First, since this board says discussion on varies Islamic topics I believe I have this in the right place. Also I need to ask Jannah up from, if this is a break away subject of a banned subject, please forgive me and feel free to delete it. One thing has me wondering, with the studying I have been doing The word Jihad means Effort or Struggle. And we all know there are many types of struggles in this world. The word Irhab is the word for terriorism. Heres my question, with all the fusses and encouragements about Hijab's and other Muslims issues, women not being able to wear hijabs, and other situations. Ware we not making a big fuss with the media over this word that seems to reflect badly on Islam in media and with people who don't know any better. To the average person not knowing, it seems like the word is misused, there by reflecting hatred, fear, war, killings. |

I agree with you. Although the media only report, whether something is accurate or not, I do think they have a duty not to misconstrue the meanings of words, if they don't understand the word themselves, then don't use it. Last year I responded to an article in the Sydney Morning Herald about a mad man who took over a flight from Melbourne to Hobart. The specifically mentioned that he wasn't an "Islamic terrorist". So off I went and sent my opinion about their abuse of the use of "Islamic terrorist". I told them they had no right to use this phrase when they never mention "christian rapist" and/or "christian murderer" or "christian robber" when they report news about someone (other than a muslim) commiting these acts and that this article was discriminatory. The paper wrote back to me and apologised and said they would make a further effort in future. |

[slm] Angelic, great point, it makes me so mad when I see these idiot news reporters here in the US doing that. Like last week when that non-Muslim, mexican guy tried to do suicide and left his truck on the tracks and derailed the train and killed 11 people. The news media came out and said, its not a terrorist attack. And there are no al-qaida links. I'm sick and tired of these rreligous bigots, these people are committing terrorist acts with their journalism (if that's what it can even be called). On a canadian tv news show, something similiar happened, and one Muslim wrote back to the station. The TV station apologized, and said that we normally don't do that, and that it was an outside journalist that said that, and that when it happened they quickly tried to fade away. They said they would try to be more sensitive and fair. It was refreshing to read that. |

[slm] yes i agree. but u know what? what makes me even more mad are the following two things. the first is the islamic extremists who actually do some bad things which are totally against Islam. This causes the media t oexxagerate and add their masala to the stuff. And then they don't even try to make sure what they are saying is tight, etc. and they r the the ones who dont know wany better who beleive ANYTHING the media will say. |
