Using pills to delay fasting days

I have a quick question. I know this comes under Ramadan but I only wanted the sisters to see it so I posted it here.
Most Ramadans I miss a few in the beginning or end due to you know who.
Last year I missed some in the beginning and then I thought I won't get it and I finished the Ramadan and started the 6 extras. I was sooo soo very excited. Then on the 5th day it came. :( :( :(
I remember when going for Hajj many women used to take this pill to keep from getting it. They only took it for a little while, so I don't think it was a birth control pill. I just don't know what it is.
Any ideas??? I really want to fast the end. I get so depressed when I miss the end.

We try to avoid "sisters only" threads since both brothers and sisters have access to both forums.

However what you are asking is quite normal and natural.

Different scholars say different things about using birth control (BC) or special pills for the sole purpose of delaying/scheduling your period for Hajj. I know some in other countries do allow it. However, the Imam here who was asked for Hajj, said it's better not to.. However if you are on BC you can take a blank (or something?) to change/delay the timing and that is questionable, but not as bad as doing it just for that sole purpose. But taking pills on the whole to change something that Allah made in us as natural is not recommended unless there are exceptional circumstances, so it's best to ask your Imam or scholar. And no need to be embarassed inshaAllah as this is part of our deen as women.

The ruling for doing it for Ramadan might be something else because it is not so time specific/location specific as Hajj.

I found these rulings on the Islam Questions & Answers site (www.islam-qa.com). Please note the proviso that any meds used should not be harmful.

As far as I know, if someone is taking BC pills, she can omit the "blanks" and go straight on to the next pack - this will delay the period. Ask your doctor or pharmacist.

But my gut feeling is to agree with Jannah and say that it's better not to tamper with the natural cycle that Allah has created in us. (I'm not a scholar, however).

Here are the rulings:

Title: Taking pills to delay one’s period in order to perform Hajj

Question:

I am a sister who will be going to Hajj this year, inshallah. However I am expecting my monthly cycle to begin at around the time I have to so the obligatory Tawaf of Ka'ba.
I have therefore been advised to take a hormone tablet that my doctor has agreed to prescribe me in order to delay my monthly cycle until after I complete Hajj.
Please would you explain the Islamic standpoint of taking a hormone tablet to delay the natural cycle.

Answer:

Praise be to Allaah.

It is permissible to use these pills if they do not cause harm to the woman; that may be known by consulting a specialized doctor.

The Standing Committee for Issuing Fatwas was asked about this matter, and they replied:

It is permissible for a woman to use pills to delay her period at the time of Hajj if she fears she may get her period, but that is only after consulting a specialized doctor to make sure that this will not affect her health. She may do likewise in Ramadaan if she wants to fast with the people.

Title: It is permissible for a woman to take something to prevent her period so she can do Hajj

Question:

Is it permissible for a woman to take pills to stop her monthly period so that she will be able to do Hajj with the people?.

Answer:

Praise be to Allaah.

There is nothing wrong with a woman taking contraceptive pills to prevent her period during Ramadaan so that she can fast with the people, and during the days of Hajj so that she can do tawaaf with the people and not miss out on any of the actions of Hajj. If she can find something other than the pill to stop her period, there is nothing wrong with that so long as it is not haraam according to sharee’ah and is not harmful.”

I know that these things are quite normal but I find it to be quite uncomfortable to discuss such things with men and I feel that most men respect it if you say its womens talk or something and don't try to listen in.
As for the pills, thanks for the info.
Jazaka Allah
