Since most meals require rice... which takes 20 minutes minimum. Can you increase the time to 20?

Unless you want to make it a real challenge @10.

Are we talking doing an appetizer, main entree with vegetables and dessert, like the show does? and do we get any assistants?

By scratch do you mean hunting the cow?  Growing the fruits and vegetables?

All kidding aside it seems like we have some real professionals that are eager to demonstrate their culinary talents in the kitchen and win the honor of "Iron Chef".  Very well, 10 to 20 minutes per recipe, and it doesn't have to include an appetizer, main meal, dessert.  If one wants to showcase some main dishes, then that would be fine.  The idea of 10 minutes was really to see what dishes we could come up with due to the limited schedules we all have and to come up with something that was delicious and nutritious.

Are we talking 'putting it together' time to oven?
Or total put together and cook?
It's late and I hope I'm making sense?
I know lots of meals that can be thrown together and put in the oven
in less than 10 minutes.
However cooking is not included.

No self respecting chef would use fake rice..... :P

Who are the judges?

Hmm... Cara I don't think we have a chance... they use and like those Paki Spices :o.... I have had many a discussion with a Madinat member and they have no appreciation for our ways of seasoning.

Cool, a man might win this competition!  Kathy, Jannah, and Azizah, I think you have some serious competition from Siddiqui.  :)

As for the judging, and where to send the recipes, I was thinking we could just post it out here in the public, for all to see.   :o  The judging will then be done by those that competed.

OK OK here's the first REAL entry:
GRILLED CHEESE SANDWICH (or, as Abdullah calls it: pizza): (you don't need a grill for this :P)
Cooking time: about 1 minute
Prep time: about 2 minutes (including getting the bread out of the refrigerator and slicing the cheese)

Melt butter in a frying pan (about 1 tbs)
place 1 slice of bread in the pan
cover it with cheese (a kind that really melts :D)
cover THAT with another slice of bread

Press with a heavy pan or a pan full of water
Turn the sandwich over after about 30 seconds
Press the other side

For extra class slice in half.... diagonally
::)

Voila!!

Not since the days of Abu Hamza and myself trash talking about who is a better team, the Lakers or Spurs, has the madinat experienced so much trash talking.   :o

20 minute brownies in 10 minutes? How is it even possible to do it in 20 minutes?  Microwave?   It takes me 45 minutes (baking time) to make them (following the directions on the back of the Ghiradelli brownie mix).  Sounds like a good entry, you should enter it.

OK here's an entire mexican meal that I believe shouldn't take more than 20 mn
-Chili:
brown onions in oil and add ground meat.  Add lots of cumin, chili powder, actual chilis if you dare, salt, pepper and a can or two of tomatoes
simmer for about 10 mn (remember it took you 2 mn to chop the onionsand three to brown onions and meat) and then add a can or two of beans (rinsed)
simmer for 5 more minutes, taste for seasoning.

-Guacamole
In the meantime, mash up a very ripe avocado.  Add salt and a couple of squeezes of lemon juice, and, if you really like raw onion taste, some raw onion or onion juice.

Serve in a bowl with tortilla chips.

You could also attempt salsa but it usually requires some refrigerator time--- about 2 hours-overnight, so it wouldn't really qualify.  You could also just open a jar.

Adding cheese on the chili is not required but you know the rule: the more melted cheese in your dish, the yummier.  Serve chili with flour tortillas but you could also just eat it with a spoon.

Hello, we are having a madina cookoff between the members.  The earlier posts in this thread explain all of this.  *cough*

So far here are the entries that have been entered and 1 week remains for the competition, entries must be in by January 24th.

MF: Grilled Cheese Sandwich, Mexican Meal (Chili and Guacomole with chips)
Jannah: Chicken pieces with salad (not to be confused with the cereal, muselmix and mueselmi)
Se7en: Italian dinner

I think MF and Se7en have done a pretty good job with providing complete meals and have raised the level of the competition.  It will be interesting to see how Kathy, Azizah, Siddiqui and Jannah respond and if they can rise to the challenge.  hahahaha   And will Br.Khalid, ummnajmah, lala mercy, Just One, tq and myself actually compete, or be too intimidated by the talent of the cullinary experts out there.  Only time will tell.

