The King’s masjid (mosque) in Bhawalpur (seat of government for the now defunct state of the same name) is considered one of the most beautiful mosques in the world. When the Nawab (ruler, king) of Bhawalpur decided to build a masjid there, he also decided that he was going to do so from his personal wealth. So he had it proclaimed in the state that others should not even try to put in any voluntary or unpaid contribution whether financial, material or effort in this project.

Construction of the masjid was then started. One night the Nawab saw in a dream that he was in a most beautiful and enchanting land where there are also huge and attractive palaces. There were two palaces that stood out even in this constellation as the best of them all. The Nawab saw a young man, and asked him about the place he was in, and the owner/s of these palaces.

The young man replied that this was Jannah (Paradise) where the pious, the upright and the generous have their residences. One of the two most beautiful palaces belongs to the Nawab of Bhawalpur while the other one belongs to a poor old woman named such that lived at such and such location in the city of Bhawalpur. These palaces are a reward for the building of the King’s masjid at Bhawalpur, in which only two persons – the Nawab, and the old woman, have been able to make voluntary contributions so far.

The Nawab woke up and had the woman brought to his court in the morning. When the woman was brought, she was asked by the Nawab how and why had she defied the Nawab’s decree for not taking unpaid part in the construction of the masjid.

The woman was terrified at being found out, but gathered up her courage to reply that when she heard of the construction of the masjid, she wanted very much to make a voluntary contribution in it, but the Nawab’s decree had prohibited it. So she thought of a way of not being found out. She started doing manual labor, and from her meager earnings she saved a little to buy some bricks and some sand. At night she came to the site with these bricks and the few kilograms of sand, and placed them in the respective piles for construction. Then she asked the Nawab that if this was a crime, she was now ready to face the punishment.

The Nawab had tears rolling down his eyes and replied that no, this wasn’t a crime, but this had opened his eyes. Then he cancelled his previous decree and issued a new order allowing everyone who wanted to take part in the construction of the masjid to be able to do so without any hindrance from the state.

This is a great post  and there is also a lot to learn from here. Even though I don't know Bhawalpur, it really did open the eyes of the king, and the reader as well. Kinna reminds me of here, at our mosque, where I usually pray all my five compulsory prayers, we usually have miskiins outside. We usually give them something when we have something to give, and on occasions we have guys with lettters proclaiming the building of a mosque in a certain town or city and we don't let such opprtunities pass by, we give all we have then, at least I do, cause it's a rare chance and we'd love to make the most out of it, so whatever I have I usually give, no matter how small although we all wish we could give much more.
And also of the palaces the king saw in his dream, reminds me of the Hadith where the prophet (S.A.W.) mentioned to a Sahaabah who was with him( I don't quite remember who it was) of Al-Ghuraff, the lofty mansions in Paradise. Then the Sahaabah asked him if those were only for the prophets, whereuopn the prophet (S.A.W.) replied no, there will also be other people there i.e. the righteous, muttaqun.
