It must be only 'me'. Does anyone else from downtown toronto feel this event is put on by the sub-urban kids, who ttc it down to U of T or Ryerson, who are the kids of middle class muslim parents who have helped them, if not paid for their entire tuition, with no thought to the community of muslims who live in Regent Park, and Parkdale and the downtown core of Toronto? Last year, this event had Police Chief Fantino as a speaker, a person that went to Israel for training, then goes to Jamaica to 'understand' the Jamaican 'problem', local toronto people will understand what I am saying here. Inner city muslims that are in walking distance to Skydome didn't find this event 'spoke' for them, however, the non-muslim media of course thinks it does. Hence, with Fantino, a supporter of Bill C-36, aka PAtriot Act North, being present, it appeared that muslims were okay with civil libertires being deleted in Canada, where an activist like me is trying to get that act repealed. My gut intuition is that this event again this year is aimed at the usual market of muslims who used to go to the Labour day weekend isna conventions yet since 2002, have opted to skip the hassle of entering the States, Hence, this RIS december event sorta is ISNA-lite, Canuck style. Many people who know me were surprised I didn't go last year. After I explained it, they all agreed, if grudgingly, my point. Heck, a number of organizers know me in real life. it must be only me. |

[slm] I'm just curious, what would you like to see done? I don't think they even advertise it as an event for urban TO kids. I mean I TTCed/GOed it down to university from suburbia for four years. Most of my friends, however, live in Toronto itself (as opposed to the GTA). And their parents don't pay for their tuition, and they don't seem to have a problem with RIS. Basically, my question is, how would you change it if you could, in order to incorporate the audience that they seem to have forgotten? (Even though I didn't think RIS had anything region/class specific about it) Wasalaam. |

[slm] Ahh why does this always happen? There's always someone who has a beef with things like this. Bill C-36 doesn't speak for any muslims in Canada, even if they live in suburbia. And what is this about muslims planning and plotting to blow up the subway (I'm outta the loop). I think the organizers and volunteers are great, mashaAllah, and they've always done a fabulous job. And I've seen how hard they work, and how seriously they take these things. (Bro Fouzan is certainly NOT an exception to this). Wasalaam. |
