me at least... Allahu Alam.
