An interesting article on eating disorders and how young girls perceive themselves in the UK.  Would you say that Naomi Wolf's view that American girls are less vulnerable to this kind of manipulation is correct?

P.S if you are interested you can only access this article for free until Saturday 15th January.  I don't want to cut and paste it here in case I get busted by the copyright cops :-[

I would love to think that we american girls are not as affected by mass media and don't have any image issues, but i think we're as messed up as everyone else (muslim girls included)

I mean have you ever tried to buy any clothes in stores?? I don't understand how they keep selling stuff that would only fit a 14 year old body?? And trying to find halal clothes??? forget it.....

Hahahaha :D ;D ! I remember years back, while a big teen, seeing the baggy, frumpy, ugly-flowered housedresses that even my Grandmmother would not wear! Now-a-days, you can't fit a 12 year old in clothes for people my age! :'( :'(
   What a crock! >:(
Have fun finding clothes! ( and  have a  [] )

Tell me about it - everything is too tight, or too short (and I'm not even 5ft tall!).  I stocked up on baggy tunics when I went to Pakistan in the summer - at least they had full sleeves.  Though I saw plenty which had no sleeves / were see through / skin tight >:(

salams,
i dont know if this should be a seperate subject, but its just a comment of the way
muslims themselves critize body shapes.
I was bought up in a muslim family,in my teenage years i was made to feel inadquate has a
woamn because of my figure. If we went shopping for clothes and there was one dress, my
aunt would say this would look better on my duaghter because shes got a better shape than
you.
I dont have an eating disorder, but listening to all this day in and day out from the
ages of 12+ i lost all confidence in myself and was sick to the stomach. I even tried a high
fat diet, that did not help me put weight on either. I was unaware of womens shapes and
clothes now i am absolutely paranoid. I managed some how to overcome all those issues
associated around personal appearance and acceptance. The problem now is a bunch of muslims
sisters have made very negative comments about my shape. your husband will not enjoy you
and things like that. so, from personal experince i think muslims are just responsible for
the problems with young muslim girls and eating disorders.

salam anonymous....

i have to say that being anorexic/bulemic or people making comments/criticisms etc really has nothing to do with being muslim. these are cross cultural disorders that happens in all societies. also these disorders are not just about "how the person looks", there are deeper problems going on such as depression, control issues, pressure, stress, abuse and so on.

so.. comments about how you look from family members... comes with the territory unfortunately...

Oh Jannah, how right you are!! As a young child, my Mother and siblings (once they got older) would ride me on being too big. And I grew up in a Presbyterian home, so can't blame Muslims there. I must say, it quit after I reverted-- which was before the first twin towers episode. Guess what I heard the next time I went home to visit?
