The question of food practices is going to come up twice for me in the upcoming weeks as I work to bring together different faiths. The most immediate situation is that the Unitarian Universalist church of which I am a part regularly gets the names of several families from the Family Service Department who might need assistance. This year the list includes a Muslim family. I'd like to make sure that the food basket, which we try to make as large as reasonably possible, follows muslim dietary laws. Can you help? The second way in which this will come up is in planning an interfaith potluck. Words of advice? How do we make everything as accessable as possible? Thanks again, Rina |

In regards to your #2) I would suggest you put a note up with the announcement asking all who contribute to write up a little card listing the ingrediance. Not only for Muslims but there are many people who have allergies to peanuts, wheat, dairy (like lactose intollerant) and nuts. Those are very very common allergies. So it would be a courtesy to all actually. Little cards like the ones they use to show wehere guests are setted at a table. #1) I need to let the others help you on that. Cause there are many products one would never think about, jello, some baked goods use real vanilla extract. Whoever answers this I hope they will briefly explain why or what is in them that makes them a no-no. ;) |
