[slm] I am going for Hajj, and just realised that I haven't made much preparation for it.

I am sure I have said things here that have hurt, so first of all please forgive me.

Next, please make dua that the Hajj becomes easy for me (and for all), and that this Hajj is accepted.

shukran

[slm] Uncle Timbuktu!

May Allah make the Hajj easy for you and accept it from you, and all Hujaaj, inshaAllah.:)

Take it easy, look after yourself, make lots of Duaa...dont let the crowds or anything else bother you, just keep focussed on what you are there for, inshaAllah.

It is not an easy journey, may Allah bless you for undertaking it!

When you come home, you will be like a newborn baby :-*  Guess we can't call you uncle after that? lol ;)

Allah's blessings and guidance, and ease for your Hajj
Salam
Shahida :-)

[slm] Thank you all for the good wishes, dua and requests for duas. Insha`Allah I will try to meet your requests, for those who have asked for duas as well as for those who haven’t :)

Preparation for Hajj

Before leaving, one should prepare oneself
o      spiritually
o      knowledge wise and
o      physically.

The spiritual part includes (but it is not restricted to):

1. making amends for trespassing on other people's rights,
2. asking for forgiveness,
3. forgiving others,
4. getting used to saying prayers in jama3a, irrespective of the weather
5. learning the sequence and method and constraints of time place etc. of activities of Hajj
6. giving up haraam, taking up halal and recommended activities, etc.

One should also learn to be patient, as a lot of people have to be processed at immigration, transportation and hotels. Patience is not a virtue I have been able to cultivate :(

There will be a rush of people in KSA. The Hujjaj come mostly from the third world, and everyone would want to perform this ibadah and pray at the best places, and to kiss the Hajre Aswad, etc. I hate rush so, but this is a time when one should set aside his hatreds, and not complain, lest the ajr of Hajj is lost.

Information of how to do Hajj is available in books, CDs, websites etc. Despite expansion in facilities for the Hujjaj (plural of Haji), there is a physical limit on the number of Hujjaj, so the Saudi government allots a maximum number to every country. For Pakistanis coming from Pakistan, this year the limit was 150,000 people. The Pakistani government decided to allow 100,000 for whom arrangements would be made by the Ministry of Religious affairs, while private operators were allowed a quota of 50,000. Applications were to be in groups of 5-20. The applicants could form groups themselves, or the Bank placed these applications in groups. Each group had to have a leader.

I think in many, if not all Muslim countries, or where there is a large number of Muslims, some arrangements would exist. I don't know about the procedure for Hujjaj from the Western countries, but the Saudi consulate websites would give this, and there would be private operators providing this service.

In Pakistan, there are Haji Camps called Madinatul Hujjaj, at Islamabad and Karachi, the two cities from which flights to Jeddah are operated. The Ministry announced the dates by which applications on prescribed forms (for the government and private schemes) were to be submitted together with deposits in designated Banks for expenses. Then a ballot was made, and those successful in the ballot are informed. The ballot was for groups. So if one person was successful, the whole group is successful.

The Ministry was to send us booklets on Hajj. Here the Ministry was not able to meet the target. But I recently went to the Haji Camp, and obtained these booklets. An audiocassette was to be sent to the group leaders, but I guess it wasn't received. I was interested in a CD that the Ministry had produced, and just yesterday I managed to get a copy from a friend. Although much info was available through other sources, these booklets and the CD are very helpful.

Items necessary for Hajj: One should travel light, but with sufficient items, and know what is forbidden to take with oneself. The forbidden list includes any sort of eatables and drinables, any powder, toothpase, etc. Lists exist with previous Hajis and Hajj operators and shops where necessary and recommended items can be bought. I gave such a list to my wife, who had most of the items purchased through a Hospital employee. I will post one later after coming back, insha`Allah. If anyone here needs this now, please ask for it. When I am able to translate it, I will post it before going, insh`Allah. A few items still remain to be bought, and I expect to shop for them at the coming weekend or the Monday after that.

Relatives and friends gift items for Hajj as well. One set of ahraams has been a gift from my wife's friend, and Pakistan International Airlines will give one to every intending Haji traveling with them under the government scheme. Two sets are enough, but I have purchased another set because I do not know the quality of the ahraam from PIA. Since Hajj is taking place in the cold weather, warm ahraams are necessary. I am taking thick white towels for ahraam. To keep necessary documents, an ahraam belt is useful. It keeps the lower ahraam (towel) in place as well.

Many of my colleagues are going for Hajj this year, so there is a lot of local help and advice available, al-hamdulillah.

Some private individuals and organizations conduct tarbiyatai (training) courses, free of cost.

Health precautions and Medicines Colds, flu and bronchitis are what almost every Haji suffers from. The flu gets worse every year. I was warned to get this vaccination done, so I went to a private Lab for this. Pakistan Medical Association in partnership with some labs had issued coupons, which could be used for discounted vaccination. Medication is only allowed into Saudi Arabia on prescription in envelopes sealed and certified by the Ministry doctors.

My doctor says we will also have to take antibiotics as a precaution as well. So my normal and necessary medicine has been obtained. Entry has to be made in the treatment book by my doctor, who will also put the necessary instructions in each envelope. Where else will you find such cooperative doctors? :) It is courtesy of my wife whose colleague that doctor is. When I go to the Haji Camp on the 23rd, I will have to get the rest of requirements done there.

At the Haji Camp the Ministry has arranged free and compulsory vaccination against Meningitis after which it issues a certificate. Without this, departure for or entry into Saudi Arabia is not allowed.

Documents, tickets and currency The Ministry requires the intending Hajis to report 2 days before departure at the Haji Camp, where they are issued special Hajj passport valid only for this Hajj, airline tickets and foreign exchange in travelers cheques and some loose change, from respective airline and bank offices within the camp, after deduction for the facilities arranged by the Ministry or Saudi Muallims, like air travel, hotel accommodation, some transport (Jeddah-Mecca/Medina and back, Mecca/Medina and back if necessary, etc. Some travel arrangements will have to be paid for in KSA. I will go there on the 23rd of this month, insha`Allah. On the day after reporting, the Hajj ministry organizes training for the Hujjaj.

It is important to familiarize oneself with the procedures, both administrative and religious, so that one fulfils all the formalities, knows in advance what to do and what to expect, the precautions to take, and the help available.

I have read some of these, but quite frankly, I haven’t retained much in my head, so I will be reading up, and watching the Hajj training CD as much as possible.

Physical fitness It is also important to be as fit for this strenuous time, as a lot of physical activities have to be performed at different places in the right sequence and within time constraints.

I used to be very fit except for breathing, but that was 16-17 years ago. I tried to take up walking again, but I have felt cold, and cold makes me slow and sleepy. So I haven't been able to prepare myself physically. These are matters of concern: will I be fit enough for the physical strain, and will I be able to stand the cold without complaining?

A word about blessings: You remember about me losing that job. Even then I knew at the back of my mind that this was for the better. I think that was for me to be able to make this Hajj, as in that job there was no way my boss would have spared me for 45-50 days. It was simply when a colleague mentioned that the date for applications will expire in a few days, and that many other colleagues were going, that I applied for Hajj, whereas I had never seriously entertained the idea of performing Hajj. My worries frighten me still, but when I recall how Allah (swt) has been so kind to me despite physical constraints in the rest of my life, then from making the niyyah through the present, are signs that He has called me, so He will make it easy for me.
