cooking Lebanese meal

Hello one and all:
My inquiry is 2 part.
1) What are some good grocery type items and or meals to make that one can purchase and prepare for someone going to college who is Lebanese?
WHen I went to some of the Lebanese recipe sites, it is very confusing to me on how to prepare meals, much less find ingredients for a meal!
I asked about things like hot dogs and apparentley he does not really eat this type of thing.
I am American and so forgive me for sounding totally clueless on meals etc.
He is my daughter's beau, and will be in need of some meals and grocery items and I would like to send or make up a care type package when he leaves and comes home on weekends.
He still lives at home and this will be an small apt. that he will be renting for the next 4 months for college.

2)Also, my daughter likes to cook and would like to make a meal for his Mom sometime that she would like as well as a dessert.

Any suggestions/?

Thank you! :-)

Peace Selah,

All ingredients for cooking lebanese food can be found in the middle eastern grocery store.  If you live in the boonies, you might have to travel a bit before you can hit such a store.  Ask middle eastern neighbours and/or check with the local mosque/islamic centre for location of middle eastern/arab stores.

To answer your questions:

1-Suggestions for items to send in a care package for a college kids:

* dates - majdool or tunisian dates are very nice and they keep well
* nuts (cashews, pistactios, almonds) - arabs like nuts!
* spinach/feta cheese pastries (can buy from middle eastern store)
* halal hot dogs or burgers (halal means that the meat was slaughtered according to islamic standards)
* feta cheese and labneh (we eat lots of those, lebnah is very thick yogurt)

2-middle eastern recipes

Recipes can be found at this site http://www.ummah.com/family/recipes.html. You can also check http://recipes2.alastra.com/middle-eastern.

* For the main meal, your daughter may try the --> okra (or bamya in arabic) <--  with some rice on the side or the --> ground beef <--

* For the dessert, a fairly easy recipe is  --> basbousa <--

(note text between -->  <-- is a link, click and it will take you to the recipe)

I hope that helps.

take care

:-*

Dear Mona,
You R the bomb!!
Thank you so much for the tips.
I just had a couple of questions
1) when the recipe regarding the beef one states "let stand for 1 hour to blend flavors" does that mean putting it in the fridge, or on the counter?
as would the hamburger not spoil then?

2) Are there any special dishes or foods/beverages/desserts to have for New Years?

3) This is unrelated, however, since my daughter is an artist, she wanted to paint a wall or door hanging in Arabic that says welcome on it for Wasim

If anyone else has any "family recipes" that you make that is popular with your families, that you would be willing to share,  I would be grateful:)
~Peace to all of you also~

Hello Selah,

I am glad to be of help. :-)

1-For the meat, by all means put it in the fridge.

2-We don't have special dishes for new year's celebrations.  However, there are very nice desserts (called ma'mool) that we have on Eid Al-Adha (this is a religious holiday that celebrates the season of pilgrimage to Mecca)....this is coming up on Jan 21/22 by the way.  But don't make ma'mool at home,  it takes too long and the results are not always reproducable.  You can buy it, also from a middle eastern store.  Other nice desserts you can buy are kenafa and baklawa (some people say baklava).

Another thing, muslims in general do not drink (at least they should not if they are practising). In addition, they do not like to sit in places where alcohol is served/consumed.  It would be nice if you did not offer alcohol at your new year's party, out of courtesy to your Lebanese friends.

3- the arabic word for welcome is "marhaba" or "ahlan wa sahlan" - of course we use different letters. see the post below.  the words are written in arabic so that your daughter can paint it.

take care

okay here are the arabic words, the one on top is "marhaba" and the bottom one is "ahlan wa sahlan"

by the way, arabic, like many eastern languages, is written from right to left.

take care
