Peace in the World?

Hello.  I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to bring peace,
lasting peace, to the world.  It seems that things are in such a terrible cycle of violence.
What will it take to have a place where people love their neighbor, even if they don't
believe exactly the same way, and try to be a blessing instead of a bombing?

The main issue seems to be about deciding what principles will guide our world
society--religious or secular.  I personally am guided by principles in the Bible such as "thou
shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart"  "thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself"
"honour thy father and thy mother" "Thou shalt NOT kill" "do not steal"  "do not commit
adultery" and etc.  But, I know very well that in some places, my faith in the God of the
Bible would end up in violence towards me and my family, or an ultimatum--convert to the
state religion or die.

But to kill in the name of religion just continues the violent cycle.  I cannot believe
that God will allow such things to continue; although He is patient, He won't be forever.
He is also the judge of all the earth, and if people don't stop their violent ways, he
will judge righteously.

So, peace, where to start?  Or, actually, will it ever be in existence again?
Realistically, not idealistically speaking.

Sincerely,
Elle

Hi Elle,

I personally believe that the only way to bring about peace to the world again (if we ever had it) is to bring justice and education to it as well. How can we expect peace when people are being oppressed, killed, tortured, their rights being taken etc. This is the main reason for much of the violence in the world. Do you think the Palestinians would be doing what they were doing if they were being treated fairly and given all their rights as a people? The same for people in Iraq and other places. These current wars will only breed more war and hatred because the rest of the world only sees these Western countrys' neo-imperialistic values and hypocrisy.

The money we are spending on all these wars should be spent on educational programs that teach tolerance and educate the world on faiths, nationalities and races. No one has to agree with each other or even like one another, but with education comes better decisions, more FAIR unprejudiced decisions and the tolerance to treat each other as human beings.

There isn't a country in the world that says "convert to my religion or die". However there are countries that impose their socio-cultural values on others, even countries that strip people of their freedom of religion in the name of secularism.

There also isn't a religion in the world that says "kill in the name of our religion".

There is a real need for us all to get away from the pathetic CNNish media that continues to perpetuate the idea that the rest of the world is crazy and violent and kills in the name of their religion, while 'we' are civilized and are trying to bring 'freedom' to the rest of the world. What a joke...let's at least get to the BBC level where we acknowledge who started the bombing and killing in the name of their own 'religion' and agenda.

So... belief in God, in justice, treat others as u would want to be treated, love thy neighbor, honor the elderly, do not kill innocents... universal religious principals... but it seems that most Western countries aren't even close to that level. So peace?  In the end, Peace will only come when when people do things that contribute to peace instead of the opposite.

Equality and justice.

Treating all citizens of this planet as equal (eg a non-American person harmed is as bad as an American person harmed) and giving them their fair share of all the bounties of this world.

Justice. So no one feels the need to over-ride the law enforcers to gain their own justice or revenge etc.
