Hijaab

I just read this article and thought I'd share it with u all sisters.

I hope we do not fall into any of the categories below and our Hijaab is in accordance with Islam..ameen  :-)

The author of this article "Observations on Hijab" is unknown. Funny as it is, there are a number of lessons to be learnt...

It has been my personal observation that some Muslim girls and women do not realise the significance of hijab. Hijab is Arabic for protection and cover. Some people put a lot of effort into their hijab, yet it serves no purpose. I am referring to the pointless hijab that some girls wear.

The first pointless hijab is referred to as the headband hijab. It is a band of fabric approximately 4 inches wide. It covers the back of the head and allows all the hair to be exposed. It doesn't serve much in terms of modesty, but at least it comes in handy in case of an unexpected tennis match!

The second pointless hijab is the dupatta, also known as the Saran wrap hijab. It covers all the hair, but it is totally transparent. Again it doesn't serve much in terms of modesty, but it keeps the hair nice and fresh!

The third type of hijab is known as the Micky Mouse Hijab. It is when a girl wears a black scarf and tucks it behind her ear, so that her ears stick out!

We now move on to  my favourites - the yo-yo hijabs:
The first yo-yo hijab is the scarf that keeps falling down and needs to be constantly pulled back up.... up, down, up, down, just like a  yo-yo!

The second yo-yo hijab is also referred to as the convertibe hijab. This type of hijab is predominant at any type of social event, i.e. an Aqeeqah, Bismillah party, Ameen party, wedding, etc. This is when an Imam or Qari comes up to the microphone and starts to recite Qur'an. At this point, all the convertible hijabs come up... until he says "SadaqAllahu Atheem." I'm not sure, but apparently in some cultures that translates to "OK sisters, you may take off your scarves."

I'm sure this may seem odd, but what's even funnier is when people do not anticipate the recitation of Qur'an at a social event, and are forced to be creative and use accessories such as a purse to cover one's hair. I was surprized to see a woman hold her purse over her head as "hijab"... as if the multitudes of men surrounding her are not a good enough reason to wear hijab, but some guy reciting du'a compels her to hold a  purse over her head. Her friends were more creative... one friend used her dinner napkin. I was also laughing when i saw the communal hijab- two or more girls dropped under one dinner napkin during the recitation of Qur'an. Her other friend was still more creative. She used her coffee saucer on the back of her head. I  wasn't sure of it was hijab or Yamaka. I didn't know if she was a Muslim or a Jew. I felt like going up to her and saying "Shalom alaikum, sister."

And, people should remember that hijab is not just a protection from guys, but from a girls' nafs (ego) as well. It should prevent girls from having to spend hours in front of the mirror doing her hair. But, unfortunately, you see girls in front of the mirror for hours doing their hijab as they would do their hair, with all sorts of elaborate braids and the like. I wanted to go up to a sister and say "Is your hijab naturally curly?" I also felt compelled to go up to another girl and say "Pardon me, but is your hijab naturally that colour, or did you dye it"?

Well the point is that some people make an effort to wear hijab, but it is futile, because it is not fulfilling its purpose. It's like using an umbrella with holes in it. Hijab is used for protection from guys as well as from the girl herself, and should not be used as an accessory or for beautifying one's self

[slm] ;D Saffiyah. How true! I can honestly say that this article covers the various hijabs I have seen in existence..loooool ::) Maybe the writer could add one more'ramadhan only hijab' comes out of the closet for this one holy month and goes right back in after the month is over. Astaghfiirullah! May Allah(SWT) enable any such above sisters to realize the true meaning of hijab and cover properly. Jazakalah, sis for the article, I couldn't help but laugh in some instances,I know it's a serious matter and a problem we have with us sisters but the writers approach to it and observations are  dead on! Sis Ummnajmah.

Ps: Any other sister who has spotted some other hijabs that need to be added to the category?

Not to be preachy, but Sr.'s who begin to observe hijaab and are new to it, may use any of the above methods till they gain courage to adopt it fully. Observing Hijaab is something to be encouraged not mocked.

HILARIOUS!!!!  A coffee cup?  Now you know that she wasn't going through a hijab trial.  There are just some things us sisters know.  My first time in wearing a hijab, I was a little hesitant to cover all the way because I didn't know how ppl would react so I tried little by little to cover fully.  First I tied it behind my neck, just showing my earrings and neck.  Mind you that it took me only 3 weeks to realize that the only person bothered by this was me.

I never tried a cup or a napkin or a convertable or a ramadan...you know these girls knew what they were doing....or did they?  LOL.

Either you wear it properly or you don't wear it at all.  It's just pointless and defeats the whole purpose of the hijab.

Now there are the community hijabs...where you only wear it in the community or the masjid hijab wear it's only worn inside the masjid.

OH YEAH...my favorite....the hijab is observed, but the clothing is all wrong...it's tight fitting or transparent or there is obvious cleavage because the shirt or top is so low cut.  I DON"T GET IT!!!!

You won't believe this but i have seen sisters use purses, napkins etc....always wondered what they were doing!! Some even put their scarves on when they hear the adhaan on tv....how hilarious!!
heheheheh

And the community hijaab...so true, I've noticed the hijaab is in fashion in some communties and they only wear it because it is the 'in thing'.

Another point - I agree with the clothing being wrong in some cases. I once saw a sister wearing a hijab...chest covered etc. but wearing t-shirt and tight trousers underneath. She was also wearing make up....defeats the whole object.

I guess these sisters need to be educated that the 'awrah' of a woman is not just her 'hair' but the whole body.

I have a similar funny story.  I went to a meeting at a ladies house, there was probably 8 non-hijabies and 3 of us that wore it full time.

There was a man in the house so we didn't take our scarves off, but they said, come on take them off he won't enter the room.  So after contemplating (he is a much older man, in his late sixties) we decided to take them off.

Meeting progresses, we open with a dua, all the non hijabies threw something over their head while the dua was being recited, and us hijabies just listed to the dua.  I found that very strange.

We made a joke and said, we take them off so you can put them on :P

[slm] This topic, and I think this article was discussed in

http://ww.hadeer.com
a long time ago. A young couple insisted the attractive designs of hijaab constituted "social marketing" of Islam.

and the yo-yo comment made a woman very angry, for her mother had a problem when she first put the hijaab on, and this article seemed to make fun of her ordeal.

anyway, it is true that the purpose of Hijaab should be to conceal, and to avert gazes, but if the hijaabs are doing the opposite, the purpose is being defeated.

A young american preacher on IoL said he was surprised to see muslim women with Hijaab but with the rest of the clothing very revealing.

dawah: what is true Islam, to both men and women, is the answer. But men will have to take their role seriously. Avert gaze, and loook for spouses who are well into the deen, not into fashion.
