Al-Ghazali
The Alchemist of Happiness
A Film by Ovidio Salazar

Exploring the life and impact of the greatest spiritual and legal philosopher in Islamic history, this film examines Ghazali's existential crisis of faith that arose from his rejection of religious fanaticism, and reveals profound parallels with our own times. Ghazali became known as the Proof of Islam and his path of love and spiritual excellence overcame the pitfalls of the organised
religion of his day. His path was largely abandoned by early 20th century Muslim reformers for the more strident and less tolerant school of IbnTaymiyya. This film argues that Ghazali's Islam is the antidote for today's terror.

as salaamu alaykum wa rahmatullah,

looks very interesting and cool, but why the hate for Ibn Taymiyyah?  As the Arabs say 'even the noble steed stumbles'; and there is no one except Rasulullah [saw] who is free from error or mistakes.

Unfortunately there is a wide rift amongst Muslims caused by misunderstanding of Ibn Tammiyya and tasawwuf.

Ibn Tammiyya's prolific student Ibn Qayyim wrote a commentary on a famous book by al-Muhasibi on tasawwuf.

The famous or notorious debates between ibn Tammiya and the egpytian scholars (esp the Maliki jurists) rested on some thorny aqida details, that should not be discussed by non-scholars. (or atleast that is my opinion)

Half of the solution lies in the tasawwuf oriented Muslims holding fast to al-Ghazali's advice that if you are not a scholar don't debate scholarly works and positions.

The other half lies on followers of ibn Tammiya accepting his final volume of fatawa that deal with tasawwuf and accepting that atleast the tasawwuf espoused by al-Muhasibi and expounded upon by ibn Qayyim is correct.
