Shopping for baby...

[slm] sistas,

I notice quite a few of us on the board are expecting insha Allah soon or in the coming months. Myself I am due in abt 10 days time insha Allah!  :-*

Just wondering how you're all going with baby shopping, and incase you are on a budget like me...deciding on exactly what is important and worthwhile.

Perhaps the experienced moms, as well as better-informed-than-me moms to be have some advice as to what exactly are the essential things you need for the baby. Like the car seat, stroller, clothes, nappies, wipes, bathtub seem to be things you need from day one.. But what about sleeping quarters.. do you really need a bassinet/cot? I find bassinets soooooo cute, yet not sure if they are worthwhile as the baby wouldn't be safe in them in just 3-4 months as I understand. What about a rocker/bouncer....I imagine would be great to keep the baby quiet while u're in the kitchen/laundry but not sure.. ???

Any advice? And also any general advice/tips on how to manage in the first few weeks after birth, things I should be aware of when handling the baby etc, would be much appreciated..

May Allah grant us all healthy and normal children who will grow up to be pious mumins/muminas and assets to the Ummah, and uh ofcourse an easy and manageable labour...Ameen.

[wlm] :-)

Please make sure you ask all your questions to the nurses.
I just had a grandbaby last month and one last year and the nursing
staff was so nice and helpful. Do not feel embarrassed to ask, how to hold or how to nurses (not all babies nurse well the first day or two while others are ok first couple times)
No question is stupid, so ask, ask, ask  :)
I hope some of the sisters here will give you alot of advice.
Take advantage of the nurses there, they are there to help.
I pray you have a quick and easy labor and delivery, please let us know
how you are and tell us about the baby when he or she is born  ;)

Oh and baby swings are great as they can be moved room to room, the kitchen when you are cooking, the livingroom when you are in there.

As to car seats and strollers, both my daughter-in-laws got the stroller/baby car seat combo. The seat attaches to the stroller and comes off to use as a car seat. MY mother bought them for the great-grandbabies. Make sure any stroller/car seat combo or if you just get a car seat alone are safety approved.

When buying baby clothes don't buy too many tiny ones, baby's grow fast. I can practically guarantee that every friend/relative who visits is going to present teeny tiny clothes as gifts, and you'll have so many baby will probably only manage to wear them once before out-growing them.

Car seats I chose the birth to four years variety, you might want to buy one as a travel system combo. But I found travel systems to be too heavy for me.

Don't go nuts on the pushchair (though I can talk mine wasn't exactly cheap either) you'll be looking to swap it for a light weight stroller after a couple of outings.

I did get a baby bouncer, The one I bought for my sister was an all singing all dancing one. The one I got for moi was one with thin wire leg bits, so once baby got bigger she happily bounced herself (it was quite funny to watch). I reccommend one with a vibrate function you can then get on with other stuff whilst baby is gently rocked.

If you want a bassinet, borrow one from a friend and buy a new mattress for it, some baby's prefer a cosy bassinett to a big cot. My friends little boy would not sleep in a cot at first I think he was just overwhelmed with the big huge space. Alternatively you can always swaddle baby and put him/her in a cot. depends on your budget to be honest, I have a rocking cradle yours to borrow if you're near me (I'm in Essex) and interested.

General advice, enjoy the first few weeks, they grow so fast you will wonder why you wished the first precious days away. Cuddle your baby whenever you want. Personally I dont think you can spoil a baby under three weeks old (but that's me sitting here typing whilst trying to rock baby to sleep... ::))
Oh yes by the time your little one hits the first year mark you will know why sleep deprivation is used as a form of torture.... j/k  :P
Good Luck

[slm] wow!

does one actually go shopping for babies? :) can they be viewed before buying?

Is there a baby market, with lots of variety? Do they come individually crafted, or are they mass produced?

Maybe they can be viewed for purchase on the net. Perhaps there is an auction, or maybe a season sale?

seriously, my compliments to the moms-to-be. :)

don't take my remarks to heart. I just couldn't help it after reading the topic headline. I haven't read the posts. :)

Well if all goes to plan (and Allah is the best planner), our baby will be sleeping with us and I will be nursing him/her. That way no one has to get up in the middle of the night and we get to cuddle more :)

I haven't bought anything yet. Still letting the offers roll in. So far I have clothes offered and one woman is giving me a free pram/stroller, an umbrella stroller and a car seat.

I think things like changing units and stuff are superfluous.

I am still undecided on cloth nappies v's disposables. Hubby wants cloth (better for baby and cheaper) but I am v. lazy  :P
Cloth nappies have come a long way, you know. No more pins.. they close with velcro and are for all the world like disposables just more environmentally friendly and help avoid things like nappy rash. There's also a bit of a trend with cloth nappies when people start dying them funky colours and embroidering them and stuff  ;D
