How far would you go for an animal?

My cat had to have emergancy surgery last week to the tune of almost $700.
The cat has crystals that developed in its bladder thus clogging it's privates so
it could not void. I was lucky to catch it as his bladder
could of ruptured and killed him.
My son was a little upset and told me I should of just put the cat down.
To which I replied, WELL  >:( if you clogged up would you want your wife to put you down???    :o   To which his wife said at times she felt
like putting him down  :D
To which I replied, please wait till you give me more granddhildren   :P

Anyway, this was a young cat with 10 or more years of life in it.
It did cause a bit of a strain but in my heart I felt I had to save the cat.
It was not old nor a bad situation like cancer or something.

I always thought one could judge a population by the way they treated their animals, their elderly and children and such.
Which when I look at my country with all the throw away animals and elderly
I get a bit worried  :'(

SIster, although I myself would never have a pet other than a self contained fish tank or perhaps a bird ( I dont like mess); Hypothetically if I did have a pet and cared for it, I don't see anything wrong with doing what is within ones means to take care of it. Some people cannot spend that 700 dollars but for other's its okay. We're all God's creatures and if we can take care of eachother (even other species) why not.

I've read recently of the extinction of hundreds of species of animals as of late. If we spent some time as societies to try and figure out why so much biodiversity is being wiped out (plants as well) we'd save ourselves the headache we're going to face a few years from now. We (the world, individuals etc) need to respect creation in all forms.

Of course, if you asked me to choose to help a cat or a child, I would choose the child. That is why in many poor countries perhaps, we see dogs etc. roaming streets in high numbers. People have to worry about  feeding eachother let alone a dog. Some things demand priority. Here in NYC especially in the upper east side (thats where I work) I feel people take better care of their little pet dogs (those really small cute looking dogs) than they do their own parents. Depends again on how we prioritize.

This is a deep question. But I commend you on being so caring and loving to your cat. I hope we all find some love and respect for all of Allah subhana wa ta'alas creation.

salaam

Sis Azizah, I'd have done the same as you if it was my cat.

I don't think the problem is caring for and spending too much on pets.  Rather, the problem is that some people don't care enough for or spend what they can on family, friends and needy people.

When one of my cats became severely ill, I ended up spending a lot of money on tests and treatments for her (successfully, alhamdullillah).  At the time, my vet told me about a couple who had come to her with an ailing Golden Retriever.  The dog was diagnosed with an ear infection and needed immediate treatment and antibiotics. The couple decided they did not want to spend the money (a relatively small sum, like $40 including a follow-up exam).  They left, knowing that the dog was suffering and needed treatment.  The vet said she understands that some people do not have the financial means to tend to their pet's health needs and can't afford to purchase even cheap antibiotics.  However, this couple was well-dressed and drove off in a new BMW.  They couldn't be bothered with antibiotics for their dog, but they could pony up the $$$ for that car payment just fine.  >:(

depending on the animal,  i have driven i think 40 miles and have paid as much as $28.00 for a piece of steak.  If I knew that the steak would be really really good I would pay as much as $40.00 but that would be a really rare occasion.  i really love cows
