So, since I will be in my new home with my husband starting this December I need some advice and help from you guys.  it will be some experience for me! cuz i never cooked and done any house work before!  i can't even make tea properly.  i always burn the tea pot, burn rice if we cook in the stove or oven.  if its in rice cooker than its ok.  when i cut vegetables i cut my finger.  really, i have no idea what i will do!
alhumdulillah my husband to be knows how to make pasta, rice, and tea.
i will really appreciate if you guys (desi ppl) can give me some easy recipe for a novice.  stuff that i can find even in regular American super market.  also, i really want to know how to make halim and tandoori, and naan! those are hard i think, but maybe we both can try to make them together. it will be fun :)
other than that, is there any Turkish ppl here? he is Turkish, so it would be nice if i can make couple Turkish food for beginner.  what do you say? can you provide me with readable recipe?
inshaallah...

This is a nice easy potato dish, I'm going to make it again this weekend:

If youre going to make for about 10-15 ppl or so, you'll need like a
good sized pyrex dish (rectangular) or even the large aluminum
trays..even though you will probably end up feeding more ppl with that
one.

what you need:

8-10 potatoes, peeled and sliced in round shape
garlic, crushed, or garlic powder
some oil to coat the pan
black pepper
salt
some cumin
one small pint of heavy cream
mozzerrella cheese, shredded

what to do:

Peel the potatoes and slice them.  put some oil in the pan and turn on
the oven to 350 degrees.  Place the potatoes in the pan and add salt,
black pepper, cumin and garlic.  Mix well so that all the potatoes are
coated.  cover with foil and let it bake for 20-30 minutes.  When the
potatoes are a bit cooked, take them out.  In a container, pour the
heavy cream (add a bit of milk if it seems not to be enough or too
thick for you) and a pinch of salt.  Pour over the potatoes until it
almost covers the top but not completely.  Add the shredded cheese on
top.  Place back in the oven and let the heavy cream boil with the
potatoes for a few minutes more.  Then, turn on the oven to Broil and
let the cheese brown for a couple of minutes.  Enjoy :-)

Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah,

IMuslim, first off mabrook on your recent marriage and I pray that Allah (Swt) will grant you happiness in dunya and in Akhirah, ameen.

Second, I'm happy to see that you're up to learning how to cook new dishes and by doing so, you will be making your husband happy and fulfilling your duty as a wife, alhamdulillah.

Third, you said your husband is Turkish and I want to say mashaAllah. Also, to give you a heads up, Turkish men like their food and if you can cook a good Turkish dish for him, you'll make his day!  I can say this because I'm Turkish so I know how Turkish men are, alhamdulillah not much trouble though  :) For specific recipes, such as rice, tea or pasta, you can private message me. In different parts of Turkey, they cook rice differently but there's one way that we cook it and mashaAllah, everybody loves it.  Let me know what you have so far inshaAllah....

wassalam,
Betul

Anyone can learn to cook sis! I am irish but have become kind of accomplished in the desi kitchen! Including the tea, which does still boil over on occasion but I've got it down, Alhamdulillah.
@lala marcy: desi tea is cooked in the saucepan, made on milk. it sticks to the bottom and overboils if you are not careful  :o

Ok here is the EASIEST daal recipe I know - go for it!!!!

Bismillah!

I don't really know any measurements, but the thing to watch for with lentils (and rice) is that the dry uncooked amount looks waay less than what you come out with. So for 2 people a cup is enough.

Take a cup of lentils, rinse them off and pick out the funny looking ones.

Put them in a pot to boil with a good bit of water -- say enough water to cover the lentils and then half as much again.

Start to boil them.

While they are boiling roughly chop an onion, a tomato, some chillies if you like and put them in with the lentils. Add salt, pepper and chilli powder to taste.

When the water has become thicker and it has become soupier, fry a clove of finely sliced garlic in a seperate pan. Use about 4 or 5 tbs of oil. ie a good bit.
When the garlic has turned dark brown, then pour the garlic and oil into the lentils. You should have a lid on the lentils and when you pour in the garlic and oil then replace the lid really fast - have the frying pan in one hand and the lid in the other, coz it bubbles up really fast when you mix them.
Cook it for another bit until it reaches a consistency you like.

Serve with plain boiled rice. We always use basmati.
Finely chop some onions, cucumber and tomato and sprinkle with lemon juice and salt. You can serve this either on the side of the plate or sprinkle it over the lentils. It tastes goooooood!!

And as far as I know, Turkish people are into lentils too, so you can't go wrong with it.

Tandoori chicken is waaaay easy too! I'll do that in another post maybe

PS remember - don't stress it!! Try to have fun while cooking and don't be afraid to experiment! :)
