hmm the only one that springs to mind is the hadith that states no nation will be successful that is ruled by a woman!
Not necessarily the best dawah  :-/

*ahem*... Just so that noone thinks Islam condemns all nations with women leaders...

The hadith that Eleanor mentioned is not a hadith to be generalised in all situations. An interpretation of the hadith stated that Ar-Rasul  [saw] commented on a specific kingdom, of which the woman in question was incompetent.

There are, however, countless and fine examples of women leaders in our history. Even in the Qur'an, Balkis, the Queen of Saba' (Sheba) is another fine and noble example, mashaAllah.

Gotta scoot!

wasn't there that hadith (?) that leadership should not be asked for, it should be obvious.

or how about...when there's more than 2 people, the group should pick a leader...

or how about...talking about the concept of the imam...and using congregation as a metaphor or something..

wasalaam.

- "Sayyidul-qawm khaadimuhum"
The leader of a people is their servant.

(I don't know what the source is though).

- The hadith that starts off "Every one of you is a shepherd and will be asked about his flock (i.e. responsibilities)..."

This is part of what I've compiled in case anyone needs it

The quote i mentioned was my favorite:
"Acquire knowledge, it enables its professor to distinguish right from wrong; it lights the way to heaven. It is our friend in the desert, our company in solitude and companion when friendless. It guides us to happiness, it sustains us in misery, it is an ornament amongst friends and an armor against enemies." Prophet Mohammed

I categorized these as qualities of a leader, using parts of?someones? writings :

Righteousness
Indeed righteousness illuminates the heart, radiates the face, strengthens the body, increases provision, and produces a love in the hearts of the creation for that person.  Hadith Ibn Abbaas

Responsibility
Each one of you is a Guardian and responsible for those of whom he is in charge. The Ruler is a Guardian and thus responsible for his subjects. A man is the Guardian of his family and is responsible for those under his care. In like manners, each one of you is a guardian and is responsible for what he is entrusted with.  Hadith Umar

Calmness
The strong man is not the one who overcomes others by his strength, but the one who, though angry, controls himself. Bukhari

Diplomacy
"Do you know what is better than charity and fasting and prayer? It is keeping peace and good relations between people, as quarrels and bad feelings destroy mankind." (Muslim & Bukhari)

Dependability
Those who faithfully observe their trusts and their promises...are the heirs of Paradise; they shall abide in it forever. Qur'an 23:8

Fairness
We gave sent our messengers (prophets) with explanations and sent the scriptures and the scales of justice down with them, so that men may conduct themselves with fairness.  Qur’an 57:25

Genuineness
A person is perfect in his religion when he leaves alone that which does not concern him.  Hadith Tirmidhi

Honesty
You who believe, heed God and stand by those who are truthful. Qur'an 9:119

There are three signs of a hypocrite: when he speaks, he lies; when he makes a promise, he does not keep it; when he is trusted, he betrays.  Hadith Abu Huraira

Versatility
When you see a person seeking an object earnestly, assist him to attain his ends. And never ask for a reward except that given by Allah. Hadith of Ash-Shifa

Ability
Let there become of you a nation that shall call for righteousness, enjoin justice and forbid evil. Such men will surely triumph. Qur'an 3:104

Initiative
Every magnificent and important project not begun with the praise of God, remains defective. Hadith Abu Dawud

Judgment
Whenever you judge between people, you should do so with fairness. Qur’an 4:58

Nobility
O mankind! We created you from a single (pair) of a male and a female and made you into nations and tribes that ye may know each other (not that ye may despise each other). Verily the most honored of you in the sight of Allah is (he who is) the most righteous of you. And Allah has full
knowledge and is well acquainted (with all things) Qur'an 49:13

Teamwork
And hold fast all together by the rope which God (stretches out for you) and be not divided among yourselves; and remember with gratitude God's favor on you; for ye were enemies and He joined your hearts in love so that by His grace ye became brethren; and ye were on the brink of
the pit of fire and He saved you from it. Thus doth Allah make his signs clear to you: that ye may be guided.  Qur’an 3:103

Zeal
When three people set out on a journey, they should appoint one of them as a leader. Hadith Abu Dawud

Gentle Speaking
Verily, the harshest of all voices is the voice (braying) of the ass. Qur’an 31:19

Teaching Priorities
‘Be faithful slaves to your Lord, patient and learned.’  ‘And it is said that the good instructor is the one who starts teaching people simple matters of knowledge before more difficult ones.’ Hadith Ibn Abbas

Search of Knowledge
"A person who goes in search of knowledge, he is in the path of God and he remains so till he returns." Hadith Tirmizi

Whoever follows a path to seek knowledge, God will make easy for him the path to Paradise.  Prophet Muhammad

"Who are the learned? Those who practice what they know." (Bukhari)

Whoever wants to be a leader should educate himself before educating others. Before preaching to others he should first practice himself. Whoever educates himself and improves his own morals is superior to the man who tries to teach and train others.  Ali

We are taught the qualities for leadership are:
1. Knowledge and hikmah (wisdom, insight)
2.  Taqwa( to be in the good pleasures of Allah and to stay away from those things that would
         displease Allah)
3.  Adl (justice) and rahmah (compassion)
4. Courage and bravery
5. Shura (mutual consultation)
6.  Decisiveness and being resolute
7.  Eloquence
8.  Spirit of self-sacrifice
9.  Sabr (patience).

Jazaki Allahu kheyran for compiling this Kathy because i'm also looking for info. on leadership from an islamic perspective.

I would add one more to the qualities:

10. Baseerah or Vision/Far Sightedness : Imho this is the different between a mere manager and a leader.

One ayah that comes to mind is :

"Is then one who walks headlong, with his face grovelling, better guided,- or one who walks evenly on a Straight Way?"  Qur'an (67:22)

I find it particularly interesting because on one level it deals with the difference between misguidance and guidance, but on another it talks about the ability to transcend one's immediate situation to the bigger picture. Therefore walking upright and in a straight path you can see as far as the eye can capture versus one who is walking facing down unable to see beyond his feet.

Just my 2 cents. Wallahu A'lam.

al-itqan = If you do something, then you do it well. Not in a perfectionist negative sense, but it has the implication of seriousness, hardwork, and aim to the ideal.

There are hadeeth on this and many examples (for ex. khadija ra chose the prophet  [saw] for marriage because of his itqan in trade he did for her) I have many ex. if you want them tell me.

al-Jaddiya = Seriousness
many ahadeeth on not wasting time and life in just having fun and laughing, importance of having goals.

al-ikhalas = sincerity

al-eejabiya = positive thinking
hadeeth: tafa'aloo bilkhayr fa tajidooh
expect good, and you will find it

thabat = steadfastness for Truth

al-amr bilma3roof wal-nahiy 3an al-monkar = to enjoin what is good and forbid what is evil
