Luck and predestination?

Should we, as Muslims, believe in LUCK? like when someone says, "ooh he turned
out to be lucky". Isn't everything in the hands of Allah? and everything has already been
pre-destined?
I have another question. If everything is pre-destined(lets say, for example, that it was
predestined that this baby X would be Christain) So if it was predestined, logically, it
wasn't the baby's fault that he turned out to be Christain.how does it work out?
my basic question: YOUR religion was predestined for you, so how can you get
punished/rewarded for it?

Hey Anonymous salam,

I think that we have to define our terms first.. what is luck? and what is predestination?

luck    (luk)--
  1. The chance happening of fortunate or adverse events; fortune: They met one day out of pure luck.
  2. Good fortune or prosperity; success: We wish you luck.
  3. One's personal fate or lot: It was just my luck to win a trip I couldn't take.

I think 2 & 3 work.. but is luck really a chance happenning? Random? I think some people in this life are blessed by Allah because of their good deeds, and perhaps others are "lucky" and "blessed" as a test, or even a punishment. So it's really a matter of how you view this luck, it doesn't seem to come into conflict with predestination.

Predestination  (pri-dest-nashun)--

  1. The act of predestining or the condition of being predestined.
  2. Theology.
        1. The doctrine that God has foreordained all things, especially that God has elected certain souls to eternal salvation.
        2. The divine decree foreordaining all souls to either salvation or damnation.
        3. The act of God foreordaining all things gone before and to come.
  3. Destiny; fate.

I guess they like to use the word foreordaining there? ;)

In predestination, I think we need to avoid other definitions and go to find out what exactly Qadaa and Qadr is... I don't think it can be fully translated by using words like fate or predestination or destiny.. and that's why it gets really confusing because the concept in Islam is so inherently different.
I think definition 2. Theology totally doesn't go with Islam, because it seems like things are just "ordained previously" and no person has control over anything.

I think in Islam we are unique when we say that things are "destined" but we still have our own choice.

So every human being is predestined to be a jew or christian or muslim, a good person or bad person, having done certain deeds and not others etc. But why should that preclude us having the independence of making choices? Surely God knows everything and nothing happens without His Will, and surely we have choices otherwise it would be 'unfair' to judge us and we know that God is the Most Just.

So perhaps we as limited beings only know so much of the world around us, and we have these choices that pop up and chances and opportunities and various deeds. And in the end, Allah knew what we were going to do and how we did it, and in fact "willed" it to be this way. So what better way to judge us than our deeds and choices?

BTW I think there are 4 o4 5 other threads of this nature in this forum.. so check em out too ;)

[slm],

Anyone read the new book by Jeffry Lang, "Losing My Religion - A Call for Help"? I just started it. It kind of goes into some of these things.
