Colds and imune system

I was wondering if anyone had any herbal suggestions
in regards to colds and rebuilding the imune system that
I can research and try.

I am on the 8th or 9th day of my 3rd cold in 8 weeks.
I don't think it is the same cold as the characteristics are
a little different and there seems to be a 100% recovery inbetween.
Needless to say I am very tired
and also tired and frustrated at being tired.
Things I am doing so far are:
Drinking lots and lots of fluids
Multi vits
Extra Vit C
Lots of sleep and rest (But I make myself go outside in the fresh air daily)
Echinacea and zinc from the minute I feel it coming on.
However I stop when I am well, maybe I should continue
this for a week after.
I am not running a fever.

So any suggestions would be much appreciated. I've been doing
web searches on this also.
Maybe since the last year was what I would call extreamly and
constantly stressful my imune system is on overload as I
hear stress can bring things on.

What do you do when you have colds?
What herbs seem to work for you?
Thank you

azizah, sorry to hear about that.
Herez something that usually helps me a bit (got it from my mom):

On a teaspoon full of honey, put lots of pepper. Mix it thoroughly and eat it. Do this atleast twice a day. It doesn't taste that good, but it does miracles for common colds(coughs, sore throats, etc).
I don't know if it will work since you have a long-term cold. Try it anyway.

The same thing, as you mentioned, happened to my mom. And in the end, the only thing that worked for her was strong dose anti-biotics. :-[

Hope you get better soon, Inshallah! May Allah(swt) give you recovery soon.

you seem to be over stressed a lot these days.  why not take stress-ease?  this is a product by jamison (maybe it is only in canada?)  but basically it is a vitamin b complex.  as for echinacea, continue taking them every day.  it only has long term effects on boosting the immune system.  we get the capsule stuff not the tea.  personally, what works well for me is chamomile tea with honey.  that is the best stuff for colds for me.

a good night sleep is also an immune system booster.

avoid cold drinks.  take chicken soup , it is good for you.

a traditional remedy in middle eastern culture is taking a table spoon of black seed oil mixed with a table spoon of organic honey.  if you want black seed oil, IM me and i can send you some by mail.

i think in the indian culture they use turmeric for common colds.  can anyone clarify how it is used (tea or just dry??)

i hope you feel better soon.

wassalam

[slm] i guess its something in the air these days, my two little boys are down with cold and fever as well...one of my aunts just told me to make chicken soup, with one entire garlic head and 2 small onions, with some salt and blackpepper for taste, and drink it twice a day for a few days...she says it works wonders, and i know for fact chicken soup is really good when you are feeling weak and tired, inshallah you and my boys will be back to their old selves soon. :-*

I like using the blackseed ground. I season my meats with it, put it on cooked veggies, in salad, and soups. I even put a little in some vanilla pear yoghurt- made it much better!! ;D

Thank you all so much for your suggestions.
Mona, after I read your post I was quite intriged
by the black seed oil and did a web search on it.
I am going to order some tomorrow.

Also going to look into
stress-ease.

Nida I don't think I can stomach the pepper thingy
However I am curious are you talking black pepper
or the red cheyne (I know that is spelled wrong) pepper?

It is the 9th day and I an beginning to
feel much much better.
Thank you all for your suggestions
PS I made homemade chicken soup with veggies and
dumplings last night it was yummy if I do say so myself.

I boiled 4 cups water and added 4 chicken bullion cubes
lots of fresh garlic, onions, celery
cubed chicken breast
yellow squash, carrots and a potatoe
Added the dumplings
Is a new made up recipie

I know this is a bit late, but you should have a look into essential oils. For instance, tea tree is very powerful against a wide range of bacteria, viruses and fungi. Also, try lavender (suitable for kids too) or ravensara, which is extremely affective against the flu virus. You can vaporise a few drops of either of these oils in a diffuser (fill the bowl with water, light the candle and add about 2-3 drops for a small room, up to 7 for a larger room) and leave to vaporise whenever the threat of illness is about. Combining the oils is even more effective. Just remember to vary the oils after a week or two. Never take them internally, and never apply neat to the skin (except for 1 drop of tea tree or lavender - v good for spots!).

They also are immune stimulants, so can increase your body's ability to fight infection.

Also try filling a (new) plant spray with water, about 600 mls add 15 drops total of thyme (make sure its the linalol chemotype), lavender or eucaplytus (or a combination of the three or any oil i mentioned above). Shake VERY well, then use it to spray your room 2 or 3 times a day. Again, be sure to vary the oils used if youre gonna do this for more than a few days, in case the oils build up residues in your body. You can also add a few drops to a bowl of hot water, and use this to disinfect doorknobs, worksurfaces, etc.

You can also try adding 3 drops of tea tree, lavender or eucalyptus (either singly, or in a blend) in 5-10mls of good quality vegetable oil and massaging this over yourself, or get your spouse to massage it over your back.

Try massaging 1 drop of neat lavender oil to your throat if you have a tickly cough/sore throat, I find this very effective to soothe the pain, and of course, the customary bowl of steaming water and a towel is good for clearing up infections. cypress, marjoram, tea tree and lavender are good for this, as well as giving you a good complexion (dont use this method if asthmatic though)!

If stressed, again the oils have a lot to offer, if youre married get your partner to give
you regular foot or back massages with a relaxing oil, such as rosewood, clary sage or grapefruit (v good antidepressant), chamomile or neroli. or just pamper yourself with
an aromatherapy bath or footbath.
Anywaaaaaaaaaay, sorry to be so long-winded. These are jsut some of the ways
I've used aromatherapy to help myself, so hope it'll be useful to you as well :)

I recommend a book called aromatherapy an a-z by patricia davis, for more info.

One more warning, dont use any essential oil in the presence of pet birds, cos theyre toxic to birds and will kill them. Also be careful around kids. Again, I recomment reading up on it, and if you like i can post the url of a forum which has a quallified aromatherapist who can make better sugestions than I can!
