slm,
What is the status of hypnosis in Islam? Is it allowed?
I am curious because we had this lady come in to our psychology class, and she did "relaxation" hypnosis(demo) to a few ppl in class.

Its interesting because it helps cure a lot of things like stress, phobias, etc.
Would someone please expand more on this?

Hmm, that's interesting.  Can you share with the rest of us what exactly she did in class?  Why do you think it would be forbidden in Islam?

Ok. . . here is what she did:
You are sitting in a comfy chair and you close your eyes.
She starts talking really really fast and she touches the middle of your forehead. She keeps talking about calm things- - like deep blue ocean, cool breeze, etc.
And then she makes a suggestion (and your permission is asked before she does this). So for example, one suggestion can be like this:
Ok. . so I am going to make a suggestion to you. Everytime you see me touch my ear, you are going to go back to sleep. Touching my ear is like a red signal to you.
[She did this to a girl. After the session was finished, everytime the girl saw the lady touch her ear, she just dropped her head involuntarily and went to sleep}<< kinda weird!
And the session goes on and on. She says like a lot of other things depending on the purpose.
She kept repeating that you are going deeper and deeper into the subconcious.

So. . .my question is. . I was wondering if it is allowed since you are in your *subconcious* state of mind. You don't have a sense of whats going on.

I dunno maybe its just me paranoid ::)
Sorry if this doesn't make sense.

Question

If you have some spare time, then it would be much appreciated if you could consider my question. My question was that what view does Islam have on Hypnosis? Muslims do not believe in reincarnation. However, there have been many cases where people have been hypnotised and have described their previous life. Thanks.

Answer
Dr. Muzammil Siddiqi

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

Dear questioner, we would like to thank you for the great confidence you place in us, and we implore Allah Almighty to help us serve His cause and render our work for His Sake.

Answering the question in point, Dr. Muzammil H. Siddiqi, former President of the Islamic Society of North America, states:

"Hypnosis is defined as “altered state of consciousness and heightened responsiveness to suggestions.” In a normal person it is induced by a variety of methods and has been used occasionally in medical and psychiatric treatment. It, probably, has some medical and psychiatric benefits and for this purpose it can be permitted in Islam. But hypnosis is not a definite source of knowledge. The scholars on this subject point out that hypnosis lends itself to misinterpretation. It is said, “The revival through hypnosis of early, forgotten memories may be fused with fantasies. Research into hypnotically induced memories in recent years has in fact stressed their uncertain reliability. For this reason a number of state court systems in the US have placed increasing constraints on the use of evidence hypnotically obtained from witnesses…”

The doctrines and beliefs in Islam are not taken from hypnotic experiences, they are taken from the Divine Revelations that came to the most trustworthy Messenger of Allah. According to the Qur’an and Sunnah there is no “reincarnation” (tanasukh al-arwah) but there will be indeed “resurrection” (ba`th)."

Allah Almighty knows best.