Bro Bhaloo I'm afraid I might be a bit of a disappointment to my fans
out there  :'(
I've been racking my brain and have yet to come up with anything.
I know several great recipes that I've made for potlucks that have
been the first things to go, people loved them, the prep time is 10 to 20 minutes, however that does not include cooking time.
But one can be doing other things while the dish is cooking.

You see Dear Brother.....A Great Masterpiece always take time  ;)

Okay here's my tuppence :):

1. Boil a kettle full of water

2. While the kettle is boiling measure out your pasta of choice (I generally use a measurement of 2-3 handfuls a person)

3. Once the kettle has boiled pour the water into a pan, top it up with hot water from the tap and add as much salt as you like in your pasta.  place a lid on the pan and allow the water to come to the boil.

4.While the water comes to the boil, gently sautee a small, diced onion, and a crushed clove of garlic.

5. Once your water has come to the boil - add the pasta and cook for the time shown on the packet (usually 12-13 minutes).

6.when the onions in your other pan begin to turn translucent, add a tin of chopped tomatoes, a pinch of sugar, a dash of chilli sauce, some salt and pepper and a level tablespoon of dried, mixed italian herbs.  Simmer this gently.

when pasta is ready drain and mix in butter/oil - whatever you prefer.  add the pasta to the sauce, mix gently and sprinkle with grated mozarella (and which ever other cheese you like to add some flavour, I use cheddar). Ta-dah! Dinner is served ;D

This all takes abt 15-20 minutes, but if you have any time left, roughly chop some iceberg lettuce and cherry tomatoes, and serve as a salad.

Simple Fast dinner ( under 20 min) , nutritious-covers the four food groups, beautiful to look at and a bit uppity!

Start with a Bismillah-

Shrimp Ettofee with Angel Hair Pasta
Broccoli with Butter
Garlic bread
Strawberry Angelfood Cake Delight

Shrimp Etoufee
1 lb precooked shrimp
1/2 c. butter
3T Flour
1/2 c. each precut frozen onion, green pepper, red pepper
1/2c. chopped celery
1T. jar minced garlic
1c. water
2T. Parsley-dried
2t. Lemon Juice- jar

Boil water for Pasta- start with the hottest water you can begin with, add a few pinches of salt and a dash of olive oil.

In a seperate pan, melt butter, add flour and make a rou.  Add onion, garlic and peppers, garlic and celery~  sautee 5 min. Stir in Shrimp, add rest. simmer 5 min.  Add salt and pepper to taste. (For those of you who like spicey- just sprinkle red pepperflakes on top!)

For pasta- get the angel hair kind that is in the shape of a nest , that takes only 3 minutes to boil. ( make pasta while sauteeing. Do not go over the 3 minutes. (You will get a blob)

Broccoli- cook in microwave with 2T water for 8 minutes, drain, add 3 T butter cook 1 more minute.

Garlic bread - Store bought French Bread sliced~ butter, sprinkle garlic powder, parmesian cheese and a sprinkle of oregano, on each slice Add a hint of paprika. Bake 10 min 400 degree oven.

Serve etoufee inside the nest, place beautiful green broccoli next to it, with a slice of garlic toast. The colors of the peppers, white angel hair pasta and shrimp make it a beautiful dish.

Angelfoodcake Delight- Slice store bought angel food cake, top with thawed frozen strawberries mixed with 1/4 c. sugar and canned whipped cream. Sprinkle with chocolate sprinkles.

