EVENT DESCRIPTION

The Nawawi Foundation is happy to announce its third annual weekend intensive,
"Connecting to God in Today's World," with Shaykh Hamza Yusuf Hanson and Dr.
Umar Faruq Abd-Allah as the principal speakers. "Connecting to God in Today's
World" will examine what is required to develop a living bond with God and
sincere attachment to spiritual values in the context of modernity, with special
focus on Muslim American life.

The Nawawi Foundation hopes to broach the following questions in its third
annual intensive: Our Islamic tradition is filled with diverse and sophisticated
forms of spirituality. Are they meaningful to us today? Do they require
modification? How do we distinguish between genuine spirituality and its false
permutations? How do we protect ourselves from spiritual dead ends?
As Muslim Americans, we must be actively engaged in the creation of a sound
indigenous Islamic culture that imparts a sound sense of identity. Can we
cultivate a sound sense of Islamic spirituality without a unified sense of the
Muslim American self? How do we foster a living spirituality in the climate of
questioning intrinsic to modern thought and among the many doubts, misgivings,
and negative self-images that often confront Muslims today?
These are among the questions that the Nawawi Foundation hopes to broach in its
third annual intensive. We invite you to join in the dialogue, and we hope that
we will be able to join us in finding answers that are of lasting benefit to us
all.
