Flub flub

Okay so I am very, very confused.  See this is what happened...flub flub is my parent's computer.  The one I've been using ever since diago died.  Actually diago didn't die, I just gave him to a friend in Toronto.

Anyway, back to flub flub...he was really sick, see.  He wouldn't even turn on properly, I had to the heimlich manoevre everytime.  Anyway...  (I named him flub flub because that's the sound he made everytime I logged on)...

So one day, I turned him off.

And then I turned him on.

And he's okay.  Like nothing's wrong with him anymore.  He's even running at this crazy fast speed now, mashaAllah.  Isn't that confusing?

Okay no, really...do you think there's something seriously wrong with him, and these just might be golden days before death?

Are there ANY suggestions you can make to keep him running like this?

Thanks a bunchers.

Wasalaam.

So sorry to hear about Flub Flub, bechara.  He wouldn't turn on properly?  Do you mean he was acting sleepy?  Does he like to take naps, when he's not told to do so?  (i.e. he sometimes turns off automatically without you shutting him down).  If that's the case then I'm sorry to have to tell you this, but Flub Flub's power supply is failing and he will need one right away.  Yes, he needs help immediately, otherwise the whole system might get fried and everything will be lost.  :(

So what do you mean when you say his "power supply is failing"?  That sounds like a scary diagnosis.  And when you say "help" like what kind of help exactly...self-administered treatment?  Or do I have to find a computer doctor?

(heh, bro bhaloo i'm impressed at your ability to refer to him as a "he")

[slm] I am not sure about the power supply, but seeing that bro. bhaloo is in the business, I would accept his opinion, but I would ike to discuss and speculate a little.

In Pakistan, the voltage varies quite a lot, and if you do not have a stabiliser, then the power supply can be in (or give you) trouble. So, if you don't have one, get a power supply, an electronic one, not a mechanical one. The other problem with power in Pakistan is voltage surges and spikes. They can burn out the electronic coponents or damage the hard disc. If the boot sector on the hard disc is destroyed, you have lost it, although maybe there are ways of recovering the data. Not many here will take the trouble to do so.

I think if you have valuable data on the hard disc, take a copy, either on a CD, or another hard disc.

Sounds come from motion, either mechanical moving parts, or the movement of parts that are supposed to stay in one place, but don't. In the case of a transformer (which would be a component of a power supply), the electromagnetic sheets it is made of may not have been packed properly, and may produce hum. Wires may also vibrate due to the electromagnetic field.

My intial guess was the hard disc. My hard discs have made peculiar sounds when they have grown old, and have suddenly behaved well again, but the noise would come back in that or some other form.

Tibuktu, good point about the voltage stabilization issue, I totally forgot that Pakistan has that problem.  And yes, bad hard drives are usually the kinds of problems that people have (that's mostly been my problems as well), but in recent years bad power supplies have also been a serious problem, mostly because manufactures are making them cheaper.

I bought a new computer last year, and it would shut down intermittently (the CPU would be running extemely hot and then just shut down), and this continued for a while.  I ignored the conditions and finally one day it didn't come on.  The whole system was fried, all my components were damaged, bad hard drive, bad video card, bad dvd drive, etc.  I should have replaced the power supply, but I didn't. :(

I'm afraid you might have to take it to a computer doctor to get the power supply changed, or depending on how comfortable you are in using a phillips screwdriver and removing an object waying about a pound from your system, reinserting it and connecting some wires, you might want to try it yourself.  Flub Flub, what a hillarious name.   :D

You referred to him as a he, hence I did the same. :)

so the problem is with new computers? I guess the Chinese and Malay hardware isn't up to the mark. Wonder when JO's parents got their computer?

But the sound of "Flub-Flub", and the fact that JO only mentions the sound, not the computer sleeping or sudden shutdowns, or undue heating.

I think sis, you should check the computer for the symptoms that bro. bhaloo describes. If these are present, see a computer hardware expert to check out and replace the power supply, if necessary.

Stabiliser is a must.

In case your ckmputer doesn't heat up unduly, investing in a new hard drive may help you, but the old one isn't redundant yet.

So whats new???

If u have a computer its bound to have problems  :P. The only time its perfect is when the store attendant shows it to you ;)

My computer started getting extremely hot then crashed repeatedly. Putting a big fan on it full blast solved the problem. (Actually it crashed because i added a new video card and it heatd up the system :D now i got another updated one and its fine but gets hot though).

I keep my comp on 24 hours a day and it provides a nice heater for my room :). It hasnt crashed on me yet.

My power supply started to sound like an old car revving up, so i changed it so now its fine.

The bottom line is that i dont care what malfunctions...so long as its not the hard drive. It can always be replaced.....as long as theres enough cash to replace it :P.

p.s. I'ts kinda weird naming computers :P...it means ones got emotionally attached to it...like a pet u know....ducks out.

p.p.s. my comps got a dent on the case where i kicked it out of frustration one time. Did'nt do my big toe a lot of good though ::).

I actually don't think it's the power supply, but that's okay...flub's getting a check-up this weekend, inshaAllah.

Actually the same family friend who's gonna come by to fix the computer said that when DSL first came out in Pakistan (1.5 yrs or so ago?), it cost $700 a month.  Isn't that scary?  Some people actually paid $700 for DSL.  Considering it costs about 25 rupees for half an hour at a net cafe...that's absurd.  Anyway, it's cheaper now, so it's okay.  Even though it literally took them four weeks to install the DSL at my place.  And then my phone stopped working for another two weeks...so it's been a pain and a half.  Islamabad's ghetto like that.  I can only compare to Karachi...and last year when we were getting things done at our house there (that's where we planned on moving), it would get done within a day or two.  But I'm not complaining, really :)

Thanks for your help..I've made a note of your suggestions to ask this guy over the weekend.

Oh and Muslim...I checked flub flub for a fever.  He doesn't have one.  :)
