Assalam elikuim
One of my husband's coworker has asked for a book on Islam, something like basis or introduction etc. The ones we have are mostly for Muslims.
Could anyone please recommend any good book, Inshallah it will be a great help for a potential Muslim :)

Thanks
Wasalam

Idiot's Guide to understanding Islam by Yahya Emerick is a good one, easy read. But sometimes I have noticed that people have slight negative reaction when they see the word "Idiot" in the title. So I would try not give it to complete strangers. It would be a good idea to put in an explanation that the book is one of the series similar to the "Dummies" one and it certainly does not indicate your opinion about the person you are giving it to ;).

Why not just give him/her a copy of the Quran? Translation by Yusuf or Assad would be great. I have met many reverts who became Muslim simply from reading the Message directly from the Source.

After the Quran, if they do have more questions etc about the details. I would hand them an introductory work of some sort.

And please, lets not get into the discussion that only scholars are worthy/qualified to read the Quran directly  :P

Yeah, a copy of the Qur'an would be wonderful, i would recommend Thomas Cleary's, "The essential Qur'an".. It is more concise and summarizes each of the chapters of the Qur'an.. When dr.umar was in town he also recommended that how "Cleary's" translation is out now and is excellent.. so i have to look into that.. insha'Allah Also, dr.mattson recommended "The majestic Qur'an", which is available at astrolabe and the translation really is wonderful! But make sure if u get it, get the smaller mushaf..
You can definitely compliment it with sidi Yahya Emerick's book...!

I like 'What Everyone Should Know about Islam and Muslims' by Suzanne Haneef, and 'Islam in Focus' by Hammudah Abdalati.

I would recommend, What Islam is all about by Yahya Emerick.  Alhumdullilah, the brother really knows how to write and explain things for people that want to know about Islam, and in my opinion is the best person for this type of job in the west.  His books are great.  Although there are some problems with the Yusuf Ali translation of the Quran, I would recommend giving a copy of that as well with the brief commentary that it comes with (it happens to be the most popular one in the English language), its very reasonably priced.  The book can be purchased here:

"Islam: The Natural Way" by Abdul Wahid Hamid is a very good introduction book, it's written in simple, straight to the point language and covers many topics. Go here for more info http://onlineislamicstore.com/b2720.html

It's a good addition besides giving him a copy of the Qur'an, cause when he reads the Qur'an a lot of questions are bound to come up.

Check out this link:

It mentions the various translations and the weaknesses each has.
