[slm] can someone please remind me why we do not shake hands with the opposite gender please? I know we don't do this but i just could not remeber the Haadith / Quran verse to support my actions the other day. There is a previous thread which i have failed to find. If someone knows what i am talkig about please post a link to that thread. Jazak Allah :-) |

[slm] It just happened to be one of the questions answered at Islam Q&A today. here is a cut a paste of the hadith they sited: It is haraam for a man to touch the hand of a girl who is not his mahram, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “For one of you to be stabbed in the head with an iron needle is better for him than for him to touch a woman who is not permissible for him.” Narrated by al-Tabaraani from the hadeeth of Ma’qil ibn Yasaar (may Allaah have mercy on him); classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami’, 5045. Check this out, it has some interesting views: http://www.islamonline.net/fatwa/english/FatwaDisplay.asp?hFatwaID=87970 |

I have any interesting moment: It happened at first day or work. Alhumdulillah 90% of the people there are guys, so no big deal, but for the few women there I was like what do I do. Haha. So my boss was introducing me to everyone and I was like hey..., and keeping my hands in my pocket just in case . Well dun dun dun, there was a lady and she was with two other guys. Boss started to introduce me, and I was like hey, then the guys pulled out their hand to shake and I was like no prob, and the next guy I did, and then the lady I just said hey, she didnt pull her hand out so that was good. Then the next group of people come. So I am like hi, and everything. There was one guy and one lady. So the guy imediatley jumped up and said hi shoke my hand and then the lady who was there pulled her hand out and then I said "Sorry due to relgious preferences, I cant shake hands with opposite gender." And she turned ALL RED. I was like sorry and she was turing more red. I was like man... Then boss started to laugh and then everyone there laughed, and I was like what... Hahah. Why they were laughing I have no idea. |

They laughed because they were slightly embarassed about her obvious discomfort, and theirs, and laughing eases tension. You will see it in emergency rooms after something terrible has happened. People have a hard time letting true emotions show, and nervous tension at times erupts in laughter. They were not dissing you or her. Hope this helps :-) Laila |
