ok here they are Bismillah Jazaka Allah Mashallah Alhumdulilah sadaqah jama's raka'as jummah dhikr sujuud SubHana wa ta'ala And Jannah there is a longer greeting you ususally use, (not salaam or Assalaam Alaikum) What is that? What does it mean? How is it pronounced? What is the proper response? Thank you all I'll add more as I find them. |

Bismillah = in the name of Allah Jazaka Allah = may Allah reward you Mashallah = (said when admiring something, it's praising Allah but I am not sure there is a literal translation....) Alhumdulilah = Praise be to Allah sadaqah = charity jama's = ?? not sure about this one. Maybe it is jamaa'ah which means a congregation (as in praying in congregation?) raka'as = "units" of the prayer, e.g. standing and reciting Qur'an, bowing then the two prostrations = 1 rak'ah jummah = ? jumu'ah is Friday or Friday prayer dhikr = remembering Allah sujuud = prostration SubHana wa ta'ala = Glorified and exalted be He (Allah) Hope this helps in sha Allah. It's difficult to describe pronunciation in writing! There must be some websites with audio recordings of words that could help - can any suggest any?? |

[slm] Sister Azizah, do a google search for "islamic phrases" and many sites will come up inshAllah. The only one I saw with actual audio was this one: http://aaiil.org/text/gloss/glosmain.shtml but it didn't seem to be working correctly when I tried it just now. InshAllah if you try it later it will work. I am absolutely sure I've seen another site that has audio pronunciation but I couldn't find it so if anyone knows the url please post or you could do a more intense search. Also, sis I would recommend listening to Islamic lectures or programs to familiarize yourself to these terms. There are many that can be found online. Lately I've been listening to the programs on www.radioislam.com. You'll hear these terms used a lot.
Thank Allah? As in, I am fine, Thank God My friend is better now thank God
Generally, you will hear Muslims say Alhumdililah ( Praise be to Allah) for the English "thank God" For instance, ask a Muslim "How are you doing?" "Alhumdilillah, and You?" Instead of fine thank you. or... I had a good day alhumdillah etc. etc. [wlm] :-) |
