Names revisited

[slm] everyone,

I haven't been posting much lately but I am still here lurking around and reading through most threads.
I know we have discussed this time and time again but it is time to do a new baby name thread :)
I tried searching for the old threads and came up empty handed. I even went to the old board and looked for some threads there (and got seriously distracted reading through all our old stuff) but also found nothing.

So, names.
We don't know what gender the baby is. All we know is that I only have around 4 weeks left to go and nothing has been really decided yet.
Alhamdulillah it has gone really well so far and all signs are that the baby is big and healthy and thriving. I'm getting a bit nervous about the actual birth but insha Allah it will be ok in the end.

My priorities for a name are that it is easy to say, easy to spell and more or less recognised in the english speaking world. I don't want to have to explain the name every time someone asks me it.
My husband would like a name with a significant/beautiful meaning or a name after a great role model in islamic history.

At this stage I would like to get a short list together and then decide when the baby is born which name "fits" it best.

So if you could just list your favourite boy and girl names, like in previous threads then that would be great.

PS I know this thread is going to be of interest not just to me  ;)

[slm] The best names are:

1. Abdullah - slave of Allah

2. Abdur Rahman - slave of Rahman

3. Mohammad Ahmad

4. Khalid :)

When I was a boy, I was walking in my neighborhood, when a man stopped me. Then asked me if I was the son of (my father's name). I was surprised because I hadn't ever seen the gentleman ever before this. I said yes. Then he asked me if my paternal grandfather was named such, and then the name of my maternal grandfather. He continued with many names of my uncles and cousins and brothers, and naturally I was very astonished.

Then he asked me my name.

I told him "K..."

He said "No. You are a Muslim, and Muslims have either Mohammed before their names, or Ahmed after it. Now tell me what your name is."

I didn't need to think at all. I said: "Mohammad K.. Ahmad".

Sister Eleanor!  Congratualtions!  Alhamdolillah, we've all been waiting on the board for this news for several years.  May Allah grant you and your husband a healthy and pious child, Ameen, Ameen, Ameen.

Ok, names.  Off the top of my head -

Boy : Idris.  Prophet mentioned in the Quran, thought to be Enoch of the Bible.
Girl : Abeer.  One of may favorite girls names.  Can't remember exactly what it means, but it has a nice meaning.

[slm] Eleanor,

Perfect timing, because my sister-in-law is 2 months away and we're in the process of bouncing off ideas as well.  Some of the ones I liked are listed below, maybe this will help you.  Insh'Allah I pray the baby will be kind and obedient and a rightous muslim, Ameen.

*GIRLS*
Lamees  -  Soft to the touch
Hana'  -  Happiness/Bliss
Haniya  -  Pleased; Happy
Aneesa  -  Friendly; of good company

*BOYS*
Abdul Haleem  -  Servant of the Mild, Patient
Ali  -  Excellent, Noble
Nabil  -  Noble, generous
Harris  -  Don't know the meaning but I know it can be said in both English and Arabic.    :P

And yes, to follow up from what timbaktu said, it is recommended to have "Mohammed" somewhere in a boy's name.

I went through exactly what you are going through. These were our final choices.

When naming the girl puppet I polled many non Muslims. The winners were Ameenah and Amirah.

[slm]Everyone.Sis Eleanor, inshallah hoping that you are doing fine and may Allah(SWT) make things easier for you as you get ready for the little one.I must say though if you plan on looking for a muslim name for the baby that will be easily recognized in the english world, you may have very limited choices and very little luck.Although my real name is not common here in the Us, at first people are like hmmm...that's different, then they ask how to pronounce it and pretty soon, it becomes easy for them. A lot of people have asked me the origin of my name, and why I was named that way or if my name is really complete in it's spelling. But more than enough have told me, they really like it and like to call me just coz they think its pretty. So please give your child a beautiful islamic name, that they will love and dont worry too much about anything else.I do agree though, make it easy for the people to pronounce, but just don't limit your choices there are truly many beautiful islamic names.Ummnajmah. :-)

I am not so worried about other people being able to pronounce the name, as I am for my son/daughter having to spell/repeat their name *every time* someone asks it...

I am sure we will find something suitable insha Allah.

The suggestions so far have been very nice and helpful, thanks.

[slm] Eleanor,

I know where you're coming from with names, both my husband and I are converts living in Canada, and have thought about some of the very same issues.

For boys, in addition to some of the above names how about David and Noah?  (personally I wouldn't have a problem using the English version of spelling/pronunciation, in my view it's still referring to the same prophets, although I can see where others might have different opinions.)

For a girl, Maryam (or Mariam) and Aisha (or Ayesha)

hope

Well I think we have decided on a girl's name and I have pretty much decided on a boy's name - just have to twist my husband's arm a bit more  ;)

Thanks to all for your input.
