everyone is not fasting tomorrow. a lot of people have differed from ISNA on some technical issues. The shura that governs the san francisco bay area has determined not to fast tomorrow, with the exception of few masjids. sacramento and stockton aren't either. Toronto locally isn't either. The texas ulema have also differed from ISNA, I think.

Ramadan Mubarak to whoever is observing

I keep surfing and reading and'll probably decide by my own fajr time.

Dang this is a whole big mess  :(
Zaytuna and SBIA of san francisco bay area decided that fastin is gonna be on sat.

MCA decided according to the ISNA.

I wont give n e fiqh stuff as its against the board whatjamacallit er constitution.

I guess theres nothin to be done >:(

Im still tryin to decide whether to fast tomorrow or saturday. Well im kinda opting on saturday since all the local shuyukh have decided so, Imam Zaid shakir and the SBIA imam. The mca didnt have a local shaykhs opinion and went along with ISNA.

Hope no fitnah arises from this situation. This is prolly only a test. :P

Ramadan Mubarak to everyone.

Pakistan has some serious issues with coordination.  Apparently some district in "Waziristan" started fasting today, and I just heard the news, which said that Ramadan starts on Sunday (HAHAHA).  I don't know if that's even possible, but whatever.

Never mind....ammendment: We fast tomorrow (Saturday), inshaAllah.

Remember me in your duaas, and I too will do the same, inshaAllah.

Wasalaam.

oh man i thought for sure there wouldn't be any division on this one!!

ack...... why can't we all agree to go with a shurah....they make the decision and that's it...

cara theres two opinions on ramadan.. one says the moon should be sighted locally, the other that it should be sighted globally.. hence the fight every year!!

Ramadhan Mubarak to all the brothers and sisters  :)

People in England never seem to fast on the same day... some mosques insist on sighting the moon themselves personally, others insist on following Mecca, or Pakistan, Morocco or whichever country they originate from.  I think most people started today though (Friday)

Hope everyone has a good Ramadhan inshallah   ;-)

I thought everyone was fasting today, Friday.  Appearantly two Austin, Texas people saw the moon, and my first thoughts were, are they talking about Abu Hamza and Se7en.   :o

If anyone was interested, here is how the shura council in North America based their decision:

Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim.

As Salaamu (Peace) Alykum to all.

I believe that an open and honest discussion should always take place and the process of an Islamic Discussion with the associated Islamic Manners is essential to our growth. Since there are many questions being asked, and this is healthy, I think it would be useful to go over the approximate sequence of events that took place (further details are elsewhere on my website) and how the decision of the Islamic Shura Council of North America was made. It should also be noted that some the Islamic Fiqh Council of North America members were also on the teleconference:

After my initial talk with the family in West Austin (Texas) and my initial evaluation based on their initial testimony I reported my initial evaluation to the Shura Council during the national teleconference.

I should add that the LOCATION (Azimuth) OF THE CRESCENT, to the RIGHT OF THE SUN (which had already set), and the ALTITUDE (height) above the horizon at the time of sighting, of about two finger widths (around 3 degrees), WAS APPROXIMATELY CORRECT. The only and serious initial contradiction in the initial report was in the orientation of the Hilal, where the ends of the Crescent were initially reported by the family as pointing down.

The Shura Council wanted to talk directly to the individuals. We could only contact the sister. I was surprised that the testimony was modified as to the orientation and now it was mentioned that the orientation could be "down or up, not sure, since the Crescent was a very thin line and a short one".

Since we are NOT dealing with very experienced Hilal observers hence it is understandable that many are unaware of the required details of a valid Hilal report and do not give sufficient time and attention when initially looking at a Crescent.

Based on the approximately CORRECT LOCATION of the observed Crescent (Azimuth and Altitude difference from the Sun) and the difficulty in reporting the correct orientation of a thin Crescent and that there were two witnesses the Shura Council accepted the two reports as of a valid Hilal.

I will also add that there was an independent group of American amateur astronomers in Arizona and among them was the world famous amateur astronomer who held the record of the youngest Crescent Moon Sighted. Among this group there were many who easily saw the Hilal with binoculars and telescopes on the evening of Thu 14 Oct 2004.

I should also add that the Fiqh Council had taken an earlier decision that Hilal Sighting could be done with the naked eye and also with the aided eye by using binoculars and/or telescopes and if the Hilal Sighting was of a Hilal then the Sighting was acceptable.

I hope and pray that this helps in explaining the details of the sighting report and the process that is used. Let us all join together and enjoy the JOY OF WORSHIP during this Blessed and Holy month of Ramadan. May Allah swt Bless us all and Grant Peace and Security to all, amin sum amin.

Your brother in Islam,
Mohib.
