With very limited funds..i have a choice between buying the "Hereafter Series" by Awlaki or the one about the Rasul  [saw].

I have been overwhelmed by how many new series sets there are out there. And I have fallen wayyyy behind on all of them; the mothers of the believers was another one i wanted to get way back when.

So if you had enuff money to buy only one set; which one would you get and why? Also what would be your number two/three choice (for future deniros :) )

aight help a sister out:)

Jazakumu Allahu Khayran.

If I had to choose between the two, I'd get the one on the Prophet (saws).  #2: Mothers of the believers...#3: the hereafter series.

Why? Ahh..remember the mercy/justice thingy?  Yeah, that.  lol.  :)

Wasalaam.

slm,

i haven't heard the 'hereafter' set but the awlaki seerah set is not bad, but i think HY's is better, but MOB is definitely the first one I'd get ;)

Jazakumu Allahu Khayran y'all :)

Another related question; is there any other *must-listen-to* series out there that I should keep in mind?

Or to rephrase what is the best series set you have heard to date? :)

as salaamu alaykum wa rahmatullah,

I haven't listened to the Hereafter series but I heard from my bro that he focuses a lot in it about signs of the day of Judgement, and doesn't talk as much about the actual aakhirah as he was hoping..

for me I'd really want the seerah set by sidi hamza yusuf.. it's pretty old, but I never got a chance to listen to it.. orrr umar faruq abdullah's new 16 CD-set on women in islam.. that looks amazing..

btw, you know sh. mokhtar maghraoui has CD sets out now, right?  the website is www.zawiyah.net

wasalaamu alaykum wa rahmatullah :)

[slm],

I've just started listening (have finished the first 3 CDs) to Dr. Umar Faruq Abd-Allah's set "Famous Women in Islam".  It's awesome so far, I would definitely add this one to your list. Each CD also includes class notes.  Check out www.nawawi.org, the link has a sample audio clip.

hope

Sr Nur al Layl, inshallah you will be able to get all of those three series over time, they are all good...if I had to choose between them, and the seerah cds ur talking about are also the ones by awlaki, I would personally get the hereafter series instead...the seerah series by awlaki is just the makkan period, and though it is good, i agree that HY's seerah is better...

I would pick hereafter because of all those three choices, I think it can have the greatest effect on the listener because of the subject matter...the aakhirah is the dominating theme in the early revelations from the Qur'an, so its a good first step i think to start with the hereafter series... as Aisha RA said, (paraphrasing the meaning from a statement of hers RA) Allah in the Qur'an first attached the people's hearts to the Aakhirah before sending down the revelations about right and wrong and about law, because that was the foundation of everything...

and btw yes volume 1 talks a lot about the signs of the doj but volume 2 talks all about the day of judgement and a description of jannah and naar...for those of you have listened to the series, the book shaykh awlaki uses as a guide for it, by umar ashqar, is available in english, its a series of books about aqeedah and three of the books are about the aakhirah, one book on death and the signs of doj, one on the day of judgement, and one on jannah and naar...they are very concise which makes it excellent because he compiled the information presented from all the available sources and presented it in an organized format in the book....and shaykh awlaki uses that book as a guide and basically follows it pretty closely...

sr nur, actually maybe you should buy the books instead and then with the money left over you can buy either MOB or seerah!

as for must-have series out there, there's lots and lots, but if I could only keep five, they would be:

1. The Life of Prophet Muhammad [saw] by Hamza Yusuf

For me this is the series that started it all, that opened the door to listening to lectures on tape/CD. Without it, I don't believe I would have ever got into listening to lectures on tape, so everything I have listened to since is because of that series. It might be one of the earliest (still only available on tapes) but it remains probably one of the best.

The series is based on Martin Ling's book in English and it is priceless. It's very informative and it's impossible not to hear it without increasing your love for the Prophet [saw]. I still remember when Hamza Yusuf read the entire speech Rasulallah[saw] made to the Ansar when they began to think he would leave them and stay in his beloved Makkah after Fath Makkah. Unbelievable. If that doesn't move you, nothing will.

For those of you who might be interested, Martin Ling's biography of the Prophet [saw] is available as an abridged 5 CD audiobook, about 6 hours long. Haven't personally listened to it, but it might worth checking out. HY's series though goes through the book and gives commentary so that would be my first choice. As for other Seerah series, the one Anwar Awlaki is only on the Makkan period, and it doesn't go into as much details as HY's series. It instead focuses on certain events in that period and talks about them. I love all of Shaykh Awlaki's series, but I think this is the weakest of his series.