Serve with a smile

PS. This meal is delicious, and even better if made with fresh ingredients!

salam,

Real 20 min ethnically-agnostic, ez-cleaning, braincell-saving, low-ingredient
recipes:

Tuna salad:

Ranch sauce, mayo, can of chunk 'white' tuna, pack of salad, salad onion. Slice
up the onions and mix with the rest of the stuff, proportions according to
taste. Serve with fresh pita bread and olive oil.

chunk 'light' Tuna filling for buns, pita, etc:

Slice 1 cup cooking onion, fry in a little olive oil till transparent, dash with
crushed cumin and corriandar seeds, fry a bit, add 1 can of tuna with its water.
Fry till the smell is gone and water is dry. Make rolls, sandwiches with hot
sauce, cheese slices, etc. Serves 1 or 2 people.

chunk 'light' tuna/salmon (your fav fish here) and mushroom (your fav veg here)
filling:

Fry 2 cup mushrooms in olive oil a bit, add ground red pepper (to taste),
crushed corriander and cumin, fry a bit. Add tuna/salmon, fry till the water is
dry and the smell is gone. Experiment with other spices, fried chopped fresh
green onion, etc for variety. Serve with pita bread. Serves 1 or 2.

subcontinental cheese curry:

Cheese block from desi store (its a lump of ricotta cheese). Heat oil, 3-4 tbl
spoons of crushed fried onions (sourced from desi stores), add a couple
of chopped tomatoes, add a pinch of haldi, salt to taste, ground red pepper to
taste. Fry till the tomatoes are golden brown. Add half a cup of yogurt, fry
till oil separates. Chop up the cheese block into small cubes, add to the pan,
give a quick stir till soft (30 secs). Done. Serve with fresh pita bread.
Serves 2.

Tips:
Heat up another gridle, pan. Add spoonful of oil. Lightly fry the buns of a
crisp taste.
Get those buns with a crispy crust, warm em up on a dry pan, before or after
filling.
Add chopped parseley, cilantro/corriander, etc for extra flavor.
Add a dash of garam masala/curry powder for a spicier/desier meal.
Use chicken, ground beef, canned fish, beans.
Same methodology :) can give you a 20 min ground beef dish, a 20 min
fried garbanzo/chick-pea dish, and so on and so forth.

Just to bring up the temperature of the water - it cuts down on the time you spend waiting for the water to come to the boil.  I've used this technique many a time when preparing the day's lunch in about 15 mins (don't you hate having to rush like that in the morning  >:(

This a recipe to use on those days when you have left over white rice and don't know what to do with it (so its not really cheating).

Shrimp/Crab/Vegetable fried rice

* about 1 1/2 cups cooked rice, or whatever you have
* oil
* 2 medium onions cut into wedges
* 3-4 cloves of garlic minced
* 1/2 tbs sugar
* 1 1/2 tsp salt (more or less depending on how much rice and your taste)
* 1 beaten egg
* 1/4 lb imitation crab cut up, or precooked shrimp or any frozen veggies you want (just microwave them)
* some green onions chopped

Heat the oil in a wok/ fry pan over medium heat. Cook the onions and garlic until tender but not brown. Mix in the rice, sugar, and salt, and cook until well blended. Stir in the egg until the rice is coated. Add in the shrimp and/or whatever you pick, and green onions. Continue cooking a few minutes until the shrimp is heated through.  It takes maybe 10-15 mins and tastes pretty good.

I made the most amazing dish yesterday using a rotisserie on my BBQ and received rave reviews from those that ate it at lunch.  I made Boneless Leg of Lamb, it was tender, moist and juicy and the marination was so well.  Unfortunately I can not enter it as it took 1 hour and 40 minutes to cook it! As many of the guys will be watching the 2 big football games, the divisional playoffs, and are wondering what to eat.  Here are some nachos:

Ingredients:
- Dorito chips
- Shredded Monterey and Jack cheeses (if you want to use 4 kinds of cheeses that works great as well, such as cheddar and provolone).
- sour cream
- guacamole
- olives
- diced tomatoes and onions (optional ingredients)

On a small microwavable tray lay out a layer of the chips and apply a generous portion of the cheeses over it.

Depending on how many people you are making this for, put another layer of chips and the cheese on top of it.

