A few years ago I was experiencing a nervous breakdown. I saw my physician
for help...he is a Muslim doctor and at the time I was not a revert to Islam.
He prescribed me a drug known as Alprozolam..also known as Xanax.

The prescription medication was effective in enabling me to sleep, relax,
help in agoraphobia, and delibiltating Panic Attacks.

However, I have become seriously addicted to the prescribed medication..
and have even been to a treatment center for substance dependency.

I have prayed, cried, and begged Allah to heal me from this terrible misery.
I am in severe pain without the medication..but the medication is making me sick
too. I don't know what to do. I am tired of living with this medication and
wonder what it is that I have earned the wrath of Allah...but since Allah is compassionate and forgiving I am not giving up that Inshallah I will beat this
disease. Your prayers and advice will be much appreciated.

Wa Salaam

Ah man..addictions are serious medical conditions.  That said, it will require a lot of self-discipline from your end if you truly want to get over this, inshaAllah.  Have you informed your doctor?

In my prayers...

Wasalaam.

[slm] I am sorry to hear of this, but all such things can be cured by Allah's will.

1. Ask Him like you have never asked before, rising a little before Fajr, prostrating and crying silently, and asking in prostration to be forgiven, and to be cured of such dependencies.

2. Start taking honey first thing in the morning. A teaspoonful dissolved in half to one cupful of warm water, every day. Take with ir a few (7-11) Black seeds. These are called kalonji in Urdu, and I don't remember the English name, but if no one comes up with the English name, I will search it out for you, insha`Allah. Don't take any nourishment for at least half an hour after this. (I would prefer one hour).

3. Before food or medication or this honey, don't forget to say "Bismillah" (in the name of Allah).

4. After every fard prayers pray the dua of Yunus alehis Salam:

These two verses are in Surah al-Anbiya

87 æóÐóÇ Çáäøõæäö ÅöÐ ÐøóåóÈó ãõÛóÇÖöÈðÇ ÝóÙóäøó Ãóä áøóä äøóÞúÏöÑó Úóáóíúåö ÝóäóÇÏóì Ýöí ÇáÙøõáõãóÇÊö Ãóä

áøóÇ Åöáóåó ÅöáøóÇ ÃóäÊó ÓõÈúÍóÇäóßó Åöäøöí ßõäÊõ ãöäó ÇáÙøóÇáöãöíäó

And (remember) Dhan-Nun (Jonah), when he went off in anger, and imagined that We shall not punish him (i.e. the calamites which had befallen him)! But he cried through the darkness (saying):

La ilaha illa Anta [none has the right to be worshipped but You (O Allah)], Glorified (and Exalted) are You [above all that (evil) they associate with You]. Truly, I have been of the wrong-doers."

ÝóÇÓúÊóÌóÈúäóÇ áóåõ æóäóÌøóíúäóÇåõ ãöäó ÇáúÛóãøö æóßóÐóáößó äõäÌöí ÇáúãõÄúãöäöíäó 88.

So We answered his call, and delivered him from the distress. And thus We do deliver the believers (who believe in the Oneness of Allah, abstain from evil and work righteousness).

So, after saying the verse 87, make your dua.

5. visit my blog. Search for "dua" or the sites mentioned in links, and read, maybe you can find something useful. :)

and look for this post (I think it at the very end)

a dua from Quran and Hadith

May Allah (swt) remove your sffering and make you well as if you weren't ever sick

aameen

this is a rough translation of the masnoon dua in Arabic. Don't have the Arabic handy, but perhaps someone will oblige.

thanks..today a remarkable thing happened alhamdulilla...instead of going to the medicine cabinet..a friend phoned and reminded me it was prayer time.
I went to my prayer rug instead. Inshallah it will last but I'm feeling okay
without these pills. Have a wonderful and fulfilling haj.

Bro you have my sympathies. Whilst it is a serious problem you have, there are ways to beat addictions. In my local community we have had a few cases recently of young men getting hooked on hard drugs. One of the brothers set up a rehabilitation program. This bro was also once an addict so he has experience of what its like.

The program he puts these guys on includes INTENSE physical training, running, endurance sports, sports and exercise that really drain you physically. Apparantly the benefit of this type of intense excercise is that it causes your brain to release a chemical which has an affect similar to that of anti-depressants and other drugs. It gives people a kind of high. I myself have expereinced this "high" from intense excercise i i suspect many others have.

Perfect example is when people have stresful jobs or lives, they often go for an intense run or gym session, and than often say they feel a lot more relaxed after it. This is the "high" affect training gives, and its totally natural.

Obviously other types of rehabilitation such as councilling are included in the rehab program, BUT physical exercise seems to be what everything else is based around.

So try it bro, it may help. I've seem the benefits of it on other addicts and it does seem to work.

When you exercise the brain releases a 'happy hormone' called serotonin, which give you a natural feeling of well being. Also, the exercise may give you something to do other than taking the drug.

It's funny how people blame God when bad things happen. Remember the example of the prophet Job and those who tried to help him?

There's a definite right way and a wrong way to do things.

The way of life people live leads to nervous breakdowns. It's the wrong way of living. Things are too fast and sometimes overwhelm people. Personality and temperament come into play too.

Doctors aren't God. They have great limitations. So when we abuse our lives, whether willingly or not, there is a cost to the body we have to pay.

I don't think God is punishing you. Just as God created 2 + 2 = 4 to be right, stress + nervous breakdown + bad medicine are wrong and are causing your problems. That's not God's fault.

God doesn't author evil or trouble. Only the rebellious one - through inciting mankind - does.

Learn the lessons from this illness. Learn patience and talk to your doctor about slowly getting off these drugs, letting your body heal the way God designed it to.

Just my 2¢...

peace.
