Acceptance or Rejection by loved ones?

In discussing my interest in learning about Islam and the muslim people I have run into a great deal of resistance and dismay from my friends and family. Even those I thought were more open minded have suprised me except for a couple of friends.  This has me wondering about those of you here who have converted or who live in non-Islamic countries such as the US.  Were your family and friends supportive, apathetic or even angry at your calling to convert to Islam?  How did you and do you continue to deal with those emotions and feelings of those close to you?  How difficult is it to be muslim in the US?  I know there is much prejudice, issues with food and its preparation, work and prayers(hurray for Dell and its decision!) but I also imagine that muslims may have difficulty in connecting with people who understand the issues you face daily.  Obviously Allah gives you all strength but what else helps you to live proudly as muslims here.  I really hope I have said this right and asked proper questions.  Thank you.

My Mother was upset- but my "reversion" came right before the first WTC bombing. Her comments were: "..how could you join those people!..."
Try as I might, she never really accepted my choice, she just became less vocal about it. The rest of the family were not any less vocal, as a matter of fact, my Dad never said a word about it. My siblings just turned their backs- for a while. After so many years, no one mentions it- and that's been since 1992 when I "reverted".
Some family and friends will be dismayed because of all the negative media Islam has received over the years- and the thing you may hear most is not about the wars, or bombings, etc, it will be about us "oppressed" women! You just will need to keep reading and make yourself knowledgeable so you may logically rebut their comments with facts.
Again good luck with your reading- may it bring you closer to Allah (SWT).