Put it in the microwave for no more then 3 minutes (depending on the size of the dish and wattage of the microwave, it could be done in a 1:20).  When the cheese just starts to melt in the microwave, stop it, if you let it go too long then the cheese will not maintain its gooeyness.

Apply the diced tomatoes/onions then apply some sour cream and guacomole, and finally top with olives.

My main meal that I will be presenting will appear shortly. Hint, *Arigato Mr. Roboto*.

Chicken Cordon Blu Casserole with either
Salad or steamed veggies

2  boneless chicken breasts
4 extra thick sliced (your choice)
     Turkey Pastrami   or
      Turkey Ham
3 extra thick sliced swiss cheese
1/2 cup bread crumbs (I prefer progressive's Italian spiced crumb)
salt and pepper

Casserole dish with lid
boiler for steamed veggies.

Pre-heat oven to 375
(also start boiling water for steaming the veggies)

Salt and pepper chicken breast lightly
Quickly  ;) cube chicken breast, turkey pastrami and swiss cheese
and sprinkle bread crumbs and mix well.

Cover casserole dish and put in oven for 15 to 18 mins,
But take off the cover about the last 5 mins.
For those, who like me, think the best part of mac and cheese is
the top crusty part and want a little bit of the cheese to crust,
cook an additional 5 mins with the top off
(10 mins uncovered total)

While you're casserole is in the oven steam your favorite veggies
or make a simple salad.

The above recipe is my own cause one day I was suppose
to be making chicken cordon blu, one of my family's favorite.
I had just moved and could not find my extra long toothpicks
to hold the chicken cordon blu's in place after wrapping.
In a lazy last  desperate attempt I just cubed everything and threw it all together in a casserole dish.
It was a huge hit and now I don't have to take time malleting
chicken breasts flat anymore hehe.
Hope anyone who tried it enjoys it.

Sumi ma sen...

Konichiwa!

Shrimp and Vegetable Tempura
Ingredients:
1 egg
1 cup COLD water (secret ingredient, COLD water)
1 cup flour

Shrimp and various vegetables (onions (thinkly sliced), egg plant (thinly sliced), brocolli).  I think you can use yellow squash thinly sliced, I haven't tried using squash.

mix the batter and and dip in the shrimp and/or vegetables and then deep fry the items for about 3 minutes, (until golden brown) at 340 to 360 degrees.  May need to experiment a bit (i've done this only once and it came out great).

Chicken Teriyaki
Take about a pound or two of chicken breast and chop it up into bite size pieces.  In a wok with a little bit of oil and the stove turned onto high, dump the chicken in and mix it up a bit.  It takes less then 10 minutes.  To determine if the chicken is cooked, use that spatula-stir-fry-thingie and use it to break a chicken piece in half, chicken should be cooked all the way through, if it isn't let it cook some more.  about half way through pour in some teriyaki sauce and and for fun toss in cashews or peanuts.  scallions are a nice touch as well.

Japanese Salad
Take some muessili (or whatever thing Jannah was referring to), hahahaha.  Actually, Dole sells this salad leaves bag and add some sesame dressing (its an orange sauce, looks kinda like thousand island, but its not).  or alternatively you could just add soy sauce to the salad instead of the sesame dressing.

Steamed Rice
Take a cup of rice and add 2 cups of water to a pot.  Turn the stove all the way on and let it go.  I think this takes about 15 mintues.  Check the rice by tasting a single grain.  Is it hard or soft?  If its soft it means its cooked.  Use a strainer to dump out excess water in the sink.

Japanese vegetables stir fried
Mushrooms, bite size zucchini pieces, and bean sprouts.  Stir fry with a little oil, salt and pepper.  Yum yum.

Soyonara!

p.s.  Looks like the men totally dominated this competition . High fives siddiqui

:o okay wowww.. talk about multi-tasking.. I was just talking to someone on the phone and I was about to pour some pepsi into a cereal bowl.. so I don't think I could handle working four stoves at the same time..

speaking of which -- I totally forgot a main part of my italian dinner -- the pasta! (duhh)

the recipe should read like this:  (I'll go back and change it insha'Allah)

my entry................

a complete italian dinner in 20 minutes!!!