2. The Lives of the Prophets by Anwar Awlaki

This is another older series, but it is great, and what makes it great is that it is great for all audiences, whether they are just starting to learn about the deen or whether they have been studying for a long time. It's one of the few series where I can listen to it over and over again because they are excellent reminders for daily life in the examples of the Prophets, peace be upon them all. It's also one of the most enjoyable to listen to; the quality is great and my favorite part of the series is that all the Qur'anic verses are interspersed during the lectures, and they are the recitations of all different recitors, not just one. From Abdul Basit, to Ajami, to Shuraim, to Sudais, to Shaatri, to Ghamdi and on and on. Those of you who love listening to different recitors of the Qur'an would love this series just because of this alone. It also increases your love not only for the Prophets but also for the Qur'an, and it motivates you to back to the Qur'an and read yourself about the Prophets. I'll never forget the section on Prophet Yusuf; throughout the lecture you hear his story through the Qur'anic recitation of Abdul Basit. This is a definite must-have.

I'm not aware of any other series about the Prophets (apart from Rasulallah [saw]). Abu Ammar Yasir Qadhi has a series (about 8 tapes I think) about Yusuf AS (commentary on Surah Yusuf), but nothing else comes to mind.

3. Purification of the Heart AND/OR Poor Man's Book of Assistance by Hamza Yusuf

It's hard to pick between these two, but I think these are the best of the series currently out there which are available at all Islamic outlets and bookstores, on the topic of tazkiya and refining character.

I've heard about a lot of people who listened to Purification and it opened their eyes to the concept of tazkiya. It's really beneficial and it's organized by spiritual disease, so HY goes through miserliness for example, then moves on to arrogance and then to extended hopes and so forth. This series has just been rereleased in CD format. HY's book with the same title is the series in book format essentially.

Poor Man's Book of Assistance came out a bit later than Purification, but what I liked about it is that it is more of a holistic approach. It doesn't focus on specific diseases, but instead starts from a basic starting point and then goes through steps on how to go from there, focusing on making and maintaining Tawba and Istiqaama.

There are a lot of other series about tazkiya, and they are all also pretty good. Purification of the Soul by Zaid Shakir is also more of a holistic approach to the subject; Imam Mohasibi's work is more of a series of advices rather than a set of sequential steps as found in Poor Man's.

Honestly if they were available nationwide (inshallah one day they will be), I would put Shaykh Mokhtar Maghroui's CD's in the must-haves, especially regarding tazkiya. They are extensive, organized and great. So far his series on Purification of the Hearts (28 CD's!) and series on Tawakkul and Sidq have been released.

4. The Hereafter by Anwar Awlaki

Already discussed this above, but I think it's a must have because it's a good overview of a pillar of imaan.

5. Islamic Teachings by Jamal Badawi

I'm not even sure if this is even readily available anymore, but it's been forgotten and I think that's a travesty. I think it may be online though these days, so maybe it doesn't apply to this list, but I felt it necessary to include it here because there is so much benefit in it. It was made more than 20 years ago and is the television show broadcast in Canada. The series is 11 volumes of tapes, dealing with the pillars of imaan and islaam, the social, economic and political system of Islam (all very extensive, including status of women) moral behavior, the Quranic sciences, the miracles of the Qur'an, Muhammad in the Bible, Seerah, and Jesus in Islam and comparitive Christology. This series is a great resource.

There are so many other audio lecture sets out there; here are some other favorites that weren't already discussed:

-Reflections on the Inaugural Address of Abu Bakr by Zaid Shakir. Very unique in that it goes through the inaugural address of Abu Bakr line by line, not only discussing the character of Abu Bakr when applicable, but touching on the lessons from his speech, discussing topics ranging from helping the oppressed, domestic violence to jihad.

-Gender Relations by Abdullah Adhami. This is really close to being on the absolute must-have list. Sorely needed and eye-opening in this day an age.

-Commentary of Sahih Bukhari by Abu Yusuf Riyadh ul-Haq. This series is on tape and is great. It is incomplete in that the shaykh did not get to finish all of sahih bukhari, but the format of it is basically he goes through the abridged version of Sahih Bukhari and analyzes the hadith one by one, and its a lot of tapes obviously. As far as I know no more tapes have been released, but the ones available go up to hadith 450 or so! You learn a lot from them, from general lessons and reflections, to seerah, to islamic history and the historical context of many of the ahadith, to certain linguistic qualities of the hadith, to rules of fiqh.

There are so many others, but this post has gone on long enough, so i'll stop...maybe talk about some more later inshallah...

happy shopping...too many cd's to buy!

Dang I can't Believe u guys missed "The Poor man's Book of Assistance" Audio CD by Sh. Hamza Yusuf.

It tops all of the above (In my opinion of course). It's also what most of the ppl are sorely in need of.
