[slm] I cut and pasted this from Islam Q&A: Among the Sunnahs for welcoming the newborn, the scholars mentioned that the Adhaan should be recited into the baby’s right ear so that the first thing he hears in this world will be the words of Tawheed, which will have a great and blessed effect on the child. Allaahu akbar, Allaah akbar, Allaahu akbar, Allaah akbar; ash-hadu an laa ilaah ill-Allaah, ash-hadu an laa ilaah ill-Allaah; ash-hadu anna Muhammadan rasool-Allaah, ash-hadu anna Muhammadan rasool-Allaah; hayya ‘ala al-salaah, hayya ‘ala al-salaah; hayya ‘ala’l-falaah, hayya ‘ala’l-falaah; Allaahu akbar, Allaahu akbar; Laa ilaaha ill-Allaah (Allaah is most Great, Allaah is most Great, Allaah is most Great, Allaah is most Great. I bear witness that there is no god except Allaah, I bear witness that there is no god except Allaah. I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allaah, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allaah. Come to prayer, come to prayer; come to success, come to success. Allaah is most Great, Allaah is most Great, there is no god except Allaah).” |

[slm] I thought it was the Adhan in the right and the Iqamah in the left. In case you aren't aware sis Azizah, the Adhan is the call to prayer. Its absolutely beautiful and often makes me weep. [wlm] :-) |

[wlm] In the fatwa that I pulled the info from, they said there was no basis for saying the Iqamah in the left ear. |

[slm] Hmm, does any one have an opinion on this? Since I have a lil one on the way, I'd like to know. Never realized this was an issue of contention I ran across this fatwa today from the www.AskImam.com site. What are the books that he sites in the fatwa? I'm not at all familiar with them...I also found a much lengthier fatwa here http://www.islamonline.net/fatwa/english/FatwaDisplay.asp?hFatwaID=13221 which is pretty interesting. When a child is born, in which ear do you do the Iqamat and which ear the Adhaan.? Also which dua is to be recited at time of labour Salaam al aikum WR WB Jakak'Allah khairun 1. The Adhaan should be given in the right ear of the new born and Iqaamat in the left ear. (Shaami vol.1 pg.385; HM Saeed) 2. The Aayat ‘Thummas sabeela yassarah’ could be read in labour. and Allah Ta'ala Knows Best Mufti Ebrahim Desai |

[slm] As has been shown already, the adhaan is an established sunnah. Regarding the Iqaama, this is perhaps a matter in which the scholars differ, and Allah (SWT) knows best. Here is what one scholar said with regards to this: Perhaps the correct practice - and Allah knows best - is to give adhan only, since the authentic hadeeth only refers to the adhan. As for the iqamaah being given in the other ear, then al-Baihaqee reports two hadeeth about that - but they are both weak as Ibnul-Qayyim says, and as such cannot be used as proof (Refer to 'at-Tuhfah' of Ibnul-Qayyim (p.22)) . That is also reported from the practice of the Khaleefah 'Umar ibn 'Abdul - 'Azeez - as being his action only. Therefore, it is more correct and closer to the Sunnah to give the adhan alone . |
