I heard it was a good show, but am not watching it this season >:( Muslims encouraged by Fox '24' meeting Network asks affiliates nationwide to air CAIR PSA by OfficialWire NewsDesk WASHINGTON, D.C. -- (OfficialWire) -- 01/14/05 -- The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) today said that it is encouraged by a recent meeting in Los Angeles with representatives of the Fox television network to discuss Muslim concerns about the drama series "24." CAIR called for Wednesday's meeting to address the depiction of a "Muslim" family that is at the heart of a terror plot in the popular program. The Washington-based Islamic civil rights and advocacy group is concerned that the portrayal of the family as a terrorist "sleeper cell" may cast a shadow of suspicion over ordinary American Muslims and could increase Islamophobic stereotyping and bias. At the meeting, which included representatives from CAIR's Southern California office and from the Los Angeles-based Muslim Public Affairs Council, Fox officials said they would distribute a CAIR public service announcement (PSA) to network affiliates and ask that it be aired in proximity to "24." FOX also gave meeting participants assurances that the program will be balanced in its portrayal of Muslims. Network representatives said that they had already reviewed existing episodes and removed some aspects that could potentially be viewed as stereotypical. "We thank Fox for the opportunity to address the Muslim community's concerns and for the willingness of network officials to take those concerns seriously in an atmosphere of mutual respect and cooperation," said CAIR Communications Coordinator Rabiah Ahmed. She added that CAIR looks forward to working with Fox in the future. CAIR, America's largest Muslim advocacy group, has 30 offices and chapters nationwide and in Canada. Its mission is to enhance understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding. |

[slm] This is an extremely popular show, I watched the first couple of episodes, and the show has so much religious bigotry and stereotyping of Muslims its unbelievable. The story settles around this one Muslim family and how they have been chosen to carry out terrorist acts. The father, mother, and 13 or 14 year old son is a terrorist that are trying to kill and blow up American places. Its totally nuts. These people have no shame. Here was a response to the show in NY Times. Fox TV Accused of Stereotyping American Muslims January 13, 2005 By REUTERS Filed at 5:20 p.m. ET NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Fox television network said on Thursday it will provide its stations with TV spots that portray Muslims in a favorable way after it received complaints for featuring followers of Islam as terrorists on its hit television show ``24.'' On Monday, Fox premiered the fourth season of ``24.'' The drama featured an upper-middle class Muslim family operating as a sleeper terrorist cell. The Muslim mother poisons her son's non-Muslim girlfriend because it was feared the girl could jeopardize the terrorists' plan. A Fox spokesman said it would provide public service announcements sponsored by the Council on American-Islamic Relations to its affiliate stations. Local television executives can decide if and when to use the spots. The move was in response to the Islamic council's complaints about the show. ``What we are hoping to do is to try and mitigate the damages of the stereotypes because it can bring real-life consequences on American Muslims and their lives here,'' said Rabiah Ahmed, spokeswoman for the Islamic group. Citing a public opinion survey conducted by Cornell University last year, Ahmed said television influences viewers' perceptions of Muslims. ``There aren't any positive or even neutral portrayals of Muslims on TV; whenever Muslims or Arabs are portrayed it is always in a stereotypical way,'' she said. ``When average Americans don't have any personal interaction with Muslims, whether it be at work or at school, they base their perception of Islam and Muslims from what they see on TV,'' she added. ``We did bring that to Fox's attention.'' http://www.nytimes.com/reuters/arts/entertainment-media-muslims.html?ex=1106656129&ei=1&en=d2b7176d75a0c76b |

[slm] Unfortunately it's not just '24'. >:( I like to watch programs such as JAG and NCIS but unfortunately because they are based on the military they also stereostype muslims as the enemy. :-X Although on NCIS they did run a 2-parter at the end of the first season in which the suspected 'Islamic terrorist' actually turned out to be a Mossad double agent! |