1.  boil water on the stovetop.

2.  cut 4 pieces of chicken breast into thin strips.

3.  shake n bake the chicken italian style.  add some parmesean to the bag, coat the strips, and then lay them out in a glass casserole dish.

4.  bake chicken @ 400 degrees for 18 min.

5.  when the water has boiled, add half a box of penne pasta and some salt.

6.  put pre-packaged salad in a bowl.

7.  toast some italian bread, put on a pretty plate with margarine or butter.

8.  take chicken out of the oven, pour marinara/spaghetti sauce on top of chicken, and then shredded mozzarella.

9. drain pasta and serve.

voila! you have chicken parmagiana, pasta, italian bread and salad all in 20 minutes  :) serve and enjoy :)

Se7en you might be disqualified for having a late entry.  Tsk, tsk, tsk, too much pressure.

The first madinat iron chef competition has come to a close.  I was a little disappointed that there weren't more participants and more ethnic dishes with fancy spices.  I was also curious to see how Br. Khalid's Fish & Chips ice cream (British recipe) would come out.  I've had donut ice cream before and I imagine the fish ice cream would be the same way.  (i.e. fish pieces in the middle of vanilla ice cream with a bit of tartar sauce mixed in).  And also Just One's 20 minute brownies in 10 minutes.  But so much for those entries.

Now the judging must take place.  Please vote on the top 3 entrants here.  You can not vote for yourself.  And leave comments as to why you chose the entries.

The only people allowed to vote are:
Se7en, Kathy, Jannah, Bhaloo, azizah, Siddiqui,  Attia, MF, Umm_Ibby.

Please go back and review the dishes others made and vote on the top 3 people here.  List them out, i.e.
1). 1st place chef's name
2). Chef #2
3)  chef #3

We'll tabulate results at the end and see who is the winner.

Put it out in the open for all to see. But before making comments, it would be a good idea to revisit the rules of the contest and make sure the comments are relevant.  The contest required that A *RECIPE* be done in 20 minutes.  Some people put up a bunch of dishes.  The question is, could each of those dishes (individually) be done in 20 minutes?   As an example, Se7en gave a complete meal that could be done in 20 minutes, is it possible?  Only Abu Hamza knows. ;)  But she wasn't required to do that, each of her recipes (chicken thingie, salad, bread) could be prepared in 20 minutes and therefore she did not violate the rules.  I say this because I know you will all be fair in the judging. :)

Wow I am veeerrryyyyyy late but lol this thread is fun.  Anyways...I am not entering this competition but wanna share a simple 8mins meal that u can whip up for those *surprise* guests.

Chicken macaroni soup

1/2 packet of macaroni
1 can of halal mushroom soup
100g of leftover chicken (i always clean, re-bake and shred ALL leftover chicken and keep it in the fridge)
salt to taste
paprika or any other garnishing ( i also use basil and thyme)
frozen mixed vegetable (peas, carrots yada yada)

Half-cook the macaroni and sieve. Bring the mushroom soup to boil and add the chicken, salt, garnishing and vegetables. Allow to stand for 1 min and add the macaroni. Stir slowly to mix everything until macaroni is cooked to your consistency preference. Serve with parsley if u have, if not..just serve hot  :D

In American lingo, to sieve is to drain the water.

Btw here's another fast and easy recipe

Shepherd's Pie

1kg of potato - peeled and sliced
oil for frying
1kg of mincemeat
1 large cooking onion - diced
some garlic - chopped
1 can of spaghetti sauce
1 cup of mixed vegetables (peas yadayada)
some grated cheese
1 egg - beaten
2 tablespoon of milk

Fry the potato in very hot oil till golden brown and then mash them with salt to taste and milk. In another wok/pan, fry the diced onion and garlic till fragrant and then add the meat and cook till the meat is slightly tender (I usually add basil and thyme and pepper). Add the spaghetti sauce and vegetables and cook until the sauce is thick enough to form a bolognaise. Place the bolognaise into a baking dish and cover the top with the mashed potato. Coat the top of the potato with the egg and then sprinkle the grated cheese liberally.  Bake for 5mins in medium heat.

