NBC's Kevin Tibbles Reports
World's smallest baby goes home

She was born weighing less than a can of soda, but the little girl believed to be the smallest premature baby ever to survive, is finally home, sweet home.

It's a long-awaited homecoming. Little Rumaisa Rahman, known everywhere as the "world's tiniest baby", weighed just 8.6 ounces at birth, about the size of a cell phone.

Now five months old, she's picking up steam, gaining a half ounce a day at Chicago's Loyola University Medical Center, checking out on Tuesday at a whopping 5 pounds, 8 ounces.

"Bye, Dr. Morascus."

"You take care."

She's finally able to join her twin sister Hiba, 8 pounds, 8 ounces, at home.

The twins' father, Mohammed Abdul Rahman, says, "We were waiting for this day to come, you know. It's a great feeling for us."

Mom and dad recently immigrated to the United States from India. The babies were born by C-section after their mother developed Preeclampsia, a dangerous form of high blood pressure, during her 25th week of pregnancy.

Despite her early entry into the world, doctors say Rumaisa's prognosis is excellent and they expect her to have normal physical and mental development.

A big day for "the world's smallest baby", a medical miracle now larger than life.
