Insha'Allah all is well with everyone.. Soo, subhan'Allah, i've been assigned to give  our Youth Group chicas ages 11-17, weekly lectures.. sigh :).. its like MYNA all over again..Just seems like yesterday i was the one who sat through the lectures but now after going to University, MSA.. I feel as if things have changed quite a bit.. Today was my first day with the girls, after a brief intro, i gave them scrap paper to write what they would like to discuss! I remember in my days, how sometimes we thought these lectures  were sooooo boring.... Any suggestions on  how to make these weekly discussions, fun, interactive and a growing experience for all of us!

wassalam,
az

Talk about what they want totalk about. Boys, Make up, Dating, Dances and Clothes!
You will have them on edge. Just make sure you make a pact, that nothing leaves the room. If you can create a secure environment... you will make a difference.

I think you should mix it up a bit.  Discussions, activities, maybe some guest speakers.  Oh and the more specific your weekly topic will be, the more you'll get out of it.  I remember these MYNA halaqas from high school too, and I remember when things were too too general that the conversation ended resting upon one topic and one topic only: boys and marriage.  Personally, I found it boring, premature, and kind of discomforting.  So although I totally think this could (and maybe should) be a topic that you discuss...MIX IT UP a little bit :)

Also, I think girls that age have very short attention spans, so the information they receive needs to be in short bursts, and in varied forms.

I agree with Kathy that you need to make them feel secure, this is one heckuva vulnerable age (ugh high school was AWFUL), and your weekly lectures should be a fun, alternate mode of learning (and yeah socializing).

It sounds like so much fun, inshaAllah...good luck :)

Wasalaam.

as salaamu alaykum,

11 to 17!  man, that is a huge range.  maybe once in a while you can ask some of the older girls to prepare presentations/lessons for some of the younger ones.. that will help train them, so they'll have experience when their turn comes around to be sis ayesha :)

one thing I've learned from working with youth is not to sound patronizing.  youth this age are super intelligent and perceptive, so don't feel like you have to 'dumb down' content too much.  they really enjoy and appreciate the lessons if you engage them intellectually.  and they know if you spent time on preparing the presentation or if you put it together haphazardly.

I think the topics Kathy mentioned are really good to address, but maybe you can think of ways of touching on them through different lenses.  Like maybe one week you can talk about the story of Prophet Yusuf (alayhis salaam), which is an amazing story with sooo many lessons for youth.

Also I think it's good to be.. proactive, I guess is the word.  Like instead of just saying "our role model isn't britney! your value doesn't have to be based on your appearance!"  we can go on to be like "look at these amazing muslim women of our past and present and how much they accomplished and learned"  or instead of being like "hijab is required; here are the rules for hijab" one week could be dedicated to hijab styles or something.. :)

may Allah make it easy for you and put baraka in your efforts :)  let us know what ideas/lessons you come up with..

wasalaamu alaykum wa rahmatullah :)

when your talking about women's roles in Islam you might want to contrast with something like anime (sailor moon, etc).( yes 15 and 17 year olds do watch them)