Total cooking and prep time : abt 20mins

Burgul is cracked wheat.  I think in N. america they are dyslexic and pronounce it bulgar - heh it is good that they actually have a term for it.  If you ever ate tabooleh, the tiny white pieces in your salad that look like couscous are burgul.  Also, for those of you lucky enough to have tasted kibbeh, the outer crust is made up from burgul.

By the way couscous and burgul are two entirely different things - but that might be too much information for some of you.

A sieve is the british equivalent of a collander/ strainer.  It is also a verb and means to drain.

The recipes so far look yummy.  In general, I think it is very cute that the brothers are trying to show off their culinary skills.  Other men should start taking notes, eh?

my vote goes to kathy's shrimp etofee (did i spell that right?) - i never heard of the thing until now and it just sounds interesting.

Rou-Roux is a french method to make a gravy

Usually a little flour is added to hot melted butter/or the oil left over after cooking your meat and then it is stirred well so that the flour mixes well and becomes a gravy

other methods to thicken gravy
1) a mix oc cold butter and flour
2) cornstarch

Whoa, looks like people having fun in the kitchen!

OK so I missed the deadline but after all that heavy duty cooking (especially siddiqui's! :P ) here's a quick snack/starter/light meal just for fun:

Yummy Omlette

*Whisk 3 eggs, so they're really frothy.  Add salt and pepper to the mix, and if you fancy it some spices. Turmeric and paprika work quite well, especially if youre eating in the morning, you might not like it too spicy.

*Chop up some fresh herbs, whatever you like, I use mostly dill, parsley, coriander.  Add to the whisked frothy eggs.

*Chop up some vegetables.
Any you like, but for vegetables that work particularly well in omlettes are potatoes and peppers (I'm talking about Bell Peppers, sometimes called capsicum outside the UK).
If you use potatoes, slice them up thin, like potato chips (or crisps as we call them in England).  That way they'll cook faster.
If you like onions, chop some up too.

*Stir fry veg in some olive oil.  When they're done (shouldnt take more than about 8 minutes), add the eggs mix.

*Let the bottom solidify in the pan, (should take about 1-2 minutes) but while the top is still got plenty of liquid on it, flip half of the omlette over, so it resembles a pancake folded in half.

Reason for this is so that when you bite into it, it will be moist and not dry and hard.

*Leave on heat for another 30 seconds or so.

*Remove from heat. Put on plate.  Toss some salad and cherry tomatoes on the side, and stick a piece of parsley on top for garnish.

Bon appetito.  ;-)

So the entree had to be submitted on time, be nutitious and delicious. To make things fair, guess we have to go with entree only.

Can't discount Se7en's late entree, because the Chix Parm part was submitted on time.

As a seasoned cook tho, I am going to disqualify, in my vote,  Azizah'a and Se7ens chix dishes because they list the chix to be cooked in 18 minutes. Breasts need to be cooked a minimum of 20 minutes, to bring the food safety temp up to 180/185 degrees. Advice... if you pound your breasts first...cooking time will qualify! However, I can't wait to make Azizah's and Seven's I do all the time!

I will also disqualify Siddiqui's because his dish, while delicious.... ok I hate salmon, only contains 1 food group. Also it is only nutritous if he uses a particular salmon. Have to admit I am very intrigued and may try his most of his posted dishes.

Jannah's salad immediately gets disqualified from my list... No large woman would ever consider a salad as an entree!

Which leaves, MF, Bhaloo and UmmIbby.

1. Umm Ibby gets my vote. Nutrious & Delicious & and Appealing to look at. Made this many times my self and there are so many variations.
2. Bhaloo- Nacho Taco... One of my favorites. May have made it into first place if there was taco meat and scallions.
3. MF- honorable mention, Just love grilled cheese especially with a hot bowl of tomato soup.

