photo album issues :(

as salaamu alaykum,

I am trying to put together a wedding album..so I printed out a ton of pictures, and have started putting them together, using rubber cement to paste the pics into the album.. the album is such that there are white sheets on which you attach the pictures, that you then insert into plastic..

I finished a few pages and inserted them into the plastic thingies.. and the next day when I opened the album it was soo messed up!  the plastic was super wrinkled.. it looked like the album got wet some how, and the plastic was like all distorted. I don't know why :(  I tried doing a google search on rubber cement, thinking it had something to do with that, and it turns out that using rubber cement is the biggest No-no for making an album, because it makes your pics deteroriate  :o

does anyone know about this stuff?  will rubber cement really mess up the pictures?  how long will it take before they start to deteriorate?  what should I do about the wrinkled plastic?  the album was expensive, and I put so much effort into it so far.  I don't want to have to print out the pics, buy another album, and go through the whole process again.. :(

i sympathize with ya sis.  what can i say, inna lillah ...

about the rubber cement, it is an organic substance which will melt certain types of acetates (the plastic wrap being one example).  also, i am not sure what kind of paper you used to print the pictures.  you *cannot* use rubber cement for everything - the container usually lists the materials on which it can be applied. if the paper was too thin (and not thick like that used for photo prints), it can leak  out the rubber cement. do you see stains on the pictures where you applied the rubber cement?  that is your first sign of things going wrong.  or maybe you did not give the glued photos enough time to dry out.  another possibility is that the album sheets themselves were thin and leaked out or were melted by the cement.

as for the wrinkled plastic; not knowing exactly the extent of the problem, or the kind of plastic you have i may not be super helpful here.  but, try to look for plastic covers to replace the one you have in the album. if you can do away with the plastic covers then by all means, get rid of them and insert tissue paper in between the album sheets.  but you *cannot* iron out plastic. i don't mean to offend, but just in case anyone thinks that plastics are ironable.

in the worst case scenario, you'd have to bite the bullet, print the photos again and exercise your artistic prowess by making your own album (there are really nice ideas at loomis and toles, i am not sure you have that in the us, here is a link http://www.loomisartstore.com/engl/scrapbooking/index.asp?p=2).  nothing to it, eh?

sorry, could not be of much help.  but perhaps you could take the wrinkled/damaged plastic or the whole album to an art supplies store and ask for their help?

take care
wassalam

There is a wonderful craft glue that although white dries clear and
can be spread thin with a knife.
I believe it is called Arlenes Craft glue in a brown bottle.
Dried quick, I would also dry one page at a time over night
before putting it in an album.
Can always use saran wrap to lay under and over and use a book
on top to keep flat, when dry simply peal off the saran wrap carefully,
Just use a very thin well spread amount.

Why not also check out Walmart for the plastic sleeves that
you just slide pics or sheets in? And forget the whole glue
nightmare?

Don't know if this has anything to do with it, but i've heard that u have to wait untill the rubber cement dries completely before attaching parts.

yeh, rubber cement should be 'tacky' not hardened but not soft..kinda sticky when you put the two different elements together- and yeah it will leak through paper eventually b/c of the oils. I remember using 'fun tac' to hold up posters while in college and it leaked through them and now these posters have little round oil stains on the corners.

for some reason I can't visualize the album you bought...but like sis azizah says, there is craft glue and scrap making type glue being sold for pictures. Check out walmart or something.

Good luck- I really hope you don't have to redo it all...but seems like you may/should.. :(

asalam alakum,
go to an arts and crafts store and ask them for materials for photos, alot of ppl do scrapbooking these days and they have materials that help preserve photos for a long time inshAllah (ie acid free paper, etc)....
