I desperately need to find a resource on how to explain Islam's ruling on music to non-muslims. I got cornered in class one day and I don't think I gave a good  enough answer...so if anyone has anything please post it!

Ramadan Mubarak!!

Well... Music can easily be defined as a trick of the devil. I'm afraid I'm not able to give any Hadiths from the top of my head on this subject.

As a Muslim you should be aware that music is something that spoils and rots the Soul.
Take the latest song out in the charts and write down the lyrics on paper. Then ask yourself if this is something a Muslim should be listening to? Does this song remind me of things that are halal or does it remind me of things that are haram and things that a Muslim should keep away from? Will my level of Iman be increased because of this song? Will my ears witness against me in a good or a bad way on the Day of Judgment because of this song?

These are just a few ways in which a Muslim should feel and think about music.

May Allah grant us ears in which we listen to "tayiba" (nice and pure) and not for "lagga" (useless talk, i.e. backbitting, music).

Amen.

Wassalamu Alaikum