Just FYI
The chicken in my recipe cooks fast cause
1) The chicken is cubed to bite size pieces.
2) I think cause it is mixed with cheese the melting
bubbling cheese may help it cook faster.
If anyone tried mine, everything in there is cubed to bite size pieces.
3) I should also mention cause I can see know where it would make a big difference in cooking time. I only fill the casserole dish 1/2 to 2/3 the way.
So if you make this and fill the casserole dish pleaseeeee cook it longer.
The reason I don't make a filled one is we usually have salad or veggies and a desert. This is a low carb meal which 3 out of 4 of us are doing
the low carb thingy.

But Kathy is so right about safe cooking times.
I personally love when cheese bakes to a crispy top
so I cook it a little longer when making it at home.
When for a family function I cook it less.

I am actually cooking it tonight for our weekly 4 generations of women low-carb dinner.
My granddaughter, daughter-in-law, me and mum.

I think for more intimate dinners I am going to try making it, with the turkey ham wrapped around the 1/2 chix breast. And if they are highbrow kinda people...some stalks of braised asparagus in the wrap!

I was sadly disappointed with the entries in the contest. I honestly thought the women were going to put together some out of this world, 5 star dishes, that would make my mouth experience flavors I have never experienced before.  I know we have some real chefs out there, I don't know why you all held back.  I was looking forward to some exotic asian dishes.  Maybe some thai, desi, or chineese spices/flavors.

Jannah, we can have a monthly contest, maybe go with different themes, maybe make dishes with some special ingredients.

:oListen here... you chef wannabe.....:)

:-)We women are entirely capable and do know of exotic dishes. In reality most dishes take 45 minutes to prepare, an hour if you are using the oven. It was your time limit that stifled our creative entrees.

Also, I feel the most important reason I held back, was because it was a contest. Popular vote contest. I am surely not going to post a recipie that has several exotic spices, that few can get ahold of, much less never heard of.  Also I kept the cooking terms simple (for me) and still got a few questions.

;-)In fact I thought siddiqui's entrance was a very brave one, one he knew would not win the popular vote because of the unusual combinations, (I even IM'd him something to the fact of his uniqueness). However, I feel his dishes may be delicious.  Using his entree as an example. How can I vote for him when I can't even fathom capers and hummus mixed together in an egg?

Ha Ha.. when I posted my recipie I knew it was not going to win, because of the lack of spices and use of shrimp. However, it is a delicious one and went ahead!

I like the suggestion of picking a couple of ingredients and making a contest out of that!

I found all of the entrees interesting, too! Even tho I posted a tongue in cheek answer, quite a few are in my to do file! Great job everyone!

Kathy summed it up.  20 minutes is just too short of time, and for those of us living in other areas of the world, we cannot get many premade things that are available in the West to speed up the cooking time.
I don't think there is anything I make, outside of steak sandwiches, that takes 20 minutes or less.
Leave the time open and just ask for delicious entrees and there are many more members who will join, I believe.

Since I aim to please here is a recipe that is sure to heat things up heh heh
Its cheap and deeeeeelicious

Fried Rice Paradise
(aka what i practically eat everyday at uni)

2 plates of cooked rice (leftover ones are better)
1 cup of raw anchovies - soaked for 5mins
5 shallots/ 1 onion
3 garlic
10 red chillies or birds eye chillies are better
2 eggs
1 cup of shrimps/miced meat
mixed vegetables

pound the anchovies, chillies, shallots and garlic together. if u cant pound fast, then grind them using the millet or blender. i usually pound all these in 2 mins.

in medium hot oil, fry the pounded ingredients until fragrant, then add in the shrimp or minced meat. Fry until the shrimp and minced meat is nicely cooked. Add in the mixed vegetables and add salt to taste. When all is nicely blended, add in the rice and mix well. Break the eggs over the rice and mix again till the rice is nicely covered with the eggs and cooked.

Serve hot with cut cucumbers covered with tomato ketchup.

Tadaaaaaa

cheap nice and in just 10mins.
