I had a lot of trouble with contacts...my eyes would start watering and would persistently itch.

And then I discovered the miracle which is DISPOSABLE contact lenses.  I wear focus dailies...my brother wears the acuvue ones.  I like mine better  ;)

I would seriously recommend these..less hassle, no cleaning involved, and more oxygen flow to the eye.  Unless of course you're getting colored contacts.

Advice: wash your hands thoroughly, every time.  My roommate from last year would use her own saliva to clean her contact lenses.  Not only is this simply disgusting, I would imagine it's dangerous for your eyes.  (If she ever reads this...you know I still love you)

They are quite fun I assure you. It is awesome to walk around and be able to see without some big old glasses.. No fogged up glasses during winter!! It's hard to wear glasses after...but do recommend getting a pair of glasses too, to wear during evenings, long car trips etc..

When you get the contacts you will take a little "class" on how to put them on and do's and don'ts and you can ask your eye doctor any questions you want..

Good luck :)

PS Justone just read your post.. that is gross i must say.. Also dailies are mad expensive!!

Another vote for daily disposables... can't be faffing around with lens soloution and stuff. BUT make sure you buy a bottle of saline soloution whichever ones you buy, it is very handy when it comes to rinsing out grit or whatever.

One big piece of advice, before you invest all the time and energy
and money make sure you are 100% committed to this.
They are a real pain at first. Sometimes having to change RX's,
not fitting right, not to mention just the adjustment period.
They are great if you are 100% commited.
Mine are difficult cause I have a estigmatisium (can't spell it)
and I can only wear a special kind which is a real
pain and when you get a new pair sometimes takes
different contacts till you get it right.
many times in frustration I have said THE HECK with in
and just put my glasses on.

Hi!

I have had contacts since I was 14 and I am 35 now, and I can say I have had very little trouble with them.  Another vote for disposables, though I have monthly disposables, not daily or weekly.

My only advice would be to give your eyes a rest from them from time to time.  As Jannah says have your specs for nighttime etc.  Also, even if your contacts are ok to sleep in I would do this sparingly.  I have a couple of times in mine and it was ok (nice to be able to see right away when I woke up!) but my eyes felt really tired throughout the day.

Anyone on board had Lasik?

LASIK scares me ...although I would love to be contacts/glasses free forever.

Other than the commercials on TV, though...I haven't heard a single success story.

In school I always learned, 4 eyes are better then 2!   8)

I know a brother who got LASIK surgery and his eye sight is great and another guy at a former work had the procedure done and his eye sight is like 20/15 (better then normal).  I think the success rate is like 99%.  That's amazing you haven't heard a success story.

Okay I guess I should stop distorting facts.  I personally only know one person who got it done.  Apparently one of her pupils is larger than the other one, and that messed things up.

So yeah, not a single success story :)

I'm another one who wears disposable contacts - but monthly ones, the optician I get them from does a really good deal.

Most important tip: always clean your lenses daily (unless you've got daily disposables), cos you don't want to mess with your eyes, and it's very easy to get eye infections if you don't.

Contacts are brilliant - I've been wearing them about a year - I played in the snow for about an hour without any problems earlier this year :D.  There's no way I could have done that with glasses - they would have broken >:( Plus you can see in the rain, in the bathroom when it gets all misty, when you come indoors from the cold you don't get all fogged up......the list goes on  :-/

Thank you so much guys! So far, so good.(except that one time yesterday where
my lense fell in the bathroom!!!) I have another quick question. When you are putting the
contacts on, how do u know which side is the RIGHT way? my doctor told me it would look
like a bowl, or"taco" if you squeeze it,but...its the same for me both the ways.
Also, just out of curiosity, what happens if you sleep with your contacts on?

It curves in.  If I'm unsure, I put in the line of my palm...the one that falls under the pinky, and then I "flex" my little finger (lol)...immediately you can see which way it curves.  Otherwise, if you can't tell...once it's in your eyes, it'll itch like mad if it's in the wrong way.

DO NOT sleep with your contacts.  Take it from me..I did this once, and in the morning I cried because the lenses like froze to my eyeball, and they wouldn't come off, and they were itching sooo bad.  In the end, I had to scratch it off with a paper towel on top of my finger, and it was possibly the most painful thing ever.  My eyes were bloodshot for about a day.

Wow Sr, Justone  :o I had no idea that's what would happen if one slept in contacts!!

The lense is the right way up if it curves in, if the outside edge is slightly curved out you have it inside out.
Try it with your lense, the next time you want to wear them hold it on the tip of your finger and see. The optician showed me how when I got my first pair way back a million years ago.

I have the same problem.  Because mine are soft lenses I fold them  :P , if the lense springs back up (ie won't fold in half) it's the wrong way, if it folds in half that's the right way.

Wow - JustOne that sounds nasty  :( - we need an ouch smiley.  Did you know that you can now buy lenses that are marketed as being 'safe' to sleep in? My sister tried them and said they're amazing - I'm too chicken to try them myself :P
