Thousands Sign Up For '1000 X 2' Qur’an Project

The project is to produce at least 1,000 men and 1,000 women who have memorized the Qur’an

CAIRO, Friday, November 12 (IslamOnline.net) – Over 6,000 people have signed up for the “1000 X 2” Qur’an Project less than two days after the project was announced. Those who expressed interest in the initiative come from Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Syria, Italy, and several South-East Asian countries.

“The Qur’an is the word of Allah and it is the duty of every Muslim to preserve it by learning how to read it, memorizing it, understanding it, and acting upon it,” Sheikh Mohamed Hamed said in a Ramadan TV program, Wednesday, November 10.

Reminding listeners of the rewards and virtues of those who learn and teach the Qur’an, the young sheikh announced a year-long project for what he termed “Qur’anic renaissance”.

The Cairo-based Egyptian thirty-something sheikh, who has achieved numerous ijazas (certificates) in all the different qira’at (ways of reciting) of the Qur’an, has launched an international project which aims to produce 1,000 men and 1,000 women who will learn the Qur’an within one year.

The project will be sponsored and supervised by institutions such as – The Egyptian Mashyakha of Qur'anic Schools (Mashyakhat Al-Maqaari' Al-Masriyyah), The Hosari Society for Religious and Social Services in Egypt, the Mufti of Syria, (Sheikh `Abdel-Fattah El-Bizam, and the Islamic Fath Institutes in Syria.

Hamed said the project will be supervised by official institutions in each country.

Self-growing Project

In a dynamic episode of the widely-watched Kenouz program aired by Iqra’ TV channel, the sheikh introduced the idea that had been on his mind for some time.

The idea of teaching the Qur’an started as a small-scale one-person project, with just the sheikh teaching a handful of men and women how to read and memorize the Qur’an in a small mosque in Giza, Egypt in mid-2001.

This then quickly developed to become one of the most popular Qur’an gatherings in the Egyptian capital. The sheikh started appointing outstanding students who read Qur’an with him to help him teach others, thereby paving the way for a boom in the number of students.

Around three years ago, Sheikh Hamed launched the Dar El-Hosari for the Service of the Glorious Qur’an, which is under the supervision of the Hosari Society for Religious and Social Services.

The Dar El-Hosari facilitated volunteer-based services in which thousands of people from all walks of life could learn how to read, understand and memorize the Qur’an.

“By learning the Qur’an, you learn how to be happy in both this world and the next,” the Sheikh tells viewers.

Although the aim of the “1,000” project is to produce 1,000 men and 1,000 women who have memorized the Qur’an, the number is by no means a limit.

Sheikh Hamed told IslamOnline.net that he wished everyone capable of joining the project would do so.

Concerning non-Arab speaking Muslims, the Sheikh announced that there will be facilities to enable international students to learn the Qur’an via the internet.

He further assured viewers that there were more than 350 teachers who were ready to teach and invited anyone who felt that they can teach the Qur’an to join the project. Among the Qur’an teachers, there are several who speak English, French and German, thereby enabling international students to participate in the project.

Qur’an teacher Samah Abaza, a 22 year old Egyptian woman who memorized the Qur’an, said to IOL, “This project is very important because it achieves the principle that there should be a balance between the worldly-life and religion. The Qur’an teaches us to be Allah-conscious in our work and our daily life just as we are when we worship Him.”

“This project will help break the barrier of fear between people and the concept of memorizing the Qur’an. When I tell people that I have memorized the Qur’an they are always amazed and think that I must be some kind of genius to do that. But I’m not, I’m just a normal person like everyone else,” said another young Qur’an teacher, Heba Adel, 22.

Touching on whether the goal of the project could be achieved, accountant and Qur’an teacher Hind Marouf said, “Yes it is possible. There are many people who have already achieved this goal, some in even less than one year. The most important thing is to have this as an aim. It’s like taking any course in college – by the end of the year, you have to have covered the curriculum.”

Qur’an teacher Rabab Gado, 33, agreed with Hind adding, “It’s very possible. If you can manage your schedule to fit time to read, memorize, and review the Qur’an, and if you supplicate to Allah to help you, you will achieve this goal.”

Dentist and 24 year old Qur’an teacher, Maha Mostafa, said, “Many people have tried to memorize the Qur’an on their own. But practically speaking, you have to have someone who helps you and encourages you along the way.

“This project facilitates that support. When you have other people around you doing the same thing and going for the same goal, suddenly it doesn’t seem impossible anymore, and instead of being just a dream, it becomes a reality.”

Judging from initial reactions to the announcement, the project seems to have both potential and the man-power and facilities to make it succeed. It will certainly be interesting to see the achievements that this enthusiastic group of young Muslims will have reached by next year.
