It was a good attempt at animation.
If I were to discuss this movie as a movie and not as the life of the prophet (saw) or as an Islamic portrayal of the life, I would say the following:
- if the movie is meant for young children iit is quite confusing since they show no one, and discuss them. I understand not showing the prophet but they don't even show Hamza. They show Bilal though. I wonder why him over the others like Hamza.
- if it is mean to invite non-muslims to inform them of the prophet, then it assumes that the viewer already knows much. I wonder what the non-muslims would take home, except that the muslims shown in the film are kind, charitable people who do not discriminate based on race or gender. Many of the critical points that would stress so much more were under-played. eg the characters who would have made an impact like Omar Ibn Khattab (ra), only being mensioned in passing.

Have any of you seen it? What are your thoughts? Have you'll seen The Message?

It is extremely difficult to make any type of Islamic movie. People first of all have all kinds of objections.

First obviously the prophet [saw] can't be portrayed, and his family. Hamza is considered ahlul bayt, abu talib because he is not muslim is not and therefore shown in the movie.  The khulafa ar rashidoon... Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, Ali, none were shown. His wives the mothers of the believers cannot be shown, many of the sahabiyat. It took two years for this cartoon to get Al-azhar approval because of all the restrictions and checking for authenticity. The Message had no approval or such vigilant checking.

So... a seerah without the above major players the prophet [saw] !!!?? really can't be a seerah

But I think that they tried to pick out some major things about the seerah and then brought those out in the movie, mainly concentrating on the things the believers went through in the early part of islam. It's very easy to see good versus evil.. the villain, the persecution, the principles, the story. It was a perfect kids movie.

And it is probably the best Islamic cartoon out there currently and believe me cause I've seen tons with the kids and most are very poor quality and not thought out.

It's definitely a better cartoon if you know the background and details and educators can certainly use it to flesh out seerah teaching for the kids, but I don't think you need to know everything to watch it and get the main message.

It's definitely great for kids. I can't wait to get the dvd and show it to the inner city kids inshaallah.

I did not realize that it was a childrens movie. Our masjid told us to bring our non-muslim friends, so I assumed it was one of those cartoons that have a broader age group in mind.
There were children around me in the theater but the child next to me kept getting confused very often and asked a lot of questions, so I gathered that it must be quite difficult for the child to understand.
This could also mean that it would lead to good discussions between certain mothers and children, if this were the intent.
Yet, one must appreciate that as an animated film for children (like other animated films) there is an expectation of simplicity and clarity.
If you watched Prince of Egypt (about Moses), you would have noted that it was a well made animation of the story. One feels a little cheated in the end because it does not end at the expected period but much earlier. Nevertheless, the chapters that they address were addressed to completion and therefore even my non-judaio-christian friends found it easy to follow.
I agree that it might be a better version than many that are out there, at present. Yet, after all the hype and the $15 a ticket, it felt like a bit of a let down. Especially, after a documentary on PBS on Muhammad doing so much better.
This is just the opinion of the group I went with, but I am sure that there were many who felt otherwise.
